Default Ingrown toenails..

Hi everyone... my name is Pam and I have had RSD since Oct 07. I got it when I fell and hit my shin. It has spread into my right leg so I now have it in both legs, feet and ankles. Anyway, as to my question.. in the last 6 months or so, I am constantly getting ingrown toenails on both of my big toes... has anyone else had this issue??

I get them alot in my RSD foot. Very unpleasant to deal with. My RSD doc said to always cut them straight across. But, when I do that I get ingrown nails even worse.

I Pam and welcome to neurotalk. I'm sorry you have ingrown toenails. I know that is painful. For myself, I have found I've been able to avoid them, by right after shower or bath, I take a metal nail file with a pointed tip and gently lift up my nail away from the skin. Cutting your nails too short is a no no. I actally take a file and file straight across. But if you gently lift up your nail as you clean it, keeps the corner of your nail from growing into the skin. That is the key thing. Hope this helps.
You'll find so much comfort and information here. So many kind and compassionate friends here, always willing to share information to help us all get thru this difficult disorder. Stay in touch and tell us about yourself.
I got RSD following surgery. Wasn't diagnosed for 4 years. Have had it 14 years now and is full body and internally. I am mobile, with the exception of one hand partially paralyzed. I am 61 , hubby 72 one daughter 30 and son in law. They have been wonderful when I have difficult time. I've actually been improving and have lessened my pain meds. Live in Arizona-Wow hot summers. Actually got RSD in Oregon and moved here without knowing I had RSD. Have a wonderful Dr. the past 5 years. He has just built two new clinics with HBOT in each of them. I am going to go thru a HBOT program.
Take care and let us know how your feet are doing. Welcome again, loretta soft hugs

Pam I don't have RSD but I was getting Ingrown toenails. I went to have a Ingrown toenail taken out of my big toe and was suppose to go back so she can pour something on the edges so it would not come back. Sorry I don't know what the method is but maybe someone else will see this and let you know. I did not go back yet even though finding some redness.

She said she was not able to do it when I first came in because the toe was to infected.

Hiya Pam,
And, welcome....

I've had that when I was a very young teen.
It's PAINFUL, I know~!

What you've gotta do, if you can, is let the nail, grow out...
Maybe there's a supplement than can strengthen your nails?
Or, some nail polish that does that?

So, let them grow out, and don't cut them too short.
PROTECT those nails!
Be sure you have room in your socks and shoes.

If this don't work, Please,
DO SEE A PODIATRIST!!!!

Hope you feel well soon,
I know,
what a PAIN
in the
Foot they are!

Hey Pam
i agree with all the above,,,But some people are really sensitive and prone to get them no matter what they do,,I do know that rsd does affect the nails,,exspecially the big toe nails.{ask fmicheal, for a abstract on his take for which i spoke once with him on this matter],,alot of times the nails will grove or get ripples, ridges and turn colors,,,some of this mess is from other conditions and the meds we take,,,,but i believe there is a correlation between rsd and weird nail growth,,mine was fine until a year ago,,with me ,,its both big toes with grooves and slightly light brown, and my r-middle finger and r-thumb,,,,i was fine until rsd,,,or it could be related to other things,,mike told me he was 6 months out when both his big toes nails went haywire[I hope my memerory is correct mike]],,,,,but i do agree,,,,,,,,,,,let them grow,i keep my problem nails quarter of an inch or better grown out,,,,,,,,,,,,,good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,bobber

Hi Pam,

Sorry to hear that you suffer from ingrown toenails a lot too!

I have had LOTS of ingrown toenails since I developed RSD! I never used to get any beforehand but now, I seem to get tons and they always seem to be on my RSD leg - never on the other!

I had a really bad one last year which got extremely infected so I had to have my Doctor take it off under general anaesthetic.

The procedure of having the toenail removed caused me to have a really bad reaction and I developed myoclonic spasms from it which I still have now even despite trying many different medications and Physical Therapy to try and combat them!

I agree with what the others have said. My Doctor told me to try and allow the nails to grow and not cut them too short. He also mentioned trying to cut a 'V' shape in the middle of the nail (I think it was there anyhow!) as that can sometimes prevent ingrown toenails from developing ... not very fashionable I know but if it stops any problems, it's worth it!!

I hope your toenail problems settle down soon and that you get to feeling better as I know how painful they can be, especially on an RSD limb!

Keep us posted!
Alison

I have not yet had nail trouble, but my doctors spend a lot of time examining them when I am there. It seems to me that there must be some correlation, as bobber said.

I am not really sure what they are looking for, but I think there are a lot of clues in our nails. Certain colorings, thick cuticles, even how they grow (such as growing inward) can all be signs of other chemical things going on in our bodies.

I often have a dream: Wouldn’t it be nice to have normal things going on with our bodies?

There is another trick to use.

That involves placing a tiny bit of sterile cotton, under the nail at the point you think will become ingrown. You just shove it gently under the nail, and do remove it and replace it when it gets wet.

This may keep the nail up off the nail bed enough to prevent ingrowing. Do it carefully.

If you search the net, you may find this suggestion as well.
Remember to keep it clean, and change it at least daily. You don't want infections etc to creep in.
