I'm working through this sticky and still trying to understand the difference between turmeric and curcumin when I make this purchase.
When they list it below as Turmeric (but with Curcuma in parenthesis), does that refer to the plain turmeric that doesn't have the amount of curcumin we are looking for? Or is that ok? from puritan's pride: Serving Size 1 Capsule Turmeric (Curcuma longa) (root) 450 mg Turmeric Extract (Curcuma longa)(root)(Standardized to contain 95% Curcuminoids) 50 mg compared to from doctor's best: Serving Size: 2 capsules Curcumin Phytosome (Meriva): Phospholipid-Curcuminoids Complex 1000 mg Curcumin and other curcuminoids, minimum 180 mg Thanks so much! Julie

The active ingredient you want is the curcumin. So, look at the amount of curcumin if buying turmeric. Some brands will add a black pepper or piperine to the curcumin that helps with absorption. You need to take about 4 to 5 times as much turmeric than the amount of curcumin wanted. Read the back labels. If the online seller does not show the label in a readable form, there are plenty of online sources that do. I use www.vitacost.com for most of my needs. Their house brand usually has good info.

Is there any chance of a hives reaction to any of these?
Vitamin E 400 IU Niacin 500 mg Mega B-50 I broke out in hives about 30-40 minutes after taking these for the first time yesterday. They are Puritan's Pride brand. I have taken their vitamins for a long time, and I already take a lot of vitamins and supplements. These do have some other ingredients, but not a bunch of extra stuff like artificial colors, soy, gluten, wheat, lactose, etc. I've never had reactions to vitamins before and do not really have food allergies. I also took 1000 mg tablet Curcumin c3 complex Doctor's Best for the first time yesterday, but that was about 8 hours before. There are not many other things that could have caused it, so I feel that it might have been one of these, strange as it seems to me. My whole body was red. I took a benadryl and it calmed down. Thanks for any insight. Julie

If you bought regular niacin... that typically causes a flushing reaction. It can be hivey or itch/sting for quite a while.
It is called the niacin flush. Some people find that an aspirin 1 hr before blocks this response. The other form of niacin called niacinamide does not flush. I cannot say about the curcumin... that brand with the pepper in it might be tough for some people. The new CurcuBrain by NOW has the LongVida licensed brand in it and is very nice (this is new and not as expensive as LongVida was). You can find it on Amazon. It has especially processed curcumin in it for high absorption. Curcumin without special enhancements stays in the GI tract and little gets out. The LongVida type is the type used in the studies. It and CurcuGel (which is not quite a good as the LongVida nanoparticles) were used in the studies because they are absorbed better.

Okay, I'm sure it's the niacin. Whew! Thank you!

Thank you mark for such detailed advice on vitamins. I have recently started taking supplements to improve my level of life. I have suffered from a concussion 2 weeks ago, and now experience many of the PCS, I also believe some of my old symptoms of anxiety, depression, following a traumatic experience have come back.
I was wondering if with all the medicine that I am taking I am not exceeding the limit for dosage for vitamin Bs! I have also in the past suffered from gastritis (intestines problems) and I am worried if too many vitamins might cause it to come back. I have started having burning sensation in my intestines and some pain, but not excruciating. I am currently taking Megatone LA (in one pill): vit C Vit B1 - 3,3mg (300% Daily adviced quantity) (for a Belgian market) Vit B2 - 3,5 mg (250 %) Vit B3 - 40mg (250%) Vit B5 - 15mg (250%) Vit B6 - 4,2 mg (300%) Vit B12 - 2,5 ug (100%) Vit D - 5 ug (100%) Folic acid - 333ug Biotine - 150 ug, (300%) Magnesium - 56,25 mg iron zinc Also: Vit B12 apart - 500ug (1 pill a day) Also: Zaffranax, for anxiety (one pill) I could not find the Turmeric extract, and decided to give this a try. It seems to be working almost immediately, or maybe in combination with all the other vitamins it is effective. But it includes all the Vitamin Bs again! 70 mg saffran (2%) Vit B1 - 0,5 mg (50% Daily adviced quantity) Vit B2 - 0,7 mg (50%) Vit B3 - 8 mg(50%) Vit B6 - 0,7 mg (50%) VIt B8 - 25 ug (50%) Vit B9 - 100 ug (50%) Vit B12 - 1,7 ug (50%) Also magnesium and calcium apart. Please advice, if that is too much! |

The amount of B's in those are quite small. (the European Union does have limits on what you can purchase in Europe with vitamins). I would expect that magnesium is in oxide form, which is useless. Don't expect that to be absorbed at all. It is basically a laxative.

Thanks, for your responce.
So just to clarify. I can definitely take both (Megatone LA) and the Zaffranax (with all its B vitamins) and the magnesium at the same time? Even with all of these is the dosage not enough? or too much? The magnesium is -Meta Relax (folate 100 ug), magnesiumglycerofosfaat 900 mg, magnesiumelement 100 mg, taurine, +vitamins B again!!! - Vitamine B6 - 2mg and vit B12 1,5 ug again!!![/B] Thank you! |
