Default Answer to Brian

Mayo's GI doctor told me that any HOT drink would do it. I use tea and it's the first thing I consume in the morning. It stimulates the vagus nerve. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vagus_nerve The vagus nerve stimulates the peristalsis (as I understand it). Peristalsis is the movement of the bowel that the body does automatically. And then, make time to spend in the bathroom. Make it a regular habit. I find that if anything interrupts this "schedule", it will cause a problem. But I just make time for it as often as is possible. And sometimes later in the day if I've had to miss the morning window of opportunity, I can have an afternoon cup of hot tea and still stimulate things to work.

Since the periodontist told me that I have an infection in my jaw bone around the old dental implants that I have, and that all the Ibuprofen I was taking was weakening my jaw bone, I stopped taking the Ibuprofen, started taking Serrapeptase instead... it helps, but is not as total or quick as Ibuprofen.

And, I started taking 250mg of magnesium 4 to 8 times a day. (I've tapered off now to 3 or 4 times a day.)

Several months later I am sleeping much better, seldom have any cramps, (except for a worrying cramping feeling in my chin...) and have less of a loose teeth problem.

Thanks Billye, i was hoping you would chime in and explain it, just curious though, do you have your tea without the milk ? just thinking it may cool it down, depending on the amount of milk i suppose, some of my friends pour a huge amount of milk in there tea, ruins it i think, but each to their own.
all the best

Default Daniella - everyone is right....

but for you it may take some fine tuning? Trial and error is the rule here as each of us face the issue for a whole slew of reasons that no doc could ever determine or know [nor can we]....
I seem to recall on other neuropathy boards, and also on Cancer boards about a variety of 'recipies' that help... While I have been 'blocked' for extended periods of time [once, very big time with my PN onset - 3-1/2 weeks {no kidding!} and others due to surgeries...the anti-'b's and percocet there] well, I simply drank more water, ate soft stuff and refused to try to worry and strain about it! I will say that walking around in short careful spurts helped as well-guess it got things moving? Also helped my overall circulation-which probably helps as well.

Some of the recipies consisted of prune paste and other flax seed or flax oil to help things along.... Do all the good things to take your mind off the bad...you can amaze yourself when you are distracted. - j

Default Nope, drink it straight!

Got your attention there didn't I? Brian, I drink my tea straight, no milk or cream, a little sugar, but just as hot as I can drink it. With the arrival of the microwave, I've quit boiling water and putting it in a teapot. I simply put a microwave mug in the microwave and heat my tea for 1 min. 55 seconds, then take it out immediately and put the teabag in. Then stir in my teaspoon of sugar and steep the teabag while I put my oatmeal in the microwave. Then I take my teabag out and drink it before I try to eat.

It didn't work at first when I got home from Mayo, but I've found that with time, and concious scheduling time, it works very regularly.

I always suggest people start at one tablet of Slow Mag twice a day in divided doses, since there is active transport in the intestine and you don't want to overload it at one time.
I was just at Costco getting my jinxed blood pressure RX filled and they had generic slow-mag (Mag64) for $4.87 /60....that is 2 dollars less than WalMart where I usually get it.
I use the generic typically to save $$.

If you feel good at 2 a day, then that is all you need. I wouldn't go over 4 a day however. Using high dose magnesium should be monitored by a doctor, esp if you have any decreased kidney functions.
Right, that's for 2 tabs. From what you're saying 2 sounds like plenty enough for me. I had almost immediate results from the first dose. It seems to have stopped the RLS type symptoms I was having.

Unfortunately, there is no Costco anywhere near me. CVS is one place I haven't looked for a cheaper brand of the same ingredients as in the Slow-Mag. Of course, what I've seen with CVS is even their store and off brands are expensive compared to other places. We also have a Rite-aid. I'll check there as well.

Calcium doesn't seem to like me. Every time I try to take any kind of calcium it gives me terrible constipation. Maybe I'll try one dose of the Slow-Mag a day on an empty stomach.

Have you tried sipping hot water ?
When i had my hip replacement done, there was a guy in my ward that had severe constipation, i seen him vomiting and he told me that he had not used his bowels in 4 or 5 days, the hospital had given him all different med's to make his bowel work but nothing had worked, he said they were going to do an enema on him next which he wasn't to pleased about, so i told him about sipping hot water and he said he had never heard of it but was willing try anything, so he had one cup that night, in the morning he still hadn't gone so i said try another which he did, within an hour it worked, he couldn't thank me enough, oh boy, i was sorry i told him, i shot out the room on my crutches and come back when the coast was clear.
oh yeah, the supplement slippery elm helps as well.
good luck
Brian
My mom told me the same thing only a bit differently. She told me to get a glass of warm water, as warm as I could stand to drink comfortably straight down, and to do just that...drink it straight down. It works.
