Marty, Injections are cyano form, and not active in the body. Many people have a genetic error called MTHFR which cannot activate synthetic B12, and some B12 in food to the methyl form.

It would be best if you took 5mg of methylcobalamin a day orally, on an empty stomach, to raise yourself that way. Your levels are low still even with the infrequent injection (which is really not working well for you).

Sleeping is difficult because MethylB12 is a cofactor for your brain to make melatonin from serotonin. So if you don't have it you cannot sleep.

There are many studies out now showing oral works. But you have to take it correctly--- on an empty stomach. I have the links to medical papers on the first page of this thread for you to read.

You can buy methylcobalamin on line just about anywhere now, including Puritan's Pride at a savings. It is also in some local stores now, Walgreens' and Costco carry it now.

The longer you remain below 400pg/ml the more damage you sustain. This is inexpensive to do yourself. Doctors remain clueless about this topic so I have this information here for patients to take control of this therapy themselves.

Hi there.

I was diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy about 7 years ago (perhaps even longer). I have diabetes. I started on the 1000 sublingual Methyl B-12 and in one week I was so much better I went to the 5000 once a day on an empty stomach.

I cannot tell you how this affected me. I have energy, I have NO neuropathy pain. I have feeling in my feet and I wouldn't give this supplement up if you paid me. As a matter of fact last night I was in Dunkin Donuts sitting with several people in their late 70's who were complaining that they have no energy, they don't want to do this and that and they looked at me and said "how the hel* do you have so much energy. I then stood up and bent down and touched my toes (and I have arthritis to boot). They all looked at me and said "HOW???" I then went back to my house (a few doors away), got my little bottle of Methyl B-12, told them I got it at Puritan Pride. None of them have computers but they have children and grandchildren. I wrote everything down for them and when I left, they were all shouting 'GOD BLESS YOU. I laughed my head off. Nice bunch of ladies.

They were ALL goling to go and get some of this via their grandchilden's computer skills.

Will update if they ever start dancing the boogie at Dunkin Donuts. They all know it doesn't take one pill to make a difference, I explained it all to them.

So cool

Melody

Could I just start taking Vitamine B12 orally, in high dosis, without having my levels checked? My spine fluid was checked back in 2007, but I don't know if they checked for that. Can it be checked with a blood test?

Sure it can. Just ask your primary care physician that when he runs your next blood test, to run a B-12 level check. When you get your test results back, it will be right there.

Unless you live in another country, then I have no idea. lol. I just saw your post and figured you live in the USA.

Take care, Melody

Could someone please tell me, what kind of vitamin B12 and how much
of it should I take? This thread is a long one, and I (literally) don't have the nerves to go through it all now, though my question might have been answered there.

Right now, I have 2 kinds of pills on my desk:

1. neurobion , which is 100 mg B1 + 200 mg B6 + 200 mg B12

2. megasorb vitamin B complex, which is a lot of things, including 50 mg vitamin B 12 (as cyanocobalamin, whatever that means), and 400 mg folic acid.

Hard choice, I have no idea which one is better, and how much of it I can safely take.

I could also maybe buy just B12 in a standalone form, they probably do sell it? Would that be better?

Cheers

I don't know what is available where you are.

But if you can find methylcobalamin ...at least 1000mcg size...that would be a good start.
Stop taking it at least 3 days to a week before any testing.
Stand alone products are the only ones with high dose as a rule.
There are rare products now (but don't know if you have it where you are) called Metanx, which are high dose.

Take your B12 on an empty stomach with no food for at least an hour. Otherwise it won't be absorbed well. 50mcg in a mixture is not going to get you very far (if you have problems absorbing for any reason).

Hi again. Forget about anything that says Cyanocobalimin. You want to get Methylcobalimin. I myself have taken 5000 every single morning for about 7 to 8 years now. I buy it off the internet at Puritan's Pride. They give really good deals. Like buying 2 bottles and getting 3 for free. I do not know if they ship to another country. But I do know that Methylcobalimin Or Methyl B12 (as we call it) is the kind of B-12 that you should be putting in your body. It nipped my neuropathy symtoms for good.

If you take cyanocobalimin, your body converts it into Methyl and you won't be getting a great deal. It's a large molecule. That's why I take 5000 every morning, on an empty stomach. It dissolves under my tongue.

I have had no side effects and I sleep quite well. And if you run this by your doctor be prepared to hear "Oh, I don't believe in B-12 therapy, it's a lot of nonsense, etc. etc". Remember, doctors practice medicine, they do not practice nutrition. We get B-12 from meat. We'd have to eat A LOT OF MEAT to get a good amount. I don't eat meat. Even if I did, I would continue to take my Methyl B-12 each and every day. Others will come along and advise you also. All the best

Melody

Melody, when you say "It nipped my neuropathy symtoms for good", what do you mean? I have extended muscle atrophy, the nerves are most probably damaged (just how much, EMG will probably show), any good B-12 could do to regenerate the nerves? Or at least stop that damage from progressing .. I wanna weep when I look at my hands actually
