Hi My name is Missy Masinter my mother had brain surgery on Monday March 22,2009. She had an unruptured anyeurism that was clipped. She was released on Thursday from the hospital to come home and recover. My sister and I are taking care of her and looking for reassurance on what to expect during her recovery process. So far I think all is going well. She has only been home for 2 full days and I think she may be trying to over do things a little. The first day home she slept alot. The following day her speech was great but then the vistors started rolling in. She really wants to talk alot. Today I don't think she rested enough and tonight she seemed to be having problems getting her words out right and gathering her thoughts. It was a little alarming but the doctor did say to this was normal after this surgery. I guess we just wanted to know as care takers what we should expect and would welcome any advice on our part on how to take excellent care of her. I have researched on line foods that help heal the brain and have been trying to get all the proper nutrition in her. She so far has had none of the serious complications they said to look out for. Reading everyone's stories is very inspiring. But we are both very nervous, looking for advice and reassurance.

You and your sister have a special job to do for your mom. I'm glad you found our forum. You'll find lots of support from people who have been caregivers for their loved ones. It's a labor of love.

Hi Missy! My mom just had brain surgery last year and is still recovering. She had a non-cancerous brain tumor. Her speech was off for some time but she has healed from that pretty good. She had headaches more than anything and her balance was off. Still is on bad days. Her memory is OK. The main thing for my mom is for her to stay rested. If my mom is tired she gets frustrated and messes up some things. She also had seizures which are controlled by meds. We're not sure if she had them from the tumor or the surgery. Overall, she is healing. The neuro said it could take more than a year to fully recover from brain surgery. Even with a she has endured, she is living on her own if that helps you get an idea.

If you feel inside that something more is going on than your normal after surgery side effects don't feel bad calling the doctor. That's why they are there. Welcome and feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks so much for your support. I love taking care of her and wouldn't have it any other way. I will have to leave on Sat. to return to my home in Florida. Her sister who is an LPN is coming on Thurs. to take my place for next week. Then my sister has a week off and is picking up the third week.

Welcome Missy...you and your sister a the greatest just to take on the part of caregiver to your Mom. I don't any experience with pain injury or surgery but you have been given some good stuff by those before me.

Rest is important in healing anything. Maybe you could limit her visitors a little...I know she probably enjoys the company and so do you however she needs to rest...you guys take care of you to...this is coming from one caregiver to another...
