Default And the world just caved in.

DH2B is looking at floor plans and tweaking them to try to come up with a plan for a house that he hopes to some day build. On the kitchen, he moves a wall and starts talking about putting an island in. My logical side pipes up that it would make more sense to put more cabinets on the back wall and additional counterspace because trying to move around an island in that kitchen in a wheelchiar is going to be difficult.

And then the world caved in with the realization that while planning for our future this is something we need to consider. It was a hard slap form reality that is may be something that we need to plan for. Today I hate this stupid disease.

Aw Legzz. that sucks.
That's why I hate it when I read the '10 year stats' that crop up now and then. Makes me face facts as it were. and dread the future...(and on a purely selfish note, I think of all the people I know who have deteriorated; they become the 50% that did worsen, so I'll be in the 50% that don't)

But on a lighter side, does that mean you're getting a new kitchen??
There's always a silver lining if you look hard enough

I was just DXed and DH completely redid kitchen. I wasn't too bad then, thought I never would progress but I did. Thank goodness Kitchen is big, can zoom around Island that was put in, but can now longer sit on higher seats at it or eat at it, too high for me in my chair. We have a great double door pantry/closet behind a table chair but I can't get to it unless I move chair. Reaching sink faucet hard and my knees crash into cabinet. Bathroom set up for someone in a chair, what a difference. IF doing it again (too late now) would remodel kitchen so could do alterations in future as needed. Got kitchen of my dreams but MS changed my dreams.

Well it looks like he will be on official laundry duty. He insists on putting the laundry room in the finished basement area. With a chute upstairs.

Hello?? I just vetoed the kitchen island because at the rate this stupid disease is progressing I am fairly certain I will be in a chair at some point!

Boys are stupid sometimes!

No worries though this plan he has doesn't include trying to build this place for about 2 years.

I am in a chair and very prickly about independence. Have a big bedroom on first floor (DH once built houses so built addition) and big roll-in shower in big WC friendly bathroom with stackable front loading washer/dryer and with grabber can turn on dryer on top. Can no longer go upstairs but did as much as I could before I couldn't. Hopefully you'll never have need, but organization never hurt anyone!!! DH would not be good at laundry on his own, lousy at cleaning, but can cook as I can no longer. Like a boy-scout - Be Prepared.

aww legz! I too spat at this disease for you!

I already live in a ranch with wide doors, and easy access stuff. We have a large pantry type area in the kitchen, that we converted to a laundry area. its awesome! We lost a broom closet to do it, but who cares! I dont have to climb a single stair to live here.

Tell the DH if he insists on laundry in the basement, he either needs an elevator, or a maid. take his pick.

OK, well if he is insisting on an island, tell him the kitchen has to be larger to accommodate a wheelchair if needed. Heck, anyone as they age may need a wheelchair.

Second, if he is insisting on the laundry to be downstairs, that's fine too. All you have to do is create a space that can be used for an elevator if the time comes. Many builders will do this for you. They can work out a closet so that it can become the "chute" for an elevator if needed. Or heck, go all out and put the elevator in. It's much cheaper if you do it while building anyway. But if you decide not to, then mapping out where the elevator will go ahead of time saves time, money and hassle.

To be honest, if Jim and I were building we wouldn't even have a basement. We'd build out and create a rec room attached to the house on the lot. The ramp we had installed, thank you to Ramp Up for the cost, was $23,000. That's a whole lot of cash and one you may want to put toward not having a basement. An elevator cost even more.
