Question What's better, subligual b12 lozenges or the regular sublinguals

Still doing research on b12 and I'm stuck between lozenges or non lozenges. Also, what types of brands are good (nature made, spring vally, etc.......). Are the timed released ones any good?????

Do not get timed release. It doesn't work with B12.

The studies with B12 were done orally, swallowed. Sublingual is not really that great, as the B12 molecule is huge and large molecules are not absorbed quickly thru the mouth membranes.
They historically were made because back then B12 was not understood well.

Without intrinsic factor (which is released in the stomach in response to acid) passive absorption is done in the intestine.
Studies show absorption there without intrinsic factor are enough to provide up to 5X RDA (which is 2-4 micrograms).

this article gives the laboratory results from oral swallow:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...able/T1/#TF1-4

There is only a small window of opportunity in the small intestine so timed release is not a valid option.
There is a pricey new product out, with a carrier molecule, but it is not methylB12....and you should really use the methyl form in case you have the genetic failure to methylate B12 in the body.

This is the B12 thread, and I know it is long, but you really need
to read it.

Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be. 1000mcg (1mg) of methyl B12 daily is about .10cents a day.

We are lucky today, that the research has been done finally, and a simple inexpensive solution is available to all of us OTC. Make sure you choose methylcobalamin, the activated form.

I use Puritan's form, and tested it out on myself. It gave very high blood levels chewed up and swallowed. Their big sale ends Sept 26... buy one get 2 free (30 ct bottle)
This is the link to the 1000mcg:

MethylB12 is now at most online discount vendors, including Swanson's, and iherb.com They typically have more than one company that they sell, esp iherb. It is less commonly found in local stores, but that is also changing now.

When I was doing my own research into B12 the top 2 tested brands are Jarrow and Enzymatic Therapy. I do have a site that I got my info from, it's on another forum that has all the test results, but I don't want to be rude and post it here if that is not cool, but I found it to be intensive studies so I went and bought both brands.

They are both sublingual and my personal experience has been great, but I use both name brands everyday so i couldn't say which is better or not. I figured if I bought the top 2 tested then I was covered, lol.

Edit to say I take 5mg which is 5,000 mcg daily, which is the amount my research showed worked.

I am not discounting anything MrsD said, simply stating my own belief/research and what I do and believe in personally.

2003 study:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1884303/
Quote:
In summary, a dose of 500 µg of cobalamin given either sublingually or orally, is apparently effective in correcting cobalamin deficiency in subjects with early-stage disease.
Since one swallows the saliva that the B12 dissolves into, if you decide to do sublingual, you should do so on an empty stomach.

I am not the only person, who believes that sublingual B12 is not efficient:
http://dongoldberg.com/2010/10/11/vi...blingual-form/

However, you can choose what type and how much to use yourself, in the final analysis.

Definately on an empty stomach. I guess with the theory it's all going the same place, then it doesn't hurt to do it sublingually, and you are covered on both ends, lol.

Thanks Stacy, I bought some Methyl b12 today from the vitamin store. I upped my dose to 3,000 mcg daily to help maintain the tingling in my foot and leg (left leg). Can 5,000 mcg be taken daily?????

I take 5,000 daily. There is no known toxicity to B12.

I take benfotiamine for burning, it has been a miracle for me. The burning is gone as long as I keep taking it, which has helped with the tingle since the burn is gone. Don't know if you have issues with that burning feeling or not.

Thank you Stacy, I really appreciate your response and knowledge. I don't have the burning or numbness, just tingling. I can't wait to see my neurologist to do all the test to find out what's wrong. Good luck to you and thanks again.
