A question for the Neurotalk gurus...
Over three years I've struggled (like so many of us) with both the severity and spread of my neuropathy, now to include the pundendal region. Yikes. The doctors are confounded by the extent of my body-wide presentation and truly just are unable to comprehend the severity of the pain. You have to actually walk in those shoes to understand. I am, however, truly amazed at how much research I've had to do to lend personal understanding to what has happened to me. It's confounding TO ME that mere lay people have to present to their doctors the possiblity of X, Y or Z and then lead the doctors down the diagnostic trial. At least that's been my experience. Anyway, the pain management doctor recently suggested that perhaps I have developed a central sensitization. It was a passing reference and he didn't offer any further explanation. I've come home and done my best to reserach what is, to me, a very complex syndrome. Drawing from your combined knowledge, is it possible that prolonged nerve pain can trigger a central sensitization pain syndrome? Thanks for any responses ahead of time! |

I am not sure the doctors really have a handle on what is and is not a centralized pain case. It seems as if they will apply the label when the severity and locality of the pain moves beyond what they expect or are comfortable with. I have been trying to figure this out myself.
From what I have read in Practical Pain Management peripheral neuropathy can most definitely migrate to centralized pain. |
