Default Talk w/Dr. about flare up

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some suggestion /options. I have just gone thru a bad flare up that lasted 10-11 days. I slept less than 2 hrs a day up all night long and pain probably 8+ onscale. It finally seems to be coming down, all this with my stim cranked wicked high. So.... I have a appt with dr on Thursday to check scs and I want to talk with him about options for break thru pain, I have oxy at home but do not want to go to that resort.

Any suggestions you have would be appreciated, I figure if I go in knowing some options the better for me. My CRPS is left leg and foot.

Thanks, kim

I have learned both from being a long time nurse and a RSD sufferer that pain is nasty and if you let it get the upper hand it will be VERY MEAN! Since you have the oxy USE THE OXY! Take it as directed only for the time you need it. You have it for such pain flares. Oxy is not evil unless you abuse it.
Currently I have my SCS, Lidoderm patches, Motrin and Lortab. I have lost control but will soon have things under control

Heart Control is Everything

Flare up situations will happen no matter the best laid plans of you and your caregivers. Just gotta push through. I have been glad the farther I am from last flare, the longer stretch I seem to have between flares.

God has been good to me with the whole of using that stim, even sometimes wicked high to manage if a flare erupts. I have been staying away from the meds in our safe, as I want to be fully independent of them. Worst case scenario, yup, I would use as directed, and as Pooh also urged.

Even so, when that stim is cranked wicked high, I induce a state of paralysis of my lower body making any movement impossible, so I make sure I have first been to the restroom, then made the way to bed, THEN crank that stim to my limits of tolerance. Doc urges caution on extreme use since there are no white papers on what happens if the induced paralysis could produce other harm. SO...... I use with care...... document the event..... have my spouse watch over me, then when things relax, downplay the signal so stim resumes its management status.

Prayin all will be well,
Yup,

Not pushing Oxycontin; but without it, my 24/7 Spine/PN pain would be intollerable. I am grateful that I have something to help with the awful pain. There are times, in spite of the Oxycontin, the pain will break thru and need to take Percocet (Oxycodone) for breakthru. At least these help me get thru each day.

I strongly agree with Pooh not to allow the pain to get "out of control".

Wishing you less pain.

I feel the same as you Gerry...I plan my day around them...always staying ahead of the pain. I would like to withdraw and found an interesting article in my AARP magazine. I cannot find it on line to post.
It talks about opioids increasing sensitivity to pain (which sounds like me)…called “hyperalgesia”…all your other pains begin to hurt more.
I have been wondering if more injuries from the auto accident are presenting themselves because I have increased pain for really no reason. I doubt that as it has been three and a half years. I have however always had degenerative arthritis…and that is what aches so horribly on me now.
More information to add into the mix.
For now I am back into the swimming pool and really want to do some yoga..
Ahhhh life

In all things,
Prayin,

I am glad the scs provided enough relief for you to successfully withdraw from narcotics. But for those of us, for one reason or another, are unable to get relief from scs; these meds really are a godsend.

Hopefully you will soon be able to get relief with the cervical/arm issues you are now facing. It is a difficult call; especially after all you have been through.

Praying,

Gerry

Heart Thank you Gerry

How well I know the medications are a blessing when wrestling with overwhelming pain without the blessin gof a functioning scs implant. But for those very medications, I rather imagine I would long ago have taken up viewing grass and other horticultural delights from the root side. I far prefer the green side of the grass and the kaleidescopic color wheel of flowers and such.

OH......that arm pain... which lingers and lingers.... I pursue physical therapy, massage, and traction for now as palliative remedies for that pain because I do not have an scs which reaches the cervical heights of my neck, I do not have pain meds, I do not want to pursue more surgery, and I am wearing thin on tolerance of the pain....

Thank you for the dear message voicing concern. Yes it is there. Right now it is aching as a matter of fact, and I do one step at a time each day working to handle it.....

Blessings on you,
yup,

I had wondered if you might be considering an scs for the cervical area. Do the doctors feel the pain may eventually subside enough to become more tolerable? It is quite understandable dealing with all this pain would be wearing very thin.

Prayers this too shall soon pass; with less pain being the outcome.
