Bizi,

You might get some rain soon.
We had tons of driving rain today -- from a storm heading now to LA and TX: Tropical Storm Debby.

Stay safe.
I did a look at our supplies and saw that our water is a year old . . . will need to check our battery situation too. I wonder who sells battery backups for my phone.

Dmom3005 06-24-2012 12:38 PM

We have had a tiny bit, but that is for about hmmm 3months.

Its been very bad. They are saying if it doesn't come soon
the farmers are in trouble. And not sure what all else.

Donna:grouphug::hug:

I think we may get some rain from tropical storm debbie. The tracking for this storm is all over the place! not sure where it will make land fall.

Finally, the rain has let up.
I think the storm has passed us now as it heads to the Florida panhandle.

Sending thoughts and stuff to florida. Hope they need or want the
stuff as much as we would like rain.

Hopefully we might get some one day.

We had a derecho last night that knocked out our power. It's a long-lived straight-line windstorm. We had two of them.

I thought that this was a tornado, but I didn't hear the train type of sound that people say that they hear. It just kept blowing, and blowing in from the Northwest. Then it stopped, and then we had another one. It affected most of our state. The clean up is going to be massive

Didn't anyone know that this happened in Virginia where I am? It was worse then that earthquake last year,or maybe even with it in it's destructiveness. I was depressed early this morning, because of concerns that I had about that storm. BF:confused:

Abbie 06-30-2012 07:44 PM

Hi BF!
I have been thinking of you and hoping
you would check in. I didn't know if you
would have electricity or not.

I AM HAPPY YOU CHECKED IN AND ARE OK!!!!

The storm line you spoke of started just NW of where
I live and quickly moved and worsened as it did in
your direction. We had lots of thunder, lightning,
and about an inch of rain.

Your area received much worse.... I've heard that there
are thousands without power and may not get it back
for a week or more. The news showed trees bigger
around than cars uprooted. Cars and houses destroyed.
We had several houses struck by lightning...keeping
fire departments busy. 5 houses in 1 area but only 2
were complete losses.

I'm not complaining.... things could be worse. I have a friend
in Colorado that I still am unable to reach. Her house is in
the fire zone. I just pray they got out....and the cell towers
are down.

Thank you abbie. I guess I'm feeling a little rejection, and depressed. I was surprised when the lights came on today. I was worried that the transformer of the house could be blown. The power surged, then brown downed over, and over again, and I was concerned that my electronics could be damaged.

Fireflies are out tonight. They are blinking in the yard. A small thunderstorm just went over us. I guess the Fireflies like the humidity. BF:hug::hug::hug:

Dmom3005 07-01-2012 11:56 AM

Steve

So glad you are okay.

I was in NW Indiana close to Hammond/Chicago area when the storm hit.

The first night we lost the satelite for the tv, but compared to the damage
it seems it did to the airport over in Chicago area. I wont complain.

Oh and their was hail hitting our hotel window, and we saw on the news
that their was golf ball hail in the area. So glad I was safely in my room
and not in the mess.

The next day we were driving around, trying to find the right exit. My
husband was sure he remembered right. He didn't.

But got caught in the worst downpour, we had a mess, but the area, just
like our area, really needs it. So no complaints. Then we saw hail again.

THen after a while it disappeared again. I heard on the radio, that a tree
or two had hit a vehicle with aperson inside. So they were trying to get
the person out. I was just so glad it wasn't us. And started saying a
prayer for the person.

We found the casino, after the rain, and went in. It rained somemore while
we were inside.

It rained that night. And it was nice the way home. Hit again when we
got home. Downpoured for about 15 minutes just long enough to scatter
the folks from the festivities uptown.

Donna

Dmom3005 07-01-2012 11:58 AM

I also have to say I had for some reason worried about leaving
the dogs home. Because of a fire.

I can't explain why.

But, there was a fire, just down our road, the house and garage were
a complete loss.

The family of 5 got out. Thanks to one of the adults waking up.

I am so thankful the whole town is working to help them. But it
was sure nice to come home to a house.

Mari

Hey Mari. I have no idea, because it was so strange. I heard the wind blowing at the South West side of this house. I got up off of the sofa, and didn't know what it was because of the windy noise that was blowing hard against the house. I didn't know what to do. I stood there. Then at some point it stopped. I was sort of shocked, and didn't know what this weather phenomenon was. Then we had a second one. The winds where blowing, and not stopping. I heard the oak tree in the southwest area near the house blowing very violently. I was hopeing at that point that the tree wouldn't come down on the house,in the part that I live in. Then the power went out, then came back on. Then it started flickering from on,to off about 20,to 25,or 30 times. Then I worried that this might have harmed the houses transformer. I also worried about my electronics that where gripped by the power surges, and brown downs. The power came back on about 12 hours later.

I went outside to see if my antennas where still there, and they where. I saw lightning going horizontally out of the clouds that flew by where is was. I have a 21 foot antenna on top of about 20 feet of mast,on top of the chimney. I put guide wires on the mast so it wouldn't blow down about several years ago. My other 5 antennas stayed in their places.

I find myself depressed. We have so little control over most things if you really think about it. Somethings bothering me,and it's getting worse. I think that I will try to get some more sleep. BF:hug::hug::hug:

Oh yes. I have never heard of a "derecho" before either. It came out of the North West. It rapidly moved over the mountains, and blew to the coast,DC,and other areas.

Our Governor said this event put out more power then any other event in Virginia history, that was not hurricane related. Did I say this right. I'm feeling a little confused:confused: BF:hug::hug::hug:

I think that the news said that about 4 people died in this"derecho". Trees crashed onto cars, and houses. One person said that he saw a big tree that looked like it had been twisted around the trunk of the tree, and it hit the ground.

I don't want to go through another one of these. To many things could go wrong. BF:hug::hug::hug:

Dear Steve,

You said this exactly right.

The wind force was 90 miles per hour.

A Category I hurricane is from 74-95 miles per hour. That drecho was a very high Category I -- if we were comparing it to hurricanes.

I am sorry you are feeling rejected and depressed. I hope you feel better. You can write to me about it if you wish.

El Niņo/La Niņa "transition year?"

The weather has been freaky everywhere it seems. Hot for starters. I am thinking there must be one of those odd global current things driving many events and conditions, like El Niņo or something like that.

a quick search uncovered this (blog) article, posted July 3rd, which states:
Quote:

This is a transition year from the La Niņa weather seen in 2011 to El Nino, which should take full effect by the early fall of 2012.
interesting. it goes on to speculate about the implications on drought etc.

all i know is, here, it was already hot in early June which should be comfortably warm in this area. What's more they keep promising rain which never shows up --- that said i would NOT like one of those derechos that just hit the US... yikes, i'll just keep wetting down my head with the spraybottle thank you.

Tips to stay comfortable in the heat

Hi,

Here is a web site with information about how to stay cool:

http://www.wikihow.com/Sleep-Comfortably-on-a-Hot-Night

Quote:

Keep your neck cool. It works the same way as keeping your feet cool. Try using a cooling pack that works for you, or simply just place a damp towel on your neck.
.
.
.
Wet your face. Use a damp cloth or towel to wet your face or arms. Stand in front of a fan, or blowing air (while you are still damp). This method works quickly and easily. It acts like your natural sweat, but on a quicker and larger scale.
.
.
.
Run your wrists under the cold tap. Your wrists and the inside of your arm are areas where your blood stream flows closest to the surface of your body. Running them under cold water for a minute will cool your blood down, making your whole body cooler.
Holding ice (or a cold plastic bottle of water from the fridge) on the inside of my arm (in the crook of my elbow) does work for me sometimes.

Ugh.

I just want to say, I really empathize. I hear you and I believe you feel miserable. Having AC does not mean you are automatically OK, or that you are not "allowed" to feel bad. If you feel bad you feel bad and that's about the size of it.

It's ok to tell us about it too. Venting is fine. Heck, if only we had better and cooler VENTilation we wouldn't have the need to VENT so much. would we?? ;) But since we don't... you just vent away. It's OK. We are here to hear.

2003 was much hotter, yet I tolerated that and didn't have a AC, nor even a single fan then!!! This year I have fans on me always yet always feel weak and fatigued. There just is a lot more to it than the number on a thermometer. With minor exertion I have had dizzy spells, nausea, bp drops. Sometimes I've felt so bad, I have laid down on the tile floor in just a T-shirt, to let the floor drink heat away from the full length of my body.

I seem to feel it more than my folks even. Made a comment to mom about how i feel this constantly - she says, it seems fine right now. (???!!!:Noooo: yarrright!) Then she says it's because I don't go outside, it's much better out - and sends me out with the garbage. Out I go and am all but suffocated... come back and tell her she's nuts. Same environment, different perceptions.

I wonder if there is some other aspect of the "heat" this year - maybe the air pressure or frequent changes in that, that weren't present other times, or something..... something that could affect migraines. I wonder if we could be getting some partial migraine sx w/o a full migraine. it's just a thought, since you and i both have a problem with those beasties, and sounds like we both have an extraordinary problem with the heat this year.

hang in there sweetie. wet down your head. run your wrists under the tap. do not take hot showers. try cool-to-just-tepid showers (not cold).

you're not alone.

I also only feel bad if I vent to someone that has no electricity.

Then its really bad to me. I went 3 weeks without it once.

And really understand what its like.

Donna:grouphug:

Addy 07-05-2012 01:39 PM

Goodness... I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for those without electricity! I am finally grateful that we have sunshine... it has been the wettest spring/summer beginning that I can remember.

My best hint for helping you sleep when its so difficult - is a hot water bottle with COLD water - keep it in the fridge until you need it. They are cheap - buy a few! Putting my feet on these helps immensely. OR, cold peas... anything you've kept in the freezer for a while.

waves 07-06-2012 05:12 AM

last night i went all out. wet my t-shirt. and kept rewetting it. esp around the shoulders and front collar. sprayed down back and front too but tried to avoid the back collar to avoid getting cervical tension/headache.

it worked. it really really worked. i got sleepy and had another migraine starting to i went to bed still damp all over. hair too.
