Just got off phone with a super Verizon Tech. She did the Verizon Internet Security Suite thing.

It said it got IT ALL!!!

Yeah, right!!!

As soon as the compuer re-booted, THERE IT WAS AGAIN.

SO if you guys don't see me for a while, it's because this computer either crashed, burned, or I threw it against the wall.

Might not be around for a while.

Mel if you don't have anything vital on the computer or already have important things backed up on a CD or flash drive, you can format & reinstall xp.

I think earlier you said the XP disk or key was lost??

You might check into getting a replacement XP CD from Microsoft. Or the computer manufacturer if it's still under warranty..

Or if you really want to try something new pick up a computer magazine with a Linux Live CD - Ubuntu , Kubuntu , SimplyMephis & Mandriva are all very easy to install. But the fun thing is you can run it from the live cd to see if you like it before installing it.

these Linux programs {called distros} are now nearly as simple to use as windows - & they are free {well except for the cost of the magazine- but it's the easiest way to try them}
there's more threads about Linux & info in the sticky too.

Just thinking you could have one on hand in case XP croaks before you find or get a replacement XP CD.

It might be too late to save /back up files now - they might be infected.

I'd download a couple and then install them and try them one by one to try to totally wipe out the virus.

Melody, my laptop computer is going through something similar right now. I've cried, wanted to pull my hair out, bite my fingernails to nubs.... .

My computers? Never without full armor. Doesn't matter, according to tech support nearly a decade ago and tech support yesterday. Some times - no matter how well a computer is set to be protected -computers can pick up unwanted nasties.

Most infections? From rather mundane sites, so said the tech man.

Like many others I've read about the past few days: My computer showed no effects of having any prob. It suddenly crashed and that's where it's been ever since.

Could not agree more than I do with Jo; if your "vitals" (files, etc.) are not already saved, I'd aim for those first (but only if certain that they are not infected or can't pass along any virus back to yourself or to anyone else).

The O/S discs didn't come with my laptop yet should arrive via FedEx by Thursday. (Tech support was shocked there were no discs included. Long story is that there weren't.)

I hope that you're able to get your 'puter sanitized and running smoothly soon.

this is the virus that wiped out hubby's computer at the club. he clicked on a pop up that said he wand a windows virus. blah blah...long story, but he had to have the hard drive wiped clean.

they backed up all the files he told them were important, but after hey checked them, they don't him not to use them. it was a good thing for daily work documents, we had paper files.

Oh my god, what a nightmare. WE don't have any thing important to back up. But who the heck wants to wipe out a hard drive and re-install everything? I know I don't.

When I saw that nasty little bugger was back I said "oh no".

But (and this is different than what happened last week), I was able to get on the internet and hook up with the Verizon Tech person.

She ran my anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and it seemed to get it all. It found the antivirxp08 and deleted it.

Then she rebooted my computer and

BAM, THERE IT WAS AGAIN.

It would not let me do the remove thing from the control panel. It has a built in blocker that said it was from Microsoft. Good God!!

And luckily, Verizon called me back at 11:20 p.m and told me 'I've opened up a ticket at Radial Point (she explained that this is Internet Security Suite's SUPREME tech person. And that they would be calling me back later that night.

I said "I don't think so, I'm going to bed". So they called me 10:00 am.this morning.

What a nice guy.

He installed some experimental SUPER ANTISPYWARE THINGEE, and he explained that last week we got rid of most of the files, but that it hides and installs itself in some root file. We never got the root file.

This morning, the guy was going into my config system, and he deleted a file, then the super spyware thing deleted EVERYTHING RELATED TO TROJANS, Antivirxp08, etc. etc.

That did it.

He told me to run this software once a week (disabling my Internet Security Suite), and once I'm finished, disabling it again.

So let me get this straight.

I can go and get a magazine with a Linux CD on it? And if I have to wipe out (re-format), my hard drive, I can install Linux instead of Windows XP.

I don't have any windows disc because this was a bundle thing.

And let me ask two more questions.

If I get a laptop, buy a router, connect the whole thing.... and this thing comes back on my computer, DOES THIS MEAN IT WILL INFECT MY LAPTOP?

How can I make sure this won't happen.

And how come (after last week), every time I want to come on these boards I have to type in my user ID and passwords. I tried clicking on "remember", but it always prompts me.

Does this have something to do with the anti-spam thingee??

If you don't share any files between the computers there should be no problem

That virus is a mean one. Hopefully he got it all otherwise it will slowly come back again. A real pain in the buttski!!

A router has a built in firewall, and your computer has one making it double duty so to speak, but it doesnt mean you cant get a virus. All the virus protection in the world wont help if a person allows the file to be downloaded to their pc.

You just have to be super critical of anything you download, and dont ever click on a antivirus pop up. Anywhere you click on it gives it permission to download to your pc. I even heard that using the task manager to close it may even not work, but it is better than clicking on the red X, or clicking anywhere really.

Melody your actually better off logging in every time. This means your computer isnt remembering anything, good or bad. You can change it, but I wouldnt change it back until you know for sure it is gone.

If you really want it to remember your passwords, go into tools then options, then to the security tab and select remember passwords of websites.

I changed my passwords ON EVERY SITE I GO TO.

I don't trust the internet any more.

I even went out and bought a pre-paid visa and I'll use that for all future online purchases.

What a world we live in, where you can get a virus even though you have anti-virus protection.

Oh well.

Let's just keep fingers, toes and anything else I have CROSSED that this THING doesn't resurrect itself.

Allen, how do you close a pop up like that if you can't X it out?

Son just had this on his PC and he had to reformat his PC. He would just X out the popup so in the future I want to try to stop this before it gets in.
