Hi All,
We'll yesterday I was dx. with possible/borderline pneumonia, fun, fun, double ear infections, and a sinue infection feel like this is the worst cold I have ever had. Anyway they gave me a anti-botic and prednisone to clear the lungs. Well when I first got hurt and was searching for doctors one gave me a tapering dose of prednisone because my arm was so inflamed and it worked great. Don't you know 7 years later for a different reason the prednisone helps my arm more than any other drug I have ever taken. If anyone has any ideas of why this works or has had a similar experience please let me know. Thanks, gabbycakes |

When I first got sick (4 years ago) the doctor that was treating me thought the cause of my pain was from bursitis (wrong diagnosis and 2 years later I was diagnoised w/ CRPS once my legs turned purple and ice cold). At the time I was prescribed high doses of steroids and I noticed large improvements for the duration of the high dose, however it was short lived. A couple years later when I had the correct diagnosis I brought up the steriods with my pain management doctor and she said steriods are not
meant to be an everyday medicine as the risked out weigh the benefits. My great grandma had an un-diagnosed pain disorder for most of her life and the only medicine that gave her relief were steriods so she took them daily but she passed away in her 50's and the cause was believed to be from the daily intake of steriods. |

Well gabby, the second nerve block I had was a double shot of depo medrol which is cortisone in some form, and I felt like I was a new person. for about 5 weeks. It was mahvelous darling. I don't know what the last block I had was but marvelous isn't the word I would use for the result, more like so-so. But Cortisone does things to your liver and I've always been told there is a limit to how often and how much you can have. I have a partially torn rotator cuff and when I was working they would only give me an injection every six months.
Enjoy. Sorry you are sick though, kinda hard to enjoy. Get better soon. pat |

I just took Prednizone for 7 days due to the crap I had. I had a virus, the shingles, and some sort of flu or cold. All 3 going on at the same time for the whole month of Dec. Christmas day was my worse. I was also given an antibotic. It might have helped my pain some due to now I am in more pain due to the shingles. I don't like taking it though due to it being a steroid. I'm glad it was only for 7 days.
I hope you start feeling better soon. |

Thanks everyone for all the responses. I just can't believe since I went Monday I have had almost no pain in my arm, which is just incredible. I have pain everyday in my RSD Arm, not screaming on the floor pain but pain that sometime knocks me out. I just wish there was something that they could come up with like a prenedsone which can be taken all the time. I suffer because I'm afraid to take the right medication to relieve my pain. I went that route in the beginning and for quite a few years but then decided I wanted to try and see how much pain I was really in and I was getting paranoid about what I was not feeling in other parts of my body so I went off all long last pain medication all anti-depressants, and the neurontin, lyrica and I can't remember what else. Currently I'm taking 1 type of accute pain medication, but regularly. Which I would like to stop that but I think I would kinda be out of commission. I'll have to see what the future brings. Just think if so many of us get relieve from Predneson we and could take it everyday it would make the narcotic drug makers profits tumble. Hm....thing about it, maybe it's done on purpose. Hi Gabby
i have internal RSD it occured after a gallbladder operation. my abdomen swelled up 30lbs. an ER doctor put me on prednisone and the inflamation melted off of me untill i tapered the dose and it all came back. long story short...i have a herniated disc in my back from all the fluid on the front of me. i have tried many times to get off the prednisone but when i due i swell more and my disc hurts. i am stuck at 30mgrs a day and cant get off of it until they find a drug to stop my swelling. i had another surgery done a few years ago to remove 25lbs of the swollen tissue and i swelled up even more, i have 70lbs of swelling on my abdomen now. on some people prednisone puts weight on them, its opposite on me. I pray you continue to be out of pain! Blessings Lori

Hi Lori, That is just unbelievable. I hope you are feeling ok and I'm complaining? Just an FYI my grandmother many years ago was on prednisone for 8 years I don't remember the dose and it was for a breathing issue or infection in the lungs it was back in the 80's and I was around 19 so I don't remember to much. But she is alive and well, except for the demantia, at 94 and lives with my Aunt. Prednisone gets a bad rap but many people take it for long periods I don't quite understand. I'am going to have a conversation about this with my PM doctor on Monday at my appt. Hope I can make it it's about an 1 to sometimes a 2 hours drive. I believe it weakens the immune system? Keep me posted. Gabbycakes |

I agree that prednisone can help with the pain, but another serious side effect can be osteoporosis, or the worsening of it. Since my RSD started with a bone fracture, I get really nervous about taking anything that will weaken my bones even more. Lisa

My second block was two injections of depo medrol in my sacroiliac. Best sleep ever, then four to five weeks close to pain free, and my poor swollen feet actually looked normal. Whatever I had this time is not nearly as affective. But I think cortisone affects the liver so they have limits to how much in a year you can get.
But I glad they are giving Lori a maintenance dose. The benefit she derives is probably greater than the risk to her liver. |
