Default Hi new member as of today

Hi,
Actually I am a registered nurse yet know nothing about dental issues . I come here today to see if i can get some concrete answers since my dentist group doesn't seem to be as concerned about my issues as i am.
This is the third time in my life (I am now 57) that i have had teeth extracted. In my mid twenties i had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted under general anesthesia in a hospital setting and developed dry socket on both lower cavities. Daily packing for about a week and healed uneventfully...Pain? yes but back then guess i dealt with it better. 4 months ago i had a right back molar extracted 2 days after with severe pain that had me curled into a fetal position...had to BEG my dentist to see me and yes it was dry socket again...packing every 2 days for 10 days and then all seemed to be well afterwards...as long as the packing was in~ the pain was minimal. Aug 25, 2011 I had last 2 molars on bottom right extracted under general and again the pain sooooooooooooo severe right from post op but within 2 days felt like my head was going to explode, severe throbbing of the jaw, pain radiating from jawline to ear, earache, very moody and very weak as over the course of 5 days i lost 5 pounds bringing me down to 105 pounds at 5'3. On the 4th day after surgery I went to office and had the 2 sockets packed...was told it was "borderline " dry socket...ummmmmmmmm it either IS or is not there is no borderline as far as i am concerned. Packing was left in for 3 days and surgeon saw me 1 week post op and took out the packing and said i would be fine....knowing my past history I begged him to repack it because there is now a 4 day holiday weekend with no access to dental care.....pain is only slightly better it only throbs 23 hours a day instead of 24.....lol not funny dry socket pain is atrocious. My question is....how much longer? when do i know i am out of the woods...no temp, but I am so miserable. live alone and have no support system and i just can't believe the pain is still this severe 9 days after surgery. My dental group doesn't seem to be very supportive and considers me a "problem patient" if you get what i mean. In fact one dentist in the group refuses to see me at all he was in the office yesterday and when i asked to come in to be repacked he told the girls to tell me he was not going to treat me....that i should drive 45 miles to the office in another city to see the surgeon who actually did the surgery I am not his patient. Anyone in this forum have some encouraging words for me> Even as an RN i think this amount of pain for this long is not right. PS I am using tylenol 500mg for pain as the Vicodin and/or codeine they gave me made me violently nauseated. Help!!!!!!!!!! Any suggestions? Thank you for reading!

Heart Oh, mermaid, I'm so glad you found us!

He told his staff to tell you he wasn't going to treat you??! Unethical and a coward ... A double charmer!

I'm so sorry you're going through such a difficult time. I'm sure the link Chemar's provided will connect you with folks who have understanding of & experience with dry socket. Their knowledge will help you, give you a sense of ... Well, it's a buzzword these days, but I think you'll feel some power, just because you'll understand better the beginning/middle/end process.

I live alone too & know how empty that can feel when you're sick. This place is terrific when it comes to support. Maybe all we can do is say I know, I've been there; sometimes, though, those are the sweetest words I could hear.

Ask questions, keep coming back, & take good care!

Hi Mermaid,
I have posted my dry socket experience here just recently. I also just found out I have a sinus communication. My dry socket has healed over but it is 6 weeks and I still have some pain once in a while. My hole is almost closed finally but it is so sensitive and sore as the gums heal. I am sorry that the dental practice is treating you that way, this is unethical and makes you think if they had something to hide. I did not have a great extraction experience. I did not have my upper left molar extracted by an oral surgeon but I am not under the care of one. I have to be honest the last two days it has been tight very tight and I believe that is the healing taking place. I had an issue with the dentist that took it out and the owner of the practice took over my case and has seen me for weeks to check for any kind of infection and to make sure the healing is going the right way. I knew I had a communication but he said he did not see it and if it was it was small and will heal on it's own but that is not good enough for me. Went to an oral surgeon and he gave me a decongestant and antibiotic and is hopeful even though it has been this long will still heal on its own because now it is being treated so it can. I know how you feel with being alone. I am not physically alone being I have 2 small children a loving husband and great friends but nobody understands the frustration and anxiety that has come along with this. SInce AUgust 8th I have cried everyday and felt as though I was falling into a depression because of the frustration and everything that has come along with this experience. Yesterday was the first day I felt as though things will get better and I had a positive attitude. I have become to explore my faith in GOD and feel as though he will take care of me. Everything is going to be ok. You will heal and this will also be a thing of the past. It will take time so don't get discouraged and frustrated. I know it sucks and my dry socket was not so painful it was a weird kind. So today it looks smaller and I am just hoping the sinus communication is healing. I will not know till Monday. I do have a regular DES appt this morning for a follow up to check it. You can write to me everyday on here if you want to vent and I will keep you updated on me and you can keep me updated on you. Please feel better and hope the rest of the day you start to feel a little better.
Have a great day
Nicole

Hi Mermaid629,
I am new here as well. I had the same dry socket problem as you did back when I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed. It was so long ago, but I do remember having to return to the oral surgeon every other day to be repacked. I remember calling and asking should it hurt worse a week later then when I actual had them removed. He had me come right in. I have had my share of those type of doctors as you have experienced. I just wanted to let you know that my husband just recently had all his top teeth removed for dentures and he had a dry socket problem. They not only packed it, but also put him on an antibiotic. He had no problem after that. Best of luck to you.

Hi. I can't imagine your experience with dentists. I, myself am a dental phobic. I cannot imagine a doctor indicating that he wouldn't treat you and that you should drive someplace else to be treated? This is a dentist?? This is not even a human being.

I am so sorry for what you have gone through.

I would report this man. I called him a man? He's not even that.

And he certainly has no business being in that profession. Jeez, we are scared enough without dealing with a professional who shows no compassion.

I hope you find a better and more caring dentist.

Take care, and Welcome to Neurotalk

Melody

I feel your pain. I have had 6 teeth extracted and every time- dry socket. I figured it out that it's because I clench my teeth at night and that creates a suction in your mouth. The same reason they say not to smoke, because the suction dislodges any clot or packing. Clove oil and/or packing (they sell it at pharmacies) helped a little, but I HATE cloves, so I was too grossed out to continue. I was told if I need extractions again (and I'm sure I will) to wear a mouth guard at night so I can't clench down.

I had to get some percocet the last time, I went to my primary doctor and begged. I was sitting on the step of the oral surgeons with an ice pack on my face, rocking in pain for 2 hours before they opened and once they got in- was basically told Tylenol 3 was the best they could do, so I called my PCP and he gave me a script, he knew I wasn't going to abuse it.

I'd see your PCP, it can't hurt to ask. If not, to the ER I would go, then to a lawyer, since they are basically refusing to treat you.
