I'm a Wisconsinite too!

Hi Eskiemom

With respect, the idea of eating "alkaline foods" is a myth though it is popular in the comp/alt med community.

There is well-established physiology (the CO2/HCO3 equilibrium, catalysed by carbonic anhydrase) which keeps body pH within narrow limits (pH 7.4 or so).

Actually parts of this acid-alkaline hypotheses can be found science textbooks too, unfortunately. This propagates lot of confusion in the nutrition community.

Thank you for pointing out that this is a myth! There are definitely no reliable studies that substantiate that what we eat impacts the pH of our blood. There also aren't any solid studies that support the thought that urine pH is a reflection of serum pH; the pH of our urine is an indicator of our kidney function.

Kiwi, what area of biomedical science do you work in?

If by chance you have high oxalates, taking certain types of magnesium will exacerbate oxalates. Magnesium is important to take. I take magnesium citrate and only after meals. There is a calcium ratio that is important with magnesium. I take calcium citrate before I eat. D3 is important for the balance as well and exercise to get everything moving where it needs to go. I have swapped out high oxalate foods slowly with medium and then low oxalate ones for less side effects. Might be worth a look, it was for me.
Wanted to mention that too much antibiotics will damage oxalobacter formigenes, good bacteria in gut that degrades oxalates, so a good probiotic is important to replenish.

How do I get an Organic Acid test? I'vebeen taking Magnesium threonate. I take between 8-10K units of D3 with K each day in the form of drops. And my levels are around 50-55 which is crazy seeing that I take that much plus the D and K I get from my diet. No antibiotics here! And I make a green smoothie every morning with plain Kefir milk which is the best natural probiotic. Add the D3/K drops here.

I am one of the most healthy eaters my entire life. I have never abused my body, been healthy, no RX's, no alcholol or smoking - a real "sqaure". I started us on green smoothies every morning about two years ago and that is when all my problems started.

At times, I feel like my body is completely detoxing, body and soul!

Eskimom, maybe it's environmental? Have you tried changing where you sleep? There could be something in your house doing all this. If something bad happens in a certain place we tend to overblow it. Try changing your bedroom around, better yet, if possible change to a different room.

Interesting you mention this....

Our house is near high electrical lines. But I don't feel better when I'm out of the house. I'm in my home less than 10 hours per day.

I also think my bedroom and bed has bad "juju" from all the fear I've been feeling these past two years.

Who knows - Water, paper mill discharge, cow flatulence, excessive cheese or venison consumption, too many hours in the cold weather at Lambeau Field - the list of possibilities goes on and on ;)

On the serious side though, I do wonder about tick borne illnesses, etc. Who in Wisconsin hasn't been bit by ticks?? My basic lyme tests come up negative - but not always reliable, or so some say.

Interesting...You say that since you started with the green drink that's when you started feeling bad? It's funny, the days I take an extra glass of water or some vitamin pills or that extra piece of protein, the next day I feel bad. Seems like when I think I'm doing something good for myself it turns out badly. We I just eat and drink according to how I feel, I'm better. HHHhhmmm... Maybe it's all in my head or not??? :Ponder:

You can order the test at Great Plains labs and get help on Trying Low Oxalates, yahoo or facebook. They can give you more details. Another is an integrated dr can order for you. They may want to use a different lab and order additional tests though. If it's not a problem with oxalates they are more likely to find a cause for the high acidity. You shouldn't change your diet or supplements before testing.

I'm not sure about the mag you use. It's not on any of the lists I have seen. I am not an expert by any means.

For what it's worth, green smoothies are likely high oxalate content. It's easy to look it up.

I am semi-retired though am still active in science (writing papers, reviewing manuscripts and grant applications as well as doing my best to mentor (ghastly word...) members of my research team.

My PhD was a mixture of protein chemistry, enzymology and mathematical modelling.

I then spent some time as an immunologist but nowadays am mainly interested in protein misfolding (this has implications for conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Diseases), though my interest is from a biomedical science rather than clinical perspective.

Ticks are out of control here. I get deer ticks (a.k.a. Lyme ticks) in my backyard in suburban Madison. My poor dog had the first one of the season dug into his back, earlier this spring. My vet was surprised that the deer ticks had come out that early...

I'm not sure if I am able to post yet but will try. This article explains why foods with high oxalates, in particular green smoothies, may not be good for everyone.
