o.k. to take lots more gabapentin?

I am really depressed.

I currently take 300 mgs gabapentin at night.
I think I can take more. Perhaps I would benefit.

Apparently people with depression and anxiety can take 900 to 2,000 mg a day. I saw that some people can take up to take 4,800 mg/day.

What do you think?

I emailed my pdoc that I need to see her soon and will call her office Monday for an appt.

Mari

I took Gabapentin for pain. But took about 600mg a day. But it
also helped with depression at the time. Because I wasn't depressed
when I took it. I had to start and depression pill after going off.

I had heard up to 2000mg in divided doses.

I am glad that you are calling your pdoc office in the morning.

I used to take 600/600/1200mg a day for neuropathy and paresthesias, but many people with MS take it in higher doses. I'm not aware of any ceiling for it.

Right now I'm taking 700mg off-lable for psych as a mood stabilizer, but I usually lower my dose if my mood is low, and raise it if my mood is too high.

I'm sorry you're so depressed, Mari :hug::hug::hug:
I hope that your pdoc agrees to increase it, and it helps. I think you should be able to adjust to the sedation given enough time

That's good to know. I will ask pdoc when I see her.

In the past an increased dose made me sleepier and it gave me paresthesia (weird feelings in my ears mostly)--
-- I think I might have tried to increase it twice before but I am willing to try increasing it again since I do not seem to have a lot of options.

:)

How is your semester coming along?
Jeff has final juries this week.
When do you see your pdoc again?

I take 800mg. x3/day. I still have pain (neuropathy) I don't understand how anyone is trying to make neurontin a scheduled drug. It doesn't get me high at all. I take Buproprion SR 150mg. x2/day (wellbutrin). It works great for my depression!

OhKay 12-12-2018 10:05 AM

People use gabapentin in conjunction with other meds (mostly opiates) to get high/higher. That is why they are trying to make it a controlled substance.

It never got me high at high doses either.

It's working really well for me as an off-label mood stabilizer.
I'm glad that it's helping you with your depression. That's wonderful :)

Mari 12-13-2018 03:38 AM

OhKay,

Thanks for the Gabapentin news. I love that it is easy for me to get.

(The thoughts about change can be disappointing.)

M

OhKay 12-13-2018 07:26 AM

I have gotten calls from pharmacists at my CVS asking me what dose I'm taking, and why I'm filling 300mg and 400mg scripts, and sometimes 100's. I have had to explain why I'm taking it, and that my dose keeps changing.

Mari 12-14-2018 10:47 PM

Kay,

Oh, Boy!

What a hassle.

Thanks for letting me know. This way if I do get questions I will not freak out.

M

OhKay 12-15-2018 11:49 AM

Yeah, they're not accusatory or anything. They just want to know what's up, and are probably just making sure I'm getting the right meds/dosage.

Some pharmacies will not even bother asking questions.

Mari 12-17-2018 02:30 AM

Thanks for the info, Kay.

Hemp

It's been legal to possess Hemp products as long as they are grown in
another country.
=-=-
Recently Congress voted to make it legal to grow Hemp in the U.S.

=-=-
Some say that the oil from the plant could help people with anxiety.

M

mymorgy 12-17-2018 07:23 AM

I tried it and it is nice but expensive

Mari 12-18-2018 04:59 AM

Maybe as more becomes available, hemp will be less expensive.

Re my parents' Dec visit:

Mom said she had the flu and it is over it now.

But my sis says Mom gets stressed out about travel (They travel all
summer and about a week ago went to an out of
town agriculture conference) . . . .

=-=-=-=-
I told sister to tell them to stay home (not come here).

=-=-=-=-=-
I cannot even really talk to them because they have a new landline phone
that they cannot figure out how to work. And their cell phones
cut out/ turn off about 10 seconds after they pick up the phone.

Re: hemp/CBD

This (long) thread might be worth looking at.

OhKay 12-18-2018 09:30 AM

I saw my pdoc yesterday, and she is going to write a note somewhere on the scripts for both the bottles that says "total dose 700mg." Hopefully I won't get phone calls for now, but I don't know what will happen if I go back down to 600mg, etc.

Mari 12-20-2018 06:42 AM

Kay,

That's should be helpful -- more info on the bottles.

Hi,

The cleaning lady left us --- hubby and I have to do some house cleaning
before Mom and Dad get here Dec 27.

Dad has been telling me (several times now) that he wants to spend time with me exactly the same way he did last time
-- never mind that lots of things could make that impossible like weather, people, roads, changes to parks . . . .

I bought a bunch of opera DVDs in case we are spending time at home.

M

OhKay 12-24-2018 12:12 PM

I hope that things go smoothly with your parents' visit :hug::hug:

Good luck with the cleaning... I hope that there isn't too much of it, and you can take your time getting it done :hug::hug:

OhKay 12-25-2018 11:02 AM

I hope you have a nice day today, Mari :)

Mari 12-26-2018 06:01 AM

Thanks, Kay.

I was awakened by the door-bell Tuesday afternoon.

Hubby dealt with it. Apparently the neighbors' son
(Maybe about nine years old) got his little
drone /mechanical airplane stuck on our roof.
The boy's father got it down with a with a fishing pole.

M

OhKay 12-26-2018 10:56 AM

I guess it was nice of the boy's father to let you know he'd be in your yard...

Dmom3005 12-26-2018 12:44 PM

Honestly very nice. Many don't anymore. I've told my neighbor with
little boys to please use my big yard to play ball with his boys and
to let his little guys play on my swing set. Because we have a really
busy road, and they wouldn't be safe in it. They ride their bikes in
it. But then they are not safe many times that way too. It worries
me just as it did when Ethan lived next door and rode a bike in the street
I had him ride at my house in the dead end street. Or in the street on
the other side of his house.

Donna :hug::grouphug:

OhKay 12-27-2018 10:53 AM

That is so nice of you, Donna :)

We were not allowed to ride our bikes outside of the driveway when we were growing up. When I asked my mother when we could, she said when we grew up, we could ask our husbands lol

Dmom3005 12-27-2018 12:37 PM

Kay

I can totally understand that. In my area, the neighbor has three boys and the
driveway honestly has no room to ride. And the sidewalk does. But its hard to ride on this particular one. Mine doesn't have any driveway, but the road is a dead end, so its safe.

I love children as you know.

Donna :grouphug::hug:

Mari 12-28-2018 06:43 AM

That's funny, Kay.

I grew up in the countryside and Mom pushed us to get out of the
house and be active. She did always insist that we stay together/ watch out for each other.

M

Mari 12-28-2018 07:08 AM

Mom and Dad had weather issues & did not arrive Thurs night

Mom and Dad's airline was hung up with severe weather
throughout their trip.

They had to be re-routed to a city in the opposite direction and so on.

Via phone they said that they would eventually land in one of the
cities near-ish to us and rent a car to drive to their hotel where they had reservations.

=-=
They expected to get into their hotel very late.
They said that they would be at our house today around 9:00 am
in their rental car.

=-=-=-

It's supposed to rain / thunder here today so we have to rethink the parks
where they usually spend their time here (Mom with Hubby and Dad with me)

I had VERY LITTLE SLEEP.

M

OhKay 12-28-2018 10:02 AM

It sounds like you parents had a wonderful start to their visit

I certainly wouldn't expect them at 9am after all that BS and late arrival, nor would I be happy about that. I'm sure you're thrilled since you had no sleep

I hope that you can figure out some things to do together (separately) without too much hassle, and I hope this ends up being a nice visit...
I know that it will be stressful for you at times tho :hug::hug:

Dmom3005 12-28-2018 11:02 AM

Mari

I sure hope your visit with your parents is a good one.

Donna:hug::grouphug:

Mari 12-29-2018 04:09 AM

Yesterday and then again just now I had a hassle logging into here.

I'm frustrated about so many many things.

M

Mari 12-29-2018 04:23 AM

Mom and dad are fine.

Hubby and Mom went walking.
Dad and I sat on the couch in the living room the whole day and talked.

==-=-=
After dinner and before they went back to their hotel using my car,
Dad said that he wants me to fly to their house to help him and his
museum team set up the parameters of a writing and research project
they are starting.:eek::eek::eek:

M

Mari 12-30-2018 10:15 AM

Last night at the dinner table I reminded Mom of something VERY mean she said to me when
Dad was out of the country and I was home from college for spring break.

=-=-
At first she thought it was a joke and laughed.
I said, "I remember. I was there."
Then she was horrified.

Later, after dinner, she apologized.
I told her, "It's a long time ago and I got over it."

=-=-=-

I woke up crying today because apparently I am NOT over it.
She was such a b**** to me during that time and other times.

M

mymorgy 12-30-2018 11:10 AM

I am sorry sorry she was cruel to you and that she obviously so insensitive. I think if we had different backgrounds our bipolar wouldn't be so bad.

OhKay 12-30-2018 02:39 PM

I so wish that your mother’s apology was cathartic :hug::hug:

But I can understand why it was not. In families, it’s usually not just one wound that’s inflicted upon us by one or more people, and sometimes when we think of or talk about one incident, we can be overwhelmed by many (((HUGS)))

It happens to me. I try not to go too far down the rabbit hole, but sometimes it can’t be helped. I try to avoid confronting anyone tho because there are NO apologies in my family.

I hope that you are managing things better, and feeling better, soon. It must be hard with her still visiting :hug::hug:

Love to you today Mari :hug::hug:

Mari 12-30-2018 06:02 PM

My remark to my Mom just kind of "came out." -- We had all been talking
at the same time and laughing.

Maybe, maybe (I don't know) it was good that I said it. I'm still trying
to do "self-soothing" today. Maybe it was something that I really needed
to get out after all those years.

=-=-

I drove them to the crowded AIRPORT today.

I screwed up twice by taking the wrong ramp. (Dad
also screwed up reading the signs for me.)

=-=-
FINALLY, I told Dad that if I could not get them to exact floor/level
for "Departures," I could drop them off at "Arrivals" and they could take the escalators up stars to the correct floor.

That's what they did.

They were way way early for their plane so they felt good about that.

M

OhKay 01-01-2019 12:52 PM

Mari,

I hope that something positive comes out of that conversation with your mother. In the meantime, I'm happy that you are able to self-soothe

The drive to the airport must have been stressful. I don't envy you. I'm glad that things worked out.
