Does anyone else experience neck pain and stiffness with headaches? This seems to happen often, how can I manage it?

College Student in Information Technology and avid PC Gamer, hit the back of my head against a bunk bed and went unconscious for 3 minutes back in 10-28-2012. Symptoms: Occipital Neuralgia. 2 MRI's and CT normal. Currently going through Paxil withdrawals, and psych has me on L-Theanine, Benadryl for zaps, and Lemon Balm. It has eased it by a bit, so I am continuing the treatment till 1 month from now. Made a 98% recovery on April 8, 2013 with only symptoms of pinched nerves/Occipital Neuralgia in the head and is being treated with injections and physical therapy. Was experiencing: Migraines, Headaches, Nausea and Vomiting, Panic Attacks and Anxiety, Depression, Major Insomnia, Brain Fog, Tinnitus, Lethargy, Loss of appetite, Major Heart Palpitations, Occipital Neuralgia has eased a bit. Vitamins and Medicines: , L-Theanine, Omega 3 Super DHA 900mg, Stress B-Complex Extra Strength, Potassium Gluconate 1000mg, Magnesium Malate 1250mg, Vitamin D3 2000 IU, Methylcobalamin B-12 5000 mcg, Vitamin C 500mg, Lemon Balm. Things that helped me: My Vitamin Regimen, Medication, Earplugs (Love these!), Nature Sounds, Hydrotherapy, Neck Pillow with Heat, Heating Pads, Resting, Being Outside! |

Maybe the nature of my injury but this is TOTALLY me. My neck hurts a whole lot.
I'm having physiotherapy massage and acupuncture twice a week but to be honest I feel like that's causing a decline in my recovery, or maybe it's just bad timing coinciding with other things causing setbacks like the overstimulation of the holidays. The one thing that helps me the most was suggested by Mark, a member here, and that was icing the upper neck regularly. I do it many times a day right now (while off work) for 15 mins at a time, I just lay down with a frozen gel pack on the back of my head sorta behind my ears.

About it: October 26, 2012 I fell backward on an icy parking lot at work. I was on Workers Comp for 9 months. My PCS : everyday headaches became once in a while headaches, and neck pain became manageable. Still have occasional mild dizziness, sometimes fullness in the ears, convergence insufficiency, sequencing struggles, short term memory struggles, verbal processing delays. CT neg, MRI neg. Therapies: prism glasses, acupuncture, icing neck, resting, supplementing, Elavil 20mg at bedtime. NEW: Completed 12 weeks of physical therapy and returned to work full time. About me: I'm a marketing manager, a mom with a blended family and wife to a heart attack survivor. I believe my brain injury taught me more than it cost me. I'm grateful to still be me! |

Thanks for the advice. I can understand the overstimulation of the holidays part. Too much was going on during this time for me. I was in Florida with my grandmother and it was hard being in a noisy environment with the family, plus my cousins always wanted to hang out, but I just couldn't. I felt like I missed out on a lot cause of my injury. It only gets better from here.

I went to a physical therapist for my neck yesterday and it turned out that I have/had three herniated discs in my neck from the injury. He realigned me, did some adjustments, some stretches, and I woke up today feeling amazing. No headache today so far (first day in a while). Might be worth getting it checked out!

Recovered by the end of February. A branch fell on my hardhat at work on 10/7. Not sure if completely concussed but have been feeling "out of it". Definitely injured my upper cervical region and upper back. Out of work for the time being. |

Stiff neck relief for me is massage and ice but It is a temporary relief not long lasting....I was going to look into Botox in neck that my physical therapist was recommending.
Has anyone tried Botox in neck?I hear it helps muscle spasms and headaches too.

MiaVita,
I have had Botox injections for chronic migraines. I have done it twice. If you decide to do it, make sure that it is done by a doctor who does a lot of these and knows what he is doing. It has helped the migraines. I still get them, but not as often, and they are more easily controlled. (Now if all the other PCS symptoms were as easy to control!) The first time he did them, my neurologist injected lots of areas on the face and then he did some injections in the occipital I area (back of head). That was a problem for me. Botox weakens the muscles, and for about two months or so - until it started to wear off - I had trouble with my neck. The muscles were weak, and I almost felt like I needed something to hold my head up. My neck bothered me all the time. When I told my neurologist about it, he didn't seem surprised - which means to me that this is not an isolated incident. So the second time that I had the Botox injections, we did not do the occipital, and the Botox still helps the migraines. And now my neck doesn't bother me. So ask a lot of questions before you make your decision. All the best, ShellyK |

Haven't posted in a long time.
First, thanks to Mark for the tip on combining aspirin and acetaminophen. The other thing that works for me on this stiff neck is applying a Salonpas patch to the center of the spasming neck muscle. Thanks to MrsD on the chronic pain forums for that one. Ice was always problematic for me so that's how I get around the neck stuff. Best to everyone. |
