Smile Post for Melinda Page

i to all out there and especially my new buddies who like me have FIBROMYALGIA. I am pretty up on the symptoms of Fibromyalgia but CONFUSED about one area on which I cannot find any info and Drs can't seem to help either. I have recently had a hysterectomy due to uterine prolapse and have now been told I have bladder prolapse. Though the most common causes of these are having kids, being overweight and aging, I am only 42, have no kids and weigh 47 kgs!! Please help - before I have this next op to repair my bladder prolapse I would really like to know if anyone with Fibromyalgia has had a similar experience with this being part of the fibromyalgia. I do not want to keep having operations if it is part of the Fibro and likely to reoccur. It seems to me that it could be part of the Fibro as my body's muscles take the strain in such weird and wonderful ways. Is it possible that strain to the lower back and tummy muscles that someone without fibro would not normally feel is overstraining me and causing prolapses. As anyone with fibro knows lifting the simplest (lightest!) thing can cause BIG muscle strain. Any experiences out there for me? I'm kinda getting desperate for answers as my surgery is booked for 5 weeks time. My biggest worry WAS the form of the surgery (I am trying to convince the Dr to operate through the tummy and not vaginally due to Vulvoldynia and other nerve pain probably caused by the vaginal hysterectomy) but now I am even worried wether I should have the op at all - if it will just reoccur because it can be part of the Fibro. I'm wondering if severe tummy muscle spasms can even be pushing down on the bladder and mimicking "prolapse" as I get all the symptoms with shopping, lifting the garage door etc, but then with rest and time the symptoms can ease off - just like the muscles in the rest of my body due to the Fibro. Please help with any info.
PS - If I don't have this op in 5 weeks I can go back onto the waiting list for up to 1 year. Ouch !!

Hi Melinda and a big WELCOME to NT. I can relate to you. I have FM. I sure don't want to give you advice as to whether you should have the OP or not, but I can tell you that I have probs w/a leaky bladder also.

I have to cross my legs when I cough or sneeze. I am always running to the bathroom, as the smallest amt in my bladder causes me to have an urge to go. Lifting causes pain in my muscles and yes, also gives me the urge to go. BUT, I have not had a hysterectomy, so I can't comment on whether that has added to the problem w/you or not. What does your Gyno say?

I see a Rheumatologist regularly and he has helped me immensely. I believe my prob is partly due to my FM, but I can't say for sure. Can you seek another opinion? I feel for you, but just can't tell you what I think you should do. This is a major decision on your part, so seek more opinions. Surgery is something you need to take seriously and feel like it is the 100% right thing to do B4 you have it....

take care and Yes, I can totally understand the FM pain. It is miserable. I live w/it every day... take care and keep us posted.

Welcome again!

Hi Melinda and welcome to NeuroTalk. I have fibromyalgia as well and the same bladder problems as described, but I have no clue if there is link.

You might also want to check out the Hyster Sisters site. I noticed there that a lot of the women have fibromyalgia as well. NOT that I would want to see you go elsewhere because we have fibro people here as well. Here is a link to Hyster Sisters. http://www.hystersisters.com/

Again welcome to NT. I'm glad you joined us.

Thanks for talking to me and for the site link. I tried to get on to them but they don't accept YAHOO adresses. I am going to keep researching though! I'll be in touch again - I don't have e-mail at home so I'm at the library, it's cold and I'm stiffening up!!

Luv from Sydney, Mel

Hi again to Doody - Quick question - when u say "Same bladder problems" did you mean that you have prolapse too?

Still cold, heading home.

Hi Daisymay, Thank you - from all that I have read I'd say your bladder problems are definitely part of the FM - it's called "Irritable Bladder" which is part of FM as "Irritable Bowel" can be. I don't have those symptoms though - I only have PROLAPSE (first the uterus, now the bladder) where everything drops and it feels as if you have something really uncomfy inside - like an egg - and I feel I need to cross my legs and squeeze to keep it in!! No amount of Pelvic Floor exercises help!! The Gyno wants to operate but cannot tell me if it is part of FM, my Neurologist cannot tell me either. I'm going to keep researching..... They got my uterus last year, not keen to donate much more to science just yet.

Luv from Sydney, Mel

hi Melinda - I agree wondering what your GYN says and that 'always get second opinions for surgery'. I'm not a doctor, but a holistic health practitioner and see many patients with FM and many bladder issues. Holistically speaking, the urinary/bladder meridian is involved whenever there are these type os symptoms....FM or not! An acupuncturist or one who is trained in meridian therapy could address this for you. Do some homework - symptoms are a manifestation of blocked chi (energy) through the meridians that nourish the organs. Certainly beats surgery to try some alternative approaches. If you can find an advanced massage therapist, trained in helping FM, another good route to take. blessings! Linda in CA

Thank you linda, I agree with the energy (nerve) block thing - I am back to the Neurologist after an MRI this week and checking that that there is nothing putting pressure there B4 I make any decision re an op. I am still looking into whether PROLAPSE is a part of Fibro as well. I know that Bladder weaknesses are (urgency, incontinence etc) but I don't have these symtoms - I just feel like I am carrying around an egg where there shouldn't be one!! Know what I mean !!??
