Based on doing alot of reading on this site, and some feedback from some of you, I've started taking a few of the recommended supplements.
D3 - 3000 IU daily. Methyl B-12 - 1,000 mcg lozenge daily. Taking this because my B12 test came in at 350. Magnesium Chloride - 520mg twice daily Alpha Lipoic Acid - 100 mg twice daily - Have had an elevated glucose test. Thought this one would be good as it converts glucose to energy and is an antioxident. My question is, can I take TOO much of any of this? How do you know if you are taking enough? How often should I call my Dr. and asked to be tested for B12 and D levels? Should I be consulting with my neurologist first, or regular MD to make sure its safe to take with Neurontin and Lisinopril (blood pressure)? Sorry for all the questions, but there is so much information here, it is a bit overwhelming! ![]() |

What magnesium chloride product are you deciding to use? At this dose? Starting patients are recommended at 1/2 the RDA elemental. So I need to know which product you intend to use.
Alpha lipoic needs at least 600mg a day to be effective... the newer version r-lipoic will work at 100mg a day. Retest Vit D3 and B12 in 3 months for best results. And take the B12 on an empty stomach for best absorption. Lisinopril does deplete zinc on a daily basis. So adding some zinc in the form of OptiZinc once a day might be a good idea. Quote:

I bought The ALTA product through iherb.com. Is there a particular product you'd recommend? I've seen SlowMag show up quite a bit in this forum, is that better?

Okay, I see it now. It is 62mg per tablet elemental.
RDAs are given in elemental values so that is what I recommend using to figure doses. The beginning goal for new use of magnesium is up to 50% of the RDA, assuming you do eat some in your diet. Start at 2 a day spaced out, and see if you notice improvements. This link explains elemental and shows graphs. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/magnesium.asp Vit D improves magnesium absorption, so those will go well together.

Thanks mrsD. You are a wealth of information, and from what I can see in all the threads I've read, a great help to folks, like me, who have suddenly been slapped in the face and confronting a very difficult situation.

Thanks for the advice. Does it skew the results? How many days?

I'd do 5-7 days. This will let any oral just taken not show up.
B12 injected will show a huge effect, but oral is less absorbed. B12 stays in the serum for about 72 hrs when injected. Injected is 1000mcg all at once. This is why taking oral I think is better, because the injection just doesn't last long. Many doctors are switching to oral recommendations, but it is a slow process for them to do a "new thing". Your target is 1000 or better on the test if you are supplementing. The test only reads to 2000, and some posters here keep their levels at that reading.

Please remember, it took a while to get to where you are now.
It will take some time to crawl out of it. We can heal, but it takes time to do so.
