I had an LP performed as part of my MS diagnosis. It was a positive test with obands present.
I also tested positive on MRI, evoked potentials, and blood work ruled out all else. I also had several neurological episodes over a period of time to choose from for the diagnosis. My question is, since I already tested positive on all tests for MS, would another LP be required at any point? What may cause a second LP to be requested? Or would they simply skip this test, since it was a clear diagnosis otherwise? (I could see going for a second opinion that an LP may be required, but assuming I'm with the same neurologist). I'm just curious. ![]()

Laura, I see no reason for you to ever have another LP done for your MS. You should get copies of all your tests from your neuro so incase you change neuros or want a second opinion you have previous test results to show the new doctor.
I have had one LP done which came up positive with o-bands. I have never had a doctor even mention doing another LP and I will NEVER have another one done. Once was enough for me ![]() |

Actually, there was no real need for the first, since they don't need to do one unless they can not find what they are looking for in a MRI. In your case, you had enough evidence already.
![]() The only other reason you might need one again in your lifetime, is if they are looking for something else, like meningitis, leukemia, lymphoma, mycobacterial infection, or for doing some treatments like a bone marrow transplant. Cherie

My MS specialist said that a LP was only warranted if I wanted more proof of my diagnosis before starting meds. Nope, being nearly blind and having "multiple" lesions on my brain were proof enough for me to start Copaxone.

Thanks folks
![]() It is odd that my neuro did proceed with the LP in light of all I know now versus then. But as I say, he's Dr. Thorough. ![]()
