Default I lost the neighbors dog!

let me explain. I live in a ritzy section of lake front homes, I am "next to" the lake front people without being lake front myself. Most of these folks go away Oct 1, and dont come back till April. Its quiet and nice around here. One of the bigger homes, rented out their In law suite to a young college couple. I have never met them. They called me at 8 this morn. Told me that home owner gave them my phone number in case they couldnt make it back from work, that my husband and I would be happy to walk their doggie. Really?! isnt that nice. He went on to explain about how they wouldnt be back till past midnight, and how the rescue doggie they are caring for would be stuck in his crate for 16 hours if I couldnt get to him. Sheesh! no pressure!

Long story short. I finally agreed. to walk him. I was told he is a nice doggie, very calm, easy going. I hooked up his leash, we hit the street, and I take him for my morning walk with me. A neighbor approached with her dauchand doggie, and this lil beagle flipped out! He wiggled and squirmed and before I could reach down to calm him ZIP! he was gone! He ran and ran and I quickly lost sight of him. The neighbor lady called her hubby out, and they went off walking calling his name. I went back home and got my own hubby. I called the dog warden, and several other neighbors in the surrounding area. The farm owners and such to keep an eye out.

It took 5 hours! of chasing, begging, baby talking and hiking to get this doggie. Afterwards, I called his parents to tell them what happened. They explained that "oh yeah, that leash is broken, and you have to be careful, and oh yeah, he is a rescue dog and is terrified of other dogs, and oh yeah, he is afraid of women, and oh yeah, he has escaped on us several times..."

I was ticked off! Why didnt they tell me this BEFORE?! So, I am exhausted from being in the woods for 5 hours chasing this scared lil doggie. He is home now, and back in his crate with fresh water, and fresh food, but you can bet your bottom dollar I wont walk him again. The parents were quite snippy, and rude to me when I explained the whole thing.

no good deed goes unpunished. I am so upset and have been so emotional all day worried about this dog freezing to death, and the coyotes, and the bears, and the hunters, and ....sheesh! mom and dad were just rude to me! Why do people have to be that way?

Shocked

These people have "entitlement" issues, and should NOT have a pet.

The bottom line...you helped the DOG.... I would concentrate on that. The owners....they can take a hike, IMO.

Beagles are high spirited dogs. People should not have them and crate them long term. They should get a cat, if they cannot be home for the dog.

You did a good job... given the circumstances. Focus on that, and not the duds (humans).

Really they should have mentioned all of that at the beginning!

And as MrsD says high energy dogs should not be in a crate for that length of time.
and he was rescued from what I wonder??

you did good for the dog so to you for that.

You were so nice to try and help and look at the grief you got. I'm sure the dog appreciated it because its owners certainly didn't. Sorry you had such a tough day. May your evening be peaceful - you deserve it.

OMG! I so agree with ALL of you!

Poor Dej, poor doggie. I wonder where they got him from, and if that agency is aware of how he is being (mis)treated.

The whole idea of rescue is to address the dog's issues and give him a fresh start. Not to let him continue having all the bad behaviors that got him put in a shelter to begin with.

Get a dog to take care of it, not to stick it in a crate ALL day. GRRRRRR!

My neighbors have a dog and everyone complains about him, he barks all day, and I mean all day. He's big and he gets loose and he's kind of wild and it scares people. Nobody knows how he'l act if you meet up with him loose.

My thing is, it's not his fault that his people chain him out on a 6' chain all the time, rain, sleet snow, 110 degrees. And I've been this close to reporting him, and suddenly the dog is gone - where? Who knows? Then he's back in a few weeks, miserable again.

I feel so sorry for that dog, even if they had to put him to sleep, he'd be better off than with those people.

The humans called me at 8 again this morn! Said how they were going to be away all day, and understood what happened yesterday, and have calmed down, and decided to ...get this..."give me another chance!" Are you kidding me? where is the hidden camera?! I explained that after the rudness, and lack of proper information about their doggie, that I have chosen to NEVER walk him again. I understand that they are new to the area, and I understand that they feel cornered, but I AM NOT AVAILABLE. I gave them the number of a local man who pets sits and house sits. He charges $5 per walk. VERY reasonable. He is retired, and hurting for money. They said "we cant afford $5 per walk. we either have to find something FREE! or we have to leave him in his crate all day!" I told them I was very sorry, but not only was *I* not available, but since they have now told me they frequently leave this doggie in a carrier for 12 hours at a shot, I have to inform the dog warden.

This man went on a venom filled tirade about what peices of crap live in this town, and how I was a useless person who lost his dog...(you can imagine his venom) I just listened as I walked across the room to hand the phone to my husband. He listened for a minute as this man kept spewing and then said "AHEM!" cleared his throat loudly. He went on to say "As law enforcement officers, we are MANDATORY reporters when we see situations that involved minor children or animals being abused, and what you do sir IS abuse! I am not sure who you think you are talking to but you are NEVER allowed to speak to my wife like that again! I will come down the street and explain that to you in person if it would help." the line went silent, and so was my husband. He finally spoke up again and said "either take that dog WITH YOU! or hire help for him. If you leave him we WILL call animal control. We have keys to the whole home that you are living in, and permission from the owners to peek if we hear that dog inside howling again. He finished it by saying "if you are in need of being gone for long periods then GET A CAT!"

the boy hung up on my DH and 15 mins later they stopped in front of the house, beeped the horn, and flipped a bird at my husband. We did see the doggie in the back seat tho. My DH is going to speak to the animal control officer in town today. Sheesh! How come people with money think others are supposed to shine their shoes just for the priviledge of doing it? They pay $900 a month in rent, and cant afford $5 for a dog walk? I saw Xbox, play station games at $50 a pop, fancy shoes, and so forth when I was in there yesterday. you can pay for your toys, but not your "rescued" dog.

I am simply beaten from all of the emotional, physical, and mental energy that was spent yesterday. what dopes!

Like I said. Some people are a**h****.

When they get called out on their rudeness, it makes more nastiness rise to the top.

They think that because they have money that it entitles them to be jerks to everyone they meet. Or that they're above the law or something. Hopefully that dog isnt suffering because they're jerks.
