A man contemplating suicide by jumping off a bridge... another comes up, shakes his hande, then shoves him off! Crazy world or what? There are people I wouldn't mind doing away with, but I'm busy. If they're gonna take care of it themselves I'd just as soon move along to my next victim and let em have at it.

The man who pushed him suffers from severe depression, was out of medicine, and had been held back 3 hours, preventing him from getting to his MD appointment to get a refill on his script for meds. He had been turned away twice from the line, and broke through a barricade to go tell the suicidal man on the ledge that he was holding up the rest of the world, while he begs for attention, and the rest of the world doesnt want to stop for him. He reached out his hand to him, and when the jumper reached for him, he pushed him!
When asked later, he said suicide jumpers should either jump or go home, but its unfair to hold up the rest of the world from living their lives, while they beg for attention out on ledges. The area had been stopped and barricaded for 5 hours while they tried to deal with the jumper, and the old man said he couldnt take it anymore.

it was covered on one of those "weired but true" news segments on the local channel here. It talked about how most folks feel sorry for those that need, and want attention, but how carried away it all gets when the rest of the world has to stop turning when ONE falls out of step. it was a facinating story, and used that incident as just one example. How many of us have seen a traffic accident on the side of the road, and after 2 hours of waiting to get home from work, we are TICKED OFF! I am sorry they had an accident, but I dont want it to stop MY life. Or a fire that gets the whole city block sectioned off, and you cannot get to your appointment, job or apartment. You feel bad that these folks got burned homes, but i need to get to MY place.
it went on to talk about how most of us want to be compassionate, but many more of us simply dont want our lives to stop to get it done for someone else. its really sad, but really true. Look at my grocery store example yesterday. Woman behind me couldnt wait long enough for MY order to get bagged up, and was trying to push past me even though it wasnt her turn. She was quite huffy about the whole thing. Lets not even mention that I am handicapped, and gripping my cart for security to not fall over, and she is up in my back pocket. We cant even wait for our own turns, let alone be kind to someone else who hasnt been able to get their life together. I guess the jumper owed the equivilant of $250k and was devestated financially. He didnt want to die, he just couldnt see any other way to end the pain. How many of us have felt in our hearts that we felt truly horrible for that person, but are really quite ticked off that we couldnt get on with our own troubles, lives, and dramas till this jerk got on with theirs? Scary stuff.

I can understand someone wanting to get to their appointment, their home, their job and on with their days activities. But.......how often is your day interrupted by someone contemplating suicide? We've often talked (on the MS forum) about slowing down, either by choice or necessity, but I just feel like we've become a self-centered and selfish society if we look at someone threatening to kill themselves as an "inconvenience" to our day. Yeah, it's not something you factor into the time frame when planning your day.
The man who pushed him had issues of his own.....and those two individuals together were a disaster waiting to happen. I can see both sides.....and by the grace of God I've never been on either side. I just think we could show a little more compassion towards our fellow man....whatever the situation is. The jumper was desperate and so was the pusher. I don't know what could have been done differently to help either of them....I wasn't there. I just hope and pray that they both get the attention they need.

So true, we need to be compassionate to one another. My biggest pet peeve is those who feel their lives are more important than others and it saddens me to see this happen every day in every situation.
Both of those individuals had their own problems and both needed and deserved attention to help them work it all out. |

... for those who feel so alone in their heavy burden that they just don't want to go on living. I think maybe people who 'threaten' suicide, are more "passive suicidal". I say that from personal experience...something I have overcome now. But I know what it's like to feel like you want to have your life ended. But you know full well you can't or won't do it yourself. But honestly you pray that someone else will do it for you. It can get so bad that your literally pray to God to take your life. It is a horrible horrible state to be in that I wouldn't wish off on anybody. The answer is not for others to feel inconvenienced. Because you never know when the shoe may be on the other foot. And all it takes is ONE person caring enough to, be A LITTLE inconvenienced, by taking a moment to try to help. We don't know what a single word of encouragement might do to keep someone from going over the edge. And the scary part of being passive suicidal is that you never know when you might cross the line to be active suicidal.
I hesitate in stating my opinion, because I don't want anyone to think I'm criticizing there opinion. And I value everyone's opinion. These are thoughts that came to my mind when reading this.... thoughts that jumps right out of my heart onto this keyboard! Life shouldn't be so difficult and sad for so many people! But if we survive it, it will make us a better and stronger person... at least it did me.
