Keep in mind that supplements often take a while to help repair the damage that has been done to your nerves. You said you took metanx but it did nothing for you. There isnt a quick fix for nerves. Except for toxins and physical trauma, they take a while to reach the level of damage that is measurable. They grow very slowly and repair can be spotty. You may take b12 for a year before you notice a difference. Learn what you need to provide a healthy environment for your nerves to regenerate. Strict control of sugar levels, diet, supplements and exercize (what you can do when you are able).

Thank you everyone for all of your insights! The doctor was wonderful, and actually understood my pain. She was informative, and gave me a lot of support for the pain I was feeling, even though I am at a young age. She suggested some Physical Therapy (which my other neurologist NEVER mentioned) and we are trying a medicine called Tegretol. I am going to look up some information on that medication, so I really hope that works. We are redoing an EMG in two weeks, and I am going to meet up with her then as well to discuss the results. I am going to try the B12 suppliment and see if that helps at all. Thank you everyone for all the wonderful information. It's been a huge help!!

I haven't heard of PT for PN (yet) either. I'm curious what kinds of exercises or machines, etc. they'll have you doing. Please keep us updated on this. Thanks.

Some docs still have the 'walk it off' theory of treament for any type of pain.
Its a shame thy are so on the dark ages on proper PN treatments

Some PT and rehabs do anodyne therapy, and this has been helpful for diabetic neuropathy.

If you choose to use the Metanx.... you must take it on an empty stomach, because of the B12 content. Food impairs absorption of B12.

You should see some improvement in about a month or so...and with time that may grow. But the other supplements work differently on diabetic neuropathy.

Type I diabetes is thought to be mostly autoimmune in nature, and Vit D levels help with that.

http://diabetes.webmd.com/news/20100...abetes-control

This link explains how Vit D reduces pain from diabetic neuropathy.
http://www.lef.org/newsletter/2008/0...neuropathy.htm

So get that D tested to find out where you are and use only a D3 supplement to raise yourself to more normal levels:

This thread has a medical video explaining Vit D:

Hi, my neuropathy was caused through Prediabetes & low B12, your symptoms sound very similar to what mine were a few years back.
Walking used to aggravate the hell out my symptoms, walking on pathments was a real killer but I needed to lose weight so i opted to go to our local all weather pool [early in the mornings when it was quite there] and just walk up and down the lanes, doesn't hurt your feet at all, but it really does help when your trying to loose weight and get fitter.

As already mentioned nerves heal very slowly and can only do so in the right enviroment, so keeping your sugars as close as possible to non diabetic levels is crucial, also watch out for the lows as well because they damage nerves as well.

I found some relief out of R- lipoic acid 100 mg daily, i did start off with alpha lipoic`acid but it gave me a rash [ rare side affect ] but no problem with the R- Lipoic, it combined with gamma linolenic acid [480 mg daily], this is found in evening primrose oil, it took some time to feel the benefit but definatly helped.

good luck
Brian
