I've read that ice is bad for RSD, and I've printed out a couple of articles about it to take to my PT. But I have PT tomorrow, and was wondering if anyone knows of others articles by docs other than H. Hooshmand M.D.?

hey if they want to put ice on you just sy NO and they will look at you funny, just tell them it hurts it is uncomfortable to you, and you have better luck with heat so if you dont mind go get me heat. If they still dont want to listen to you! after all it is your body say I will back next visit and leave, if they do not care to listen to you just leave and come back next visit. GOOD LUCK

Dream Poet,
I did a little bit of searching for you. The RSDSA has a brochure called "Hospital Protocols for the RSD/CRPS Patient" that does specifically state the rule of avoiding ice on the RSD/CRPS limb. Look for it near the bottom of this page: http://www.rsds.org/4/resources/index.html Although I am loathe to start any problems on this board, you are right to try to find information that is not from that particular doctor. The RSDSA is a very credible organization, and I recommend looking through their website very thoroughly. Not all of the information is perfect (there are a few medical studies they have posted in their "library" that are downright horrible), but it's generally the best site on the web. -Betsy |

Ice is terrible.
Ice is also a godsend for me. Icing my hand will always cause pain but it causes it later (mostly) rather than right at the moment. It will create pain where none existed. But it will also completely extinguish even the highest level pain immediately. It's not something I relish but if I get the screaming pain it goes into ice for several seconds (or longer). |

I went to PT today and told them I didn't want to use ice because it really hurt last time and because you aren't supposed to use ice if you have RSD. They had no problem with not using the ice...thy were VERY helpful and cooperative.
