Default Taping Experiences Anyone?

Some yrs back before hip replacement in 2010, I had gone to a PT for knee and he did some taping but I didn't stick with this work...guess I was so consumed with groin pain and ended up with hip replacement...so now almost 5 yrs later, knee is worse and foot/ankle worse and ankle weaker. OA involved too, but worse since leg turned out shorter after replacement.....it's been a journey I never thought I'd be on.

So I'm thinking of going back to taping to help with inflammation and stability of knee and foot/ankle.

I saw a few comments here but can't find them now so throwing it out asking of anyone's taping experiences. Thanks...

Default Athletic Tape

I've not used tape in many, many years, but I was involved in athletics, high jumping in particular, when I was young. I have hypermobility in my joints so used special tape on my knees to avoid major damage.

Perhaps you could talk with a Physiotherapist or even a Podiatrist to see if they think it could help you in your recovery. There would be exercizes that could help strengthen those muscles as well.

Thanks Lara for your comments. I just ordered 2 rolls of KT tape and will work with this tape and see if I can stabilize my creeking/pain knee (when I walk)....no pain to speak of when not walking. THis knee started to make noise when I was 57 and I'll be 77....so 20 yrs. I'll also work on taping the foot/ankle as OA has developed major since my famous hip mess and shorter leg outcome. I do wear heal lift now but didn't catch it soon enough as I see things now.

I'm doing all I can before I try PRP injections, no guarantee, but this work can regenerate ligaments/bone etc. I've had dextrose prolo in my shoulder and it gave me 3 yrs help with no pain so I know it can work. PRP is just more pricey and one could need 2-3 sessions.

The tape is a cheap investment. I'd be thrilled if it helps.

Well, personally I'd be asking a Physiotherapist for a lesson in application or at least some professional advice about whether is could be a postitive treatment or not considering your specific conditions.

You really need to know exactly how and where to apply that type of tape although there would be instructions you could find. Frankly, I wouldn't be just taping up willy nilly without advice.

What about the regular elastic bandages that come as a tube? I have one for knee and one for elbow as I had a problem with the cubital tunnel at one time. I really think from reading your posts that you need some sort of physical therapy to strengthen those muscles that have been affected. Just my personal thoughts though.

I'll give going to a PT some thought, got to go to my primary doc to get a script for PT...otherwise PT work here without insurance can cost $100+ per session.

I did get my first taping from a PT years back....there are many videos to self teach. A friend says her friend buys her tape at walmart here and does her own taping. I think her friend went to a PT first and then went off on her own to tape. It's helping her friend a lot she tells me.

The KT tape site has lots of videos on how to apply the tape.

But one should still get a PT's advice, because if you tape wrongly you can compress something you shouldn't, or not get the correct results. Either way, it looks like a professional should be on hand to help.

Wearing anything too tightly including slip on braces can compress blood vessels and may lead to blood clots in the legs.
One doesn't need that for sure!

Turns out my daughter has used tape on some her children's joints, both are athletic and it's helped keep them stronger, the boy who is 15 never slows down. She is now thinking of doing some taping for her foot that has ligament issues. A friend's daughter had a foot reconstruction surgery almost a year ago and she's still using crutches....I hear she regrets the surgery and thinking now too bad she didn't know about taping, could have "maybe" helped her issue. The daughter is 56. My friend thinks Judy will have a limp forever. Hard to know but it's been a really really hard surgery.

Just talked via email to Judy who had foot reconstruction surgery almost a year ago and she is using K tape and says it's helping....long long rehab but as we know can't reverse surgery. Glad she's up on the tape, she sees a PT often.

Well, the KT tape arrived and I'm experimenting. My right wrist is arthritic and not terrible but know something is not perfect...so I've taped it and so far feel a stability.

Then watching the videos, taped the IT Band area that was also damaged with the hip replacement.....the top of thigh adjacent to incision area.

Then worked on my knee with some taping.

I've been talking to a chiro office but haven't gone yet as I've just been muddling along with what I do, turns out the chiro does taping. So I'll most likely go to her soon for laser therapy and taping as well.

I'm pretty impressed, almost amazed this morning after sleeping with taped knee, wrist and IT band area. I can walk better this morning, my hand/wrist do not hurt this morning, so I just taped the other wrist...both are arthritic but not the worst of my body issues.

So reading more instructions, I bought the cotton elastic tape, but see on the box that the synthetic lasts longer re: days of wear and level of support -- so my next purchase I'll get the synthetic elastic tape. Hopefully, I'm on to something good to keep me moving and less pain.

kttape.com/instructions is the instructional video.

These are my experiences only.
