Default vision and glasses question

My MG is mostly ocular and often just ptosis. I have double vision on occasion and I also have trouble focusing, especially in dim lighting. I wear glasses and my prescription and vision quality seems to change depending on when I last took mestinon. I asked my neuro doc about this and he said the muscles for focusing eyes aren't affected by MG.

I might just need new glasses and am having strain issues, but maybe not. For those on mestinon with glasses, do you take a pill right before your eye exam, or perhaps not? How can I get the right prescription if my vision is unstable due to MG?

It's kind of a practical question. Not such a big deal but if I get new glasses, I'd like them to do the best job possible with the ups and downs of MG.

Thanks in advance and I wish everyone the best.

Excuse me but WHAT THE FLUFF?!!!! The muscles that "focus" eyes are most definitely affected by MG.

Have you seen a neuro-ophthalmologist? If not, try to find one and go see them. They don't normally do the regular "eye" work for glasses. Or see a good regular ophthalmologist for an eye checkup and then ask them to refer you to an N-O.

No offense to your neurologist but his statement is not remotely scientific. Maybe he feels out of his league when it comes to technical eye issues.

When you get your eyes checked, you should know that the drops they give make MG worse. Atropine is often given, which does the opposite of Mestinon. Between the Atropine and numbing drops, my MG gets worse for a couple of days after an eye check.

Do you have glasses now? Good ophthalmologists can get a correct prescription for you even if your MG is bad. They have their ways. And, yes, do take Mestinon before an eye appt.

Are you sure you only have ocular MG? Just asking.

I hope you get answers to all of your questions by your doctors. An N-O is a very good doctor to see because they can assess your ocular MG and give you tips. And then maybe the N-O can send a detailed description of what eye muscles are affected by MG and how they cause both double and blurry vision to your neuro. Maybe it'll bring your neuro's care into focus!

I would recommend making your eye dr appt to measure for glasses early in the day before your eyes are too tired.

Something seemed wrong when my neuro said the focusing muscles aren't affected by MG. My focusing muscles seem to be affected. Sometimes I have to shut one eye or do other tricks to see things. My doc seems very good. I may not have asked the question well or perhaps didn't hear the answer well. I'll ask again.

I do wear glasses and probably need a new prescription. My ophthalmologist was the 1st doc to suggest MG and a subsequent blood test confirmed antibodies. This ophthalmologist may be an NO. I'm not sure. I've been seen twice and had my prescription measured with and without mestinon and the results were different. If I'm going to shell out money for a new pair of glasses, I don't want the MG to mess things up. I'll have to discuss with the ophthalmologist and make sure they know how to measure someone with MG with good results.

My MG seems to be almost 100% ocular. I had EMG and SFEMG testing done and they said they had trouble measuring any MG effects in muscles other than my face. I feel other symptoms that could be generalized MG but I can't tell for sure if they're from MG, or worry, or lack of exercise, or something else. This is a sneaky disease. I keep telling myself, if its hard for me to discern, the symptoms aren't so bad and I should feel good about that. Anyway, my easy to discern symptoms are ocular and I hope that doesn't change. I've been lucky so far but I was only diagnosed a few months ago and the disease unfolds in its own way in its own time.

Thanks for the comments. I'm praying for the best for everyone.

My glasses work great early in the day. By late at night, I have to give up. There is no way that I can focus to read.
