Hi All, Im new to the forum and would like to ask a question.
i'm experiencing a real lose of strength in my legs and arms. i've had all the test. its gone from being able to walk to needing a cane and if i'm standing or walking for more than a couple minutes they throb and ache so bad my legs want to give out. Im seeing one neuro and now he is sending me to another one. technical summary: the nerve conduction studies of the right extremities show prolonged median motor and sensory distal latencies. Sural sensory responses are absent bilaterally. On needle examination, decreased recruitment and increased motor unit durations are noticed in the vastus lateralis, mediai gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscles bilaterally. Repetitive nerve stimulation of the median and ulnar nerves bilaterally are within normal limits. Impression: 1. chronic axonal peripheral neuropathy without active denervation. 2. right carpal tunnel syndrome. 3. No EMG evidence for myasthenia. |

Welcome to NeuroTalk:
I can't comment on the tests, we'll have to wait for Glenn to show up. But I wonder if you are taking a statin? Here is a explanation of the CK test: http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encycl...e_kinase_blood

Any family history? Muscle loss could be a sign of hereditary neuropathy - Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT). Statins can really ramp it up, as I found out.
If it shows up on an EMG NCS, you have weakness progressing, and absent reflexes, those are all markers. Do you have high arches? Hammertoes? Clumsiness or lack of coordination in childhood or youth? |

Thank you for reading. As far as I know nothing in my family history. Im 58 and have 5 siblings, nothing in any aunts and uncles or grandparents. If I look back, this has been going on for a fews years, but I just brushed it off as having partial knee replacement on both knees, and not getting enough exercise. I went on social security disability in 2009 for heart problems. It became very evident in August that something was really wrong, because I couldn't even get thought a grocery shopping trip without near collapse. Its just getting worse and worse. I have fallen down my stairs at my apt. and dont go out now unless I have a DR. appt. or a test. My next DR. appt. is dec.4 with another neuro. no pain unless im standing or walking, ive had numb toes for a few years, but no tingling. I do have small muscle twitching all over. Both my rotator cuffs have tears, MRI in 2009, but never fixed. After my fall I either tore it more or something. It hurts all the time. Oh, and I live alone. This is getting real hard mentally. And I dont know what this next DR. will do.

That sounds really rough, especially being on your own. I no longer feel safe going out by myself to the stores, as I sometimes feel like I am going to fall right under the shopping cart.
You have an awful lot going on. I would still research CMT as it can show up spontaneously even without family history. It does make the knees and hips more unstable, sometimes necessitating surgery, and I am having a lot of trouble with my shoulders and elbows, pinched nerves, limited range of motion, etc. I also get the muscle twitches. Of course other things can cause these symptoms too. I hope a treatable cause is found for you. |

There are muscle inflammations that raise CK values. Your doctor needs to evaluate this situation.
If you had been on a statin for a while, you need to start CoQ-10 ASAP... as statins remove your ability to make your own. Qunol or Q-gel are examples of water soluble CoQ-10 and are preferred over the old oil gel caps. 100mg will do daily, but if you use the old type, then 300mg minimum is needed daily. Statins raise CK values. We have a statin thread going now, and it is very sobering. The statins really damage people. And those with certain genetic markers get damaged faster. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread197080.html Another way you can get damaged... tendons mostly is from fluoroquinolone antibiotics... Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox. These damage DNA and the damage continues after you have stopped treatment with these. It can go on for months and months.

Hello, and welcome to Neuro talk. I have just a suggestion or two for your next Neuro Visit. Give him personally all your records. Lately I find that with the PC's things get mixed up at times, parts of records don't show up Etc. I am sorry you are going through this weakness and symptoms you have. I hope this next doctor is going to help you. If you can bring someone with you to the appointment,( even a friends, if there is no family nearby) doctors have a tendency to listen and pay attention to the patient better when there is some one else in the room. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. ginnie
