My father had polio in 1931, at 2 y/o. He did get Post Polio Syndrome. His symptoms were quite similar to mine.

being a neonatal nurse i hole heartedly agree with getting children and babies vaccinated.

i too have a friend who had polio as a child and now has post polio syndrome and she's in a WC.

i'm lucky i guess. i get flu shots every yr and have had the shingles vaccine and done fine. i know others have trouble with shots.

i'm going to ask my pcp about vaccine boosters now that we're talking about this.

Im on the fence with all these vaccinations now. When my kids were little, they got all their shots. The one I wasnt sure about was the hepatitis shots. They threatend to kick my kids out of school if I didnt take them for this shot. I did, but wasnt in agreement with it.

Now my kids have kids of their own, and my one daughter and her husband are all for immunizations, except for the chicken pox vaccine. I agree with their decision. I worked in hospitals for 20yrs, alot of that time in pediatrics. I saw 2 cases of chicken pox in that whole time be admitted to the hospital. I had the pox, all 3 of my kids had the pox (at the same time) and so on, and we are all fine. I do believe going thru some of these will help with your immunity to it.

Whooping cough, definately not! Some things you just dont mess with. The only one I debate is the pox shot. I now understand why they want the hep shots for kids.

My arm never got really sore. The only time it hurt was when I leaned on it. I slept on that arm last night with no problems.

Aside from unusual weakness (which I believe is prompted by recent emotional turmoil) the vaccination doesn't appear to be affecting me.

Those of you who have been adversely affected by a vaccination - was it a delayed reaction or soon after the shot?

Most of the serious consequences are delayed.

The immediate reaction is typical, for many people. This is a reaction to the adjuvant added which induces inflammation.

It takes a while for the adjuvant to rev up the immune system for later attacks. This can be weeks or months.

We also had a fellow from Canada who had 2 H1N1 vaccines by accident. The doctor was supposed to give him one of H1N1 and one regular flu shot. He was quite ill and ended up on steroids.
We haven't seen him lately.

The only immediate stuff I get is a sore arm, swollen, or a lil temp. then a day or two goes by and I feel better. Then a week or two goes by and WHAMMO! relapse! Happened with my Hep B shot and again with my tetnus. WHAMMO!

My arm has been feeling ok; slightly warm still and a little bruised-feeling at the injection site. Till tonight when one of Beckyr's little girls, who was sitting in my lap, jerked her head back. Hit the exact wrong spot! It throbbed and 2 hours later it's still sore. Not-like-a-bruise sore. I'll be sleeping on my right side tonight!

Still doesn't seem to be affecting my MS symptoms.

Can you put ice on it? Not sure if that would help or not. I know how badly that can hurt, though, when you bump that particular spot. I hope you feel better.

I think using a topical 1% HC cream might help with the local
reaction. It won't penetrate past the skin much to affect the vaccine.

My old allergist used to give out samples of steroid creams for
reactions to the allergy shots he gave every one. I used to get large welts from them.

You could also try some Benadryl cream, but I don't think it is strong enough.

I get all suggested vaccines. My half sister had polio as a child and lost the use of her legs. She was in an iron lung when my mom married my dad, and nursed her back to health. She was never able to walk without crutches. She has post polio syndrome now. The risk of reactions is small compared to what these diseases can do to you. I also get a flu shot each year.
