Default The Dizzies

Dizzieness or unsteadiness are some of my worst symptoms. I've been dealing with my PCS for over a year now. The thing that scares me the most is how ingrained this dizziness feels inside of me. It just wont go away. If i excersice the slightest bit still i get very dizzy and unsteady...over a year later!

Today I tried to start a new job. My first full time job in over a year. I was ready to put my best foot forward and get on with my life. Unfortunatley I set myself up for failure. I was soo dizzy all day it felt like i was walking on a trampline and my spacial awareness was way out of wack. This dizziness is eating away at me everyday. I'm not sure who I am anymore.

My brain doesnt work like it used to. I'm a wreck.

Sounds like you need a vestibular assessment. There are balance and movement issues that can be easily addressed.

Some times a hear aid clinic can do a balance assessment. Look in the yellow pages under hearing and balance centers.

I was part of a concussion and dizziness study about 4 months into my pcs. They did 4 different assessments and couldnt pin point anything that actually made me dizzy. So this somewhat discouraged me from going back for more vestibular therapy that I'd have to pay for.

The one thing I've read is that dizziness should go away at some point...

Call a hearing aid and balance clinic and see how much they charge. Probably much less than a doctor's office.

The concussion and dizziness study must have been missing something important.

Who did the study?

It was done at the University in Calgary Alberta. They did multiple test from tracking my eyes, having me do quick movements, closing my eyes with a laser target on my head...etc.

I was seeing a Concussion specialist there about once a month to follow up and see how i was doing. I had a CT Scan a year ago when i hurt myself but never an MRI. The last time I saw my doc he was suprised its been a year and ive seen very little improvement. So he ordered me to have an MRI. My next appointment with him is after the MRI results arrive, which is in DECEMBER OF 2012!

It's amazing that neurotalk seems like that only place that people understand what you're going through.

All I've heard from people since i tried and failed at starting a new fulltime job is "you should have toughed it out".

grrr.

I'm very sorry to hear that. As we all know, toughing it out can make things worse. Obviously the people telling you that have never had a head injury.

I still get dizzy too. The accident that I was in was about twenty months ago. It comes and goes and is no where near as bad as it was within the first six months after the injury. I was experiencing vertigo (which I'd never experienced before; it's truly awful.)

I usually get dizzy now when I try to move too fast, or when I am trying to do things that require a little physical strength and stamina. I try to ignore it. And maybe slow down a little bit...

I still have dizziness after 11 months. Not to mention I developed a lot of new symptoms recently. I did have verstibular assessment and it is negative. I am doing better than average normal people. MRI and CT are negative.

Just forget it and live normal. Depression plays a big role in this PCS thing. It is something that we have a better control (comparing with other things) so don't let it hit you. Time will cure it or I will get use to it.

Hi Nitro. I'm currently going through some vestibular therapy in Edmonton with a company called LifeMark. They also have several locations in Calgary. The therapist did find an inner ear issue that she is treating me for which got my hopes up pretty high. AT first I got worse, but then after a few more treatments, I'm doing better with the dizziness. It's like there are different parts of a puzzle that may cause all these issues.

So, now I'm still going to her for thereapy once a week (By the way, $88 per treatment and if you have coverage, you might be able to claim it under Physio Therapy - so I've been told.

On top of this, I'm started going back to my Chiropractor who only does ART (Active Release THereapy) on my neck, jaw and shoulders. Because of my neck injury and spinal compression, there is no cracking involved. Next however, I want to try the NUCCA folks who do the gentle upper cervical / atlas adjustments. This part is going to cost about $800. No idea if I will have any kind of coverage for that. At this point, I don't care - my hopes are high that all of this will lead to significan relief!

It might be a good idea to give Lifemark or another vestibular clinic a call and see if they do the same or something different than the university did for you.

Good luck - this dizziness or vertigo and nausea is not fun.

I found this video of a baseball player who has trouble with his vestibular system after a concussion.

Just thought I might share it:
