So is the 5000 is that the b12 5 of the 1000? I'm sorry I'm confused.I have the fish oil pills and will take the multi. I will look for the better b complex. Tomorrow after the neuro I will let you know my blood result numbers. I was just talking to my moms friend who is in the medical field and she was saying the same as you about b12 and was also talking about magnesium. Thanks again and I will read up more about nutrients

Good for your mom's friend. She knows more than most doctors.

Yes, 5000 would be 5 of the 1000 mcg tablets/lozenges/whatever. At least 1000 mcg, but I would take five.

Happy reading, and best wishes.

I recently began taking Metanx as recommended by my neuro to try to calm down my burning feet. Is it any different than taking the vitamin B supplements I can get at my local drugstore? Somehow I feel safer since it is a prescription pill, but for all I know I may be just throwing away my money on it. Has anyone else taken Metanx for their Vit. B supplementation?

Lightbulb Metanx is excellent...

It has 3 activated versions of 3 of the B's in it.

It does NOT have thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, biotin in it.

It DOES have methycobalamin, activated B6 called P5P-- and metafolin (activated folic acid).

For BURNING in PN one does need thiamine --it can help alot. You can buy that
separately for very little $$ over the counter. 200-300mg a day in divided doses for one month will tell you if it is going to help.

You are very lucky to have been given such a good prescription. Of course, as mrsd wrote, it does not have the other vitamins. And it is much more expensive. But at least it has some very important vitamins in their really fine forms! Darn good product! And, like mrsd said, you can fill in the gaps.

I would get high quality vitamins that are non-prescription, save money, get as good a vitamin, and get a more complete set. But that's me, not necessarily you.

As anyone who has been watching the news about pharmaceuticals knows, just because it is a pharmaceutical doesn't mean it's better, more expensive yes, but frequently not better.

Unhappy Hi rose!

You may have missed the thread here about the change in availability of
methyfolate (MetaFolin), that is in Metanx.

The Merck company has stopped selling it to OTC repackagers, in an effort to
get more people to use the RX mixture which is stronger than the 800mcg very inexpensive MetaFolin. This manipulation by big business has now removed
a great product that could help MILLIONS at a reasonable price!

So one can no longer get the ingredients inexpensively that are in the Metanx.
Details here:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...ad.php?t=17913

The HS product alluded to costs over $30/month.

*&$$#!@$%#^%

You're right. I didn't read that thread thoroughly. I believe that is only part of the beginning. Apparently the stealth campaign is working, picking off things slowly and carefully so as not to get much attention. Those *&#@$$.

Thanks, mrsd.

I got the thiamine today and will start it tomorrow. I've never been a vitamin taker, or pill taker for that matter until last year, so I have an elementary question. should I start the dosing slowly, build it up so to speak, or start taking the 200 mg all at once? I am so impressed with the great info here...it's really given me hope that maybe I'll figure this all out and be able to make the pain go away (or at least tolerable). Thanks!

Lightbulb just start taking it...

100mg in the morning and 100mg at night.

It is cleared thru the urine fairly quickly, so dividing up the doses works better
to expose your tissues to the B1 before it is eliminated.

It has no side effects, that I have seen. It is very easy to tolerate.
It does have an odor, that some people notice, but that is it.

Default b complex question

hey all, have been reading your posts and would like to share. i am currently taking a b-complex, each capsule contains thiamine 103mg, methyl b 1000mcg, b2 2mg, b6 2mg and folic acid 100mcg. was instructed to take two tabs three times daily for past 6 weeks. about one week ago i began noticing calf cramps and pins and needles to feet. i do have rsd in right upper extremity so i suppose that could be the culprit as well. anyway just wondering if that sounded about right? i think i'm going to be switching after this bottle is empty. think i will order methyl-b in lozenge form and take separate b-6 complex. also take a,c,d,e, magnesium, primrose oil and dlphenyaalanine and grape seed extract. any input greatly appreciated. jenny
