Default MSG/ Monosodium Glutamate ?

MrsD,

I know you've mentioned this before, and I searched on "MSG," but I can't seem to get the search function to return results for me.

I've never had a problem before, but I just went out to dinner with a friend for Chinese, and I'm really flaring. I was having a pretty good day until now.

Do you have a thread or discussion dedicated to this?

Thanks!

Try - monosodium glutamate -
I think the keyword for search needs to be longer than 4 letters but don't quote me on that.

I just used the Forum Search Feature

I'm sorry I can't transfer over the full search results but that won't work.

You can either search in PN forum or all forums...
You can even type in mrsD user name and find her posts on the subject

lots of info there.
I hope you feel better fast. Icky stuff that msg.

Thanks, Lara! The number of letters may be exactly the problem. The search wasn't working for me a few days ago, and then it was, and then it wasn't again. I think first search was on "D3," so that would explain no hits too.

And that thread you provided the link to was exactly the one I remember stumbling upon at some point.

I guess a lot of asian restaurants still use MSG, the ones I frequent here, not often, in So. Cal. do not use it. Bad Stuff.... If they don't have a sign up that they don't use it, ask them NOT to add to your food. I guess in china it's a mainstay!!!

Looks like everyone has been very helpful so far on this topic!
Thanks to all!

There is only one more link I can add:

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/742631
Targeting N-methyl-D-aspartate Receptors for Treatment of Neuropathic Pain
Hong-Yi Zhou; Shao-Rui Chen; Hui-Lin
Expert Rev Clin Pharmacol. 2011;4(3):379-388

This receptor is very complicated....Glutamate is a main neurotransmitter in the brain, and common in the periphery as well. MSG is an inorganic man made compound that floods the body very quickly and can be very disruptive.

Glutamate is in food too, but that is thought to be bound up and slowly separated, and released slowly into the blood, compared to the MSG form.
http://www.fda.gov/Food/IngredientsP.../ucm328728.htm

My son and I both get seriously blurred vision from MSG in foods. Sometimes we'd go to lunch somewhere, and then shopping, and both of us (we are both nearsighted) would get so blurred we couldn't see anymore! Now that I have long term entrenched PN, I notice MSG really flares me.
The Bertoli dinner --Chicken Risotto.... causes burning for me at night. I've checked the ingredients, and cannot find a culprit. sigh It might be a histamine thing though. But we really like this product so we continue to buy it occasionally.

Here is a wiki on NMDA antagonists...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NMDA_receptor_antagonist

Notice Tramadol on that list.
Ketamine, clonidine, are in many compounded pain creams.
magnesium-- that is a common thing for PN here

The aspartic part of the receptor, would react with Nutrasweet, which has aspartic acid in it, and also some supplements combined with it
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supple...ame=aspartates
We don't see the connection to MSG and NMDA with links about aspartates, but I think it would be wise to avoid supplements containing it.

Alot of the reactions are individualistically noted as anecdotal.
It can be very painful, however, if YOU are one of the reactors, so it is best to keep an eye out for MSG or other NMDA agonists.

Thanks for all the helpful links. I have a lot more reading to do as this word "glutamate" keeps popping in a lot of reading I've already done. It came up yesterday as I researching things that can affect tendons.

Based on some things I've read on the web, this Chinese restaurant I went to last night does not use MSG. If that's true, something else got me. How I felt before I ate and how I felt after was like night and day.

The products that the restaurant buys and uses, may have been pretreated with glutamate. So it may be "true" they didn't ADD any, but some may have already been there.

And another possibility is histamine. This is produced by certain organisms on stored food. Fish is a prime example. 2 summers ago my son and I were histamined by frozen perch. It didn't taste old or spoiled, but stored it would still grow some organisms.
By 3 pm both of us had burning feet. He had to take his socks and shoes off. This was new to him, but I just endured mine.
This attack responded to thiamine (which I had up there)... so if this happens again, try the B1...it might help (or not depending).
I suppose it could have been MSG too... a small local eatery in a small local rural setting.

Soy sauces are huge MSG containing products. I never use them, for that reason. If you order a soup of any kind, they usually are high MSG donators also.

People don't realize that bacteria continue to grow even when food is refrigerated or frozen. I am very leery now of ice cream following the long term Listeria contamination at Blue Bell in Tx.
Infecting people since 2013! We had a Listeria event in our state years ago--- a popular meat supplier. It was found that condensation from a pipe above a packing line, was dripping on the food! So I have no frozen ice cream or other treats here now...it is not unreasonable that we have probably been infected at least once. Listeria continues to grow in the freezer on whatever food it is resting upon.

Eating out is very hazardous. One restaurant upNorth, even has a disclaimer on its menu----"not responsible for food borne illnesses!"

That's exactly what I was wondering. I thought I remembered learning at one point that some of the sauces this restaurant uses are pre-made, so all bets are off as to what was in the sauce.
