I just went into my bathroom and turned on the lights. Soon as I turned the lights on, the bulbs in the fixture above the sink AND the bulb in fixture above the shower started to flicker. Like someone was rapidly turning the lights on and off. Being freaked out, I turned the lights back off and waited a few seconds and then turned them back on.
Only one lightbulb survived the weirdness. One of the incandescent bulbs above the sink. The light in the shower was dead, and so were the other 3 bulbs in the fixture above the sink. (one of those bulbs had actually been dead for a couple of days. I cant change it out myself, cant climb the stepladder to do it) So, now it's really really dark in my bathroom. I'm a little scared to turn the lights on in there now. Anyone here know about electricity? Does this sound like some freak thing happening, or maybe the one bulb that died the other day could have caused a short or something? (I know you're not supposed to leave dead bulbs in fixtures because they can possibly cause shorts, or sometimes a fire) or does it sound like I've got an electrical problem in my bathroom because whatever happened killed the bulbs in two fixtures? Wish it had waited till later to blow the lights. I havent washed my hair yet, and I cant shower in a dark room. I'm going to have to go use my parents shower. Hope it's just a freak thing with the lightbulbs, and that my b-in-law will come over later (he's 6ft tall, easy for him to change the bulbs for me) It's just reminding me that I've got to figure out a new light fixture in the bathroom anyways, when they quit selling incandescent bulbs in 2012. (cant stand fluorescent bulbs...they hurt my optic nerve) I need to figure out something bright enough that wont hurt my eyes. Heck, the strobe light effect that I just had happen in my bathroom made me a bit dizzy. I dont want that happening again.

Hi Erin, sounds like a power surge which blew the bulbs. When you switch anything on ,you get a power surge, eg if you have a 60 watt bulb and the surge goes up to 65 watts the light will likely blow. This only happens in a spilt second.[the surge].However,if you are not happy i advise you to get the electrics checked out. The most common bulb to go is the bathroom one[cos of dampness].At least it does in mine!

There wasnt a surge any where else in the house. Just in the bathroom.
My aunt came over tonight (she lives across the street) and she changed the bulbs for me...which I now feel bad about because she has pneumonia and I wasnt expecting her to climb up on my shower chair to get the light bulb out of that fixture (I didnt have a spare bulb for that one) Scared the crap out of me when she climbed up on that chair. (mostly because she was holding onto my $1500 glass shower door when she did it) At least the fixture above my sink has new bulbs in it...so I can see to pee. ![]() My aunt worries me. She has pneumonia and still insisted on changing all those light bulbs for me, and then when the neighbor's called the fire department tonight (someone fell) she went running up the street to see what happened (I followed slower behind. I wanted to see the fire engine) She's on 80mg of oral prednisone right now. I think that's why she's bouncing off the walls tonight. I would be too. Most oral pred I've ever had was 60mg.

A Surge would be a spike in the Voltage, never the Watts. What it sounds like is a poor/bad connection in the wiring, that is what usually causes flickering. It must be checked by an Electrician since it can heat up and cause a fire. The bad connection will rarely cause the breaker to trip.

I'm planning on a new light fixture for my bathroom, since I dont want to have to stick CFL bulbs in there when they rip our incandescent bulbs away from us in 2012. If I get a new fixture for the bathroom, then I can have everything checked by an electrician while they're installing it.

My b-in-law just replaced the bulb that's in the fixture above the shower. It really pays to have an in-law that's over 6ft tall. (I'm 5 foot 5)

Ou living room has a ceiling fan with 4 small lights around it in the ceiling. I replaced the large can lights with smaller LED lights a few years ago to save energy and make it look better.
Every once in while the lights on the ceiling fan or the fan itself will turn on by itself, or turn faster or slower. Also two of the lights in the ceiling will turn on or off. I know it's an electrical short but I told Laura it was a Ghost, and I named him Sebastian. She is so gullible she believed it for a short while. Now when the fan turns on on it's own, she says "Sebastian stop it!". LOL So, maybe you have a ghost. figure out it's name. I asked an electrician friend of mine if it was a fire hazard and he said no, but wants us to hire him to fix it. that's not a priority.
