I sure hope that I've spelled it correctly; I need some help with something:

I'm hoping to find a good, tastefully written/presented page regarding Netiquette for someone unaccustomed to using E-mail, IM, etc.

I had thought DocJohn or someone else within NT had posted a link, only I can't remember when or where, and I think I had spotted a link posted in the past . (If that's redundant, whoopsie.)

(Pssst.. I want to share it with a relative, who I suspect took offense when I pointed out that using all uppercase is actually shouting and asked her to stop doing so when writing me. She went silent from that moment on and I've not heard word boo from her since. I'd like her to see, from a third party, that I wasn't asking to be mean or anything; I just thought she might want to know for future reference and when communicating with other peeps as well .)

Ohhh, lemme add: If someone does happen to know of a good page on the topic, it doesn't have to be soley about the "shouting" aspect. There may be additional helpful info. that could be useful and she may not know but might like to keep in mind.

Never communicate in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. On the Net, this is *shouting* and it's considered rude. Without being able to see expressions or hear voices, there aren't many ways to express strong opinions in Net correspondence; so ALL CAPS has been designated for this purpose. Besides, if you've ever tried reading a document written in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, you'll know immediately how it can strain your eyes. Staring at a computer screen all day is hard enough to begin with, so don't make it harder. If you want to emphasize a word or phrase, ALL CAPS is fine, or better yet -- separate it from the rest of the text by using the * at either end, *like this*.

My pref. is the second one. I think that it conveys the info. better. Just a personal preference.

The first: I think where it states an exception will, inadvertenly, reinforce a "habit" that I'm hopeful will, soon, fall by the wayside.

A phrase too often has become a sentence turning into sentences in uppercase . I'd totally overlook it, only she is new to using a PC for "fun" and for E-mail, etc., and as she gets into it more, someone may not be very polite in letting her know how the caps can come across.

bobbi, Send your relative that page & explain/tell you simply wanted to inform her. The other night I was on chat & the other person was using all caps so I told her about it.

When I began using the internet, I didn't know shouting from hiccupping. I thought typing in caps was no different than typing in lower case. Imagine my surprised when someone yelled at me for SHOUTING. I said 'who's shouting??"

Then I understood.

The relative who was told this, believe me, has no idea about shouting. She has been told about this, she's probably embarassed, ****** off, and doesn't know what to do next.

All the advice that has been given in this thread is absolutely spot on.

How else can we learn, but by someone correcting our mistakes??? right?

Now if a person is told (nicely), what they are doing is wrong, but they say to themselves "who the heck are these people telling me how to write in an email, message board, etc.", and they continue to do what they wish. Well, that person just can't be educated.

Simple as that.

Most people like to learn and they appreciate it when they are set straight.

May I gently remind everyone that there are some people who cannot type in lower case because of vision problems. If this is the case, maybe try to find a software program that converts the upper case into a more acceptable form?
