Ok, I know this sounds weird and it is. I smell odors where there shouldn't be any. Let me explain. I will smell flowers, particularly roses, while I am in my car. I have never had flowers or any air fresheners in my car. I don't smell it every time just sometimes. I will be at work and I will smell crazy stuff like bacon. Umm bacon lol. And no I don't work in any kind of food industry. Is my nervous system going crazy or is this an indication of another problem? I am a recovered MVD patient. I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia in 2009 and had MVD surgery for that in 2010. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathyand Radial Neuropathy. I have a LOT of problems with these 2 conditions. I have not started any new medications and still take the same medications that I have for the last several years. I take a maintenance dose of Epitol (200mg @ day), Ramipril, Amlodipine and Hydrochlorothiazide everyday. The last 3 are for hypertension.

This is really weird cause all of a sudden out of the blue I will smell something that shouldn't be there. I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this.

The ACE inhibitor over time depletes zinc. Have a zinc blood level run and see if you are low. Fixing that can fix smell and taste problems in some people.

The HCTZ depletes potassium and magnesium. So eating foods high in potassium is a good idea. You can take a magnesium supplement (but not OXIDE form) and see if that helps too.
200mg elemental of any chelate, or 2 SlowMags a day.

These are common nutritional problems with the drugs you mentioned.

Thank you very much mrsD. When you talk about the ACE inhibitor....which medication is that? I am assuming that the HCTZ is the Hydrochlorothiazide correct? I just had extensive blood work done on my last Dr's visit which was about 2 weeks ago. I do not know what they tested for but they said my bad cholesterol was a tiny bit high but good cholesterol was normal. They said all other tests were normal. I guess I will have to ask them what they tested for. Again, thanks for the info.

The Ramipril is an ACE inhibitor.

Zinc levels are not part of a standard chem panel that doctors typically order. It has to be ordered separately. I'd get zinc, zinc/copper ratio, and copper while you are at it. We are seeing some posters here on PN low in copper for some reason.

Do you use acid blocking drugs like Prilosec (proton pump inhibitor) and Zantac (H2 antagonist)? These drugs lower acid in the stomach which is important for absorption of zinc and other minerals. (and also B12 and folate).

Ok so I'm sure they didn't check zinc levels. I have never used Prilosec or Zantac.
