This is so vitally important, that I just had to post it here. I know many of you are parents and grandparents of young ones, and when they teethe, well, as the commercial states, you just rub Baby Orajel on the gums of the baby and their tears dry up, right?

Well, it also stops their breathing. Here's what just happened.

My sister in law just phoned me and said "Any kids on your block or babies??" I said 'oh my god, there's PLENTY on my block and around the corner...new babies, little babies, etc.

She said 'My daughter has a friend with an 8 month old baby. The baby was teething. The mom rubbed Baby Orajel on the gums and the kid turned blue in 30 seconds. They rushed him to the emergency room and the kid was revived.

The paramedics said "Oh, you used Baby Orajel, yeah, we see this happening all the time" It seems if the Baby Orajel gets into the throat it numbs the throat or windpipe or WHATEVER and there is no oxygen getting into the body. So the baby stops breathing"

My niece (after finding this out about Baby Orajel) immediately threw her bottle of the stuff into the garbage (she has a 6 month old).

She then called her pediatrician and told him what happened to her friend's baby. The pediatrician said "oh yeah, we know all about Baby Orajel".

Oh really??

So why isn't this on television or in the newspaper or whatever??

When I go out I'm telling all my neighbors.

Never thought a simple baby product could stop breathing.

So please pass this along to your family and friends.

Thank Goodness those days are over for me

I wasn't one to use the stuff much, if at all. To me, it was such a temporary fix to an ongoing problem. These past couple of years, we all just kind of dealt with it. The littlest one isn't quite done teething, but after 5 years of this, almost straight(yes, when you sit down to do the math...teething hasn't taken a break for me as a mom)...this mommy just doesn't care about teething anymore,lol...

OMG, we did use baby Orajel at 1st but soon learned of Hyland's teething tablets. There wonderful, at 1st we were worried about putting a tablet in a babies mouth but it melts as soon as it gets wet.

I have a couple tubes. LOL I never used it with my kids, they were never that bothered by teething. Then again they do chew on everything?????
I used it on my own mouth. And it is strong!!!!!!!

That's horrible! I wouldn't use half the products they try to push on children nowadays. I've never heard of a child dying from the pain of teething. When my son was in pain, I gave him frozen teethers or popsicles to bite, sometimes I'd hold him, and sometimes I'd just let him cry it out. He's got very strong lungs.

I used to work for a pediatrician who was also a pediatric cardiologist. I became close with one of our mothers because our babies were born around the same time. We compared milestones, etc. However, her daughter had a hole in her heart and needed a cardiac catheterization to determine the size. Our kids were toddlers and both of them cutting molars.

Her daughter went in for the cath, and the hole turned out to be much larger than expected. She died on the table - we ALL cried over that one. Yes, doctors DO cry.

I picked my son up after work, placed him in his carseat in the back. He was in a lot of pain and wailed the entire ride home, nearly piercing my eardrums. It was the sweetest sound I ever heard.

why oh why do the FDA always wait before warnings are issued or a product removed. Surely when it is "known" this way among docs etc this is more than enough evidence to stop a product.

our family are almost to the point of phobic over medications, OC and RX after some of the horrendous side effects we have experienced

chamomille tea (can be frozen into popsicles too) worked well for my kids when teething.

one thing baby orajel is good for...small scrapes and cuts.

i have always used this to numb up the wound on my kids. makes for tearless cleanup. with a son who is a dare devil soccer player...he had many road rashes.

I was just going to say my parents used whiskey too! I used it on my oldest when Oragel wasn't in the house. I am not condoning it, just saying it is no surprise that old time remedies sometimes don't have the side effects newer drugs do. One remedy I always used was wet washcloths in the freezer. I think both my kids walked and crawled with washcloths hanging out of their mouths for months! lol

Do any of you remember your mom throwing rubbing alcohol on you when your had a fever? I do. Wow, I never did that because the doctor scared the bejeesus out of me about it. lol
