Default Vestibular or Neurological Issue? Advice?

I am dealing with what i think is PCS for 16 months. Although my Tinnitus has fortunately diminished a bit of late I'm greatly struggling with dim lit settings. In particular a restaurant for lunch or going for a walk at night. Everything feels surreal, sort of like looking through a camera lens. Sort of unease, slight dizziness. A horrible feeling that is very very wierd and rather uncomfortable.

I think it's vestibular issue as once my brain can't rely on my vision in dark settings it relies on signals from the inner ear.

I'm not sure anyone on this board has dealt or familiar with this. If so please know i hope to hear from you.

Concussion March, 2014.

Symptoms: Vestibular issues. Tinnitus. Struggle dimly lit settings.

Hi Martin,

I don't have the same issue but I recall a recent thread (Laupau) that mentioned a new book ("Ghost in my brain", I think) in which the writer finally recovered from PCS after 8 years using logic puzzles and specialised prism glasses. I think the glasses may be something you want to look into, though I admit I'm not really sure.

Hopefully someone else more knowledgeable will chime in. If I'm off on this, sorry.

Hi Martin,

Have you gotten checked out by a neuro-opthalmologist for vision issues? My optometrist found no issues and told me I have 20/20 vision, but I went to a neuro-opthalmologist today and she was able to see some issues already after just one appointment. She said that optometrists won't be able to spot these issues as problems caused by brain injuries fall outside of their scope.

Current symptoms: Constant headaches that are mostly localized to the right side, head pressure, head sensitivity, moderate fatigue, fractured sleep, anxiety, mood swings, tremors, mild dizziness caused by head movement at times, neck pain, fullness in right ear, mild blurry vision

Symptoms that went away: Light/noise sensitivity, nausea, severe fatigue, moderate blurry vision, tinnitus

Current meds: Tramadol

Check with a neuro-optometrist physician. They specialized in brain injury vision issues. Usually it has something to do with convergence insufficiency and vestibular issues. I was told by their therapist that prism glasses are good for people with double visions or dizziness problems. It wouldn't hurt to check with ENT for inner ear tube testing also.

Thank you very much for your replies.

My vision during the day is fine. The only issues is dimly lit settings where everything seems warped/surreal.

I'm interested to learn more and will visit a neuro optomist, although i think it's an inner ear issue as the brain relies more on signals from the inner ear rather than eyes in dark settings.

at least that's what i think?

Hi Martin
I too have the same thing you describe. Both the "warped" vision problem and the problem with dimly lit and dark settings. Just to be clear, the vestibular system includes your eyes, your inner ear, and your muscles (proprioception), and all of the connections in the brain in between those 3 things. It is very complex and difficult to pinpoint exactly where the problems lie.

I believe that the "warped" vision as you describe it is a vestibular problem not detectable by the vision tests, at least in my case. I was checked out by a neuro-ophthalmologist who said there is nothing structurally wrong with my eyes and that I would not benefit from prism glasses. I have not been to see a developmental optometrist, which is a different kind of eye doctor. I have been seeing a vestibular therapist who specializes in vestibular issues. My "warped" vision and dizziness was extremely debilitating months after my injury. It has improved with vestibular therapy, though has not totally gone away.

Have you had vestibular therapy?

fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, vestibular balance and vision problems, vision static, tinnitus, hearing loss, slight sensitivity to noise, sometimes the insomnia comes back, sensitivity to stress, exercise intolerance, emotional problems - But I still have much to be thankful for.

I've had the exact same problem as yours for two years, but I never thought to consider it could be a vestibular issue. Also mine tends to last all day. I feel like my brain is "using" my sense of sound more than my sense of sight. It's weird. Hope you feel better though. I'll definitely look into vestibular therapy.
