Default New guy here- CoQ10 question

Hi all- new guy here

I've had essential tremors most of my adult life (I turn 50 next month). For years, I've looked for a solution to this with no avail. Different doctors have told me different things, but again, none of their advice seemed to work. My current doctor seems to think they can be treated with beta blockers, but the side effects are not really worth it (extreme fatigue according to him). I've finally found the right combination of antidepressants that work best for me (I've been pretty depressed most of my life) and I don't want to change any of that now, nor do I want to add any more pharmaceuticals to the mix at this time. I've recently been reading about CoQ10. How effective is it? My current doctor does not really endorse supplements ("you'd do just as well to eat a handful of M&M's"). I will try whatever it takes to at least lessen the tremors. I'd like to hear from people with first hand experience with CoQ10- or any other supplements for that matter.

Welcome to NeuroTalk:

I looked on PubMed for you and could not find any papers on
CoQ-10 studies.

I did find this link however:
http://suite101.com/article/natural-...tremor-a387994

This link suggests, l-theanine. Dr. Blaylock MD also suggests it for other neurological conditions, like peripheral neuropathy.
This is a good brand (which I use also but not for tremor):
http://hsionline.com/2006/07/20/essential-tremor-2/

Low doses of beta blocker may help--often they don't cause as much side effects as higher ones.

Also some people have temporary success with Benadryl.
This is over the counter, but also alittle sedating. People with glaucoma or men with prostate issues cannot take it. It tends to lose effectiveness with time in some people.

Some people who are intolerant of gluten in the diet, have ataxia or other problems with the cerebellum. Going gluten free for 3 or so months may help if you are one of them.

Default Hi alphacat

I flat out didn't believe suppliments would work for me. I have PN. After one year there is noticable improvement all the way around. It is worth a try, and it is better than another script. I go to a physiatrist. ginnie

Welcome from a fellow newbie/longtime lurker. If you're concerned about Parkinson's (not sure if you are), then there was a CoQ10 trial that was halted recently because they didn't like the outcome. In reality trials get halted for numerous reasons besides the treatment didn't work, but this is a therapy that my partner and I aren't pursuing right now.

That said, I have read that CoQ10 is an important component of the neurological system and we don't absorb it as well as we get older. I take it as a general anti-aging supplement. It's expensive, so you have to balance these facts. I take the ubiquinol form which is of course more expensive but also more readily absorbed than the basic version.

Hope that helps!
