Default Shrinks??

Curious? I often read of those who have been to see their "shrinks". Many seem like this is ongoing indefinitely.

Is this more like someone who is there to listen to your problems and thereby a feeling of getting things bothering you out of your system? Or, in many cases, are they helpful in giving advice on how to deal with issues?
