I am soooo glad I made this post !!!!
I was a little embarrassed to admit what I had done - even though I laugh about this stuff, I also get worried (the whole job issue) and I sometimes get a little depressed about it. I try very, very hard to laugh about these things though because -- it is, what it is.... This is life and in reality - there could be MUCH WORSE things to deal with. Most of your posts were really funny and they all made me feel better just knowing I'm not alone and you all understand !!! ![]() Thank you !!!

I've done a lot of things like hear or read the wrong thing. My husband could say something to me and I could literraly think he said Princess Di made brownies. It was that crazy. But the most profound thinf was what made me think I was having problems that might make me have to quit work.
I was am RN on a cardiac unit. Our main thing was have a patient come in with angina, send them for a cardiac catheterization and then treat as needed. Teaching was my favorite thing, whether it was nurses aide, nursing student, patient or family. I remember this patient coming back from his cath and he needed open heart surgery. The family was asking the names of our surgeons and I couldn't remember a single one of them. I had been an RN there for almost 30 years, had worked with the cardiologists and surgeons most of those years. Then I started forgetting names of the cardiac drugs the patients were taking. I would give the little cup of pills to the patients and he would ask me the names of his pills and I would give him this blank look. That's supposed to make my patients trust my teaching? But 'luckily' for me I had a big exacerbation right after all this happened and I never went back to work. So I never had to make that gut wrenching desicion of having to quit work. |

![]() This was the very reason I gave up work as an RN in Critical Care Nursing, in September of last year. I started to forget things so very similar! I retired immediately (somewhat early I might add) when I noticed the same type of thing happening to me, because I was scared stiff that I might forget something really important like drug calculations or similar, and my forgetfulness might eventually cause a patient to suffer complications or even death. When you're an RN anywhere, but especially in Critical Care, A&E, Cardiac Units and Pediatrics, we as nurses have a responsibility to others to determine when it's in their best interests (the patients I mean) for us to call it a day as far as our own practice goes. That's what I did, and of course I miss it, but at least I know I won't kill or injure anyone now.

Interesting about the nursing comments...
Way back, when I went to school - Nursing was my number 1 choice and I took the preliminary course - a year of Anatomy/Physiology, Microbiology and all the the general stuff - psych courses and sociology and such. When it came down to going into the full time curriculum however, I could not manage the schedule (or would not) because I had 2 young children and needed more flexibility in my time. Consequently, I went with my second choice - Computer Science. I have always known Nursing was where I belonged, but, if I had gone into Nursing - I would have had to stop working many, many years ago because of the very things that you all mentioned. As bad of a mistake as taking down an entire training session full of users was, nobody's life was at risk (except mine - LOL). I "try" to keep things in perspective and also - whereas I can try to laugh about some of the ridiculous mistakes I have made (it's laugh or cry) but in medicine - any mistake - is NO laughing matter !!! So I remind myself that I am thankful that I can hang onto my job for now and I will just have to keep working on the memory issues.

I all the time is doing sumtin stupid.
The latest thing is,I was looking for my sons backpack all over the house (ok alittle normal),then I remebered that I was still in the car (Agian normal),so I got bundled up,and went out in the cold, when i got there MY CAR WAS GONE!!(ok freaked by now.) So I walked back in the house and picked up the phone, and dialed my DH work. When I remebered that he has our only car at work!!(ok,It was so funny afterwards).I had to make something up as for why I was calling him at work. Geeze, that was horrible.. |

I can't even remember all the goofy things I've done in moments of forgetfulness, but the newest and most frightening thing now is thinking my memory is right.
Recenlty my boss asked me for a file Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Blowhard. I could distinctly remember he asked for it a week prior. I remember because it was a file I needed help finding (which isn't unusual in our office, files are often with another attorney). I told my boss it should be in his offices as I had already pulled it. He said no, he hadn't even asked for it until that day. Really? I swore I pulled the file. I went looking and sure enough the file wasn't even in the office, but had to be brought from off site storage. Now that's scarey! I can't even trust what appear to be "good" memories. And this is only one instance among several similare deja vu-type memories. Of course there's the time I asked my husband a question, and between the time I asked it and he answered, I'd completely forgotten I even asked anything and had no idea what he was talking about. This has happened several more times since the first, which was before my dx.

Oh my what a thing to have happened.
Yes I remember those days, I used to forget everything. I told my supervisor that I have cognitive problems and to please be patient with me as I do forget what is told me. I explained that my short term memory was not very good. She had the friggin nerve to look me straight in the eye and say " I see nothing wrong with your memory ". I was so mad I could not beleive it. Who was this woman a doctor? No just some pencil pusher that kissed butts to get where she was. I left the company that afternoon, went to the doctor, told him, he told me to get the "H" out of there before they fire me. He got me onto STD and then later I had to fight for LTD. People just do not understand. I hope your superiors understand and help you. In my personal life, I have trouble word finding, forgetting what I was doing, or going to do, peoples names and lots more but I can't remember ![]() Typos are big with me, and my english was exceptional. Now? I spell and speak like a kid. Hugs to you. ![]() All the best.
