Default Tysabri + Chemo

If its posted elsewhere steer me in the direction. If not, what have if any of you's combined with Ty? My doc discussed one quickly with me explained the risks mostly. My MRI from today shows a huge lesion that wasnt there 1 yr ago. Numbness to prove it. Chemo drugs + Ty anyone?

I don't know anyone who has combined chemo with Ty, but I would be terrified at what the possible side effects could do to my body.

If Tysabri is not doing the job for you, then why don't you switch rather than add on?

Good wishes.

Are you saying that your doctor suggested ADDING chemo to the ty?? Ummm....NOT SO MUCH!! Chemo is an immunosupressant....cannot be given while on Ty...it is contraindicated. I had to wait at least 30 days AFTER having Ty before having chemo! And some doctors even suggested waiting longer than 30 (which I did). In fact, I don't think any Touch center would allow you to have ty if you told them you had chemo. I'd double check this...but I know there's NO way I'd mix chemo with ty.

Please double check this!!

AGreed! that would be a HUGE risk to take! Please, make your DR explain himself, and why he would be willing to take such a large risk or PML for you?

This doesnt sound safe, nor approved by any guidelines I have ever seen.

I hope you can get some answers.

Nope to the chemo and Tysabri. Tysabri is a monotherapy. No immunosuppressants allowed. Limited use of steroids to treat relapse if they are SURE it's a relapse. No certified infusion center will infuse Tysabri along with chemo. Any doctor prescribing Tysabri knows that or they shouldn't be prescribing Tysabri.

I'd be asking a lot more questions.

Problem is im a paraplegic for 20yrs losing my hands to MS. I was diagnosed late cause I couldnt walk to begin with and didnt show symptoms till my face was numb one morning almost 4 yrs ago. Doc and I already discussed the possible outcome of Ty and Chemo. Told him id sign a release.

Honestly I wanted to try adding Estriol to Copaxone last yr but neuro wanted nothing to do with Estriol. Its just a estrogen. Sheesh look at the possible outcomes of Ty and thats what hes was comfy with. I need something fast cause im losing feeling on a weekly basis.

This is what ended easy access to estriol
http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsro.../ucm116832.htm

Im getting off track. So what can be combined with Ty then?

As said above, "No certified infusion center will infuse Tysabri along with chemo" It is completely against all protocols for Tysabri.

Even if you signed a release I would be extremely shocked - and scared - if someone gave you a Ty infusion knowing you were on chemo!!

Have you looked into HiCy/Revimmune instead of the Ty?

Again, Ty is a monotherapy - meaning it's Ty and NOTHING else. If/When you go off of Ty, there is a "wash out" period before you should begin anything else, including chemo.

How many Ty infusions have you had? Have you given it long enough to start working? What results are you hoping for anyhow?

Tysabri has proven deterimental to those who take immune suppression with it. They get extraordinarly ill, and several have died! There are STRICT protocols in place that if you are on Tysabri, the TOUCH folks will refuse to give your infusion if you are taking steroids most times, let alone chemo.

If you feel that Ty isnt working well for you, it may be time to come off of it, and do the wash out peroid, before you consider something like HyC, or other such high level treatments.

I am so sorry that things have progressed this far for you, and I am sure you are scared, and frustrated, but I dont believe any MD, even when gifted with a release, would risk your life, his license, and the fall out that would be created by your demise from such risky treatments.

Your MD has to face peer review, morbidity and mortality conferences, and has to answer to his bosses, colleges, and the license boards if he hurts you, let alone kills you.

Have you been to an MS center? They usually are up on the cutting edge of whats going on, and what can safely be done. I do hope you find better answers.
