Default Is anybody out there...I can't fall asleep

Hello! Anyone else awake? It's one of those nights. I can't wake up anyone they have an early morning.

If you're there tell me what you have for dinner and ask me almost anything.

I'm still awake. It's 1:41 am mountain time. Just realized I forgot to take my gabapentin. It helps my mind and body settle down. I'll going to try to get to sleep without it.

Nighty Night

It's frustrating when you wake up and the rest of the house is sleeping. Why can't we sleep, why do we wake up at stupid times! Drives me crazy. I don't know about you but I seem to have lost the skill of drifting off, it's like I have to put myself in a certain frame of mind before I can cross the threshold. Sleeping meds do more harm than good so I've just come off them, not sure they were doing anything anyway. Time, give it time I tell myself...

I do not like being awake when everyone else is sleeping. Such a lonely time. I also do not like sleeping meds. I went years with my thyroid out of whack before a doctor found it.

My sleep was all over the place. He gave me ambien to get on a schedule. What a trip! That stuff is like a hallucinogenic and I was left with no memories if I 'woke up' on it. Nope, nope, nope.

There may be something else out there better. Don't know. My sleep study came back negative for apnea but I do wake up often when I do fall asleep. If it's not better doc wants me to do sleep therapy.

I am a bit cynical about it though. Aren't most TBI patients sleep off the rails. I don't look forward to more therapy and money if this is what my reality is. Everyone in my support group has sleep issues. Some are 10-12 years out with sleep issues still.

I love nights when I fall asleep around 8-9 and wake up by 7.

I don't have trouble falling asleep, but I fall asleep even without the drowsy stage at times. My eyelids just seem to get suddenly heavy and close. Then I fall asleep soon after.

This never happened to me before the injury. It can be frustrating because I can be in the middle of a good movie, or in the company of others, and I just fall asleep, with little to no forewarning. I can sleep as briefly as 5 minutes, or as long as 45 minutes. And it doesn't seem related to specific activities, just a sudden, all out timeout.

I feel somewhat like a narcoleptic I guess. Has anyone else experienced this?

Take care, M-i-m

The Start: MVA, t-boned, on 1-12-14 (my sons 5th birthday) and did not think anything of it.. my back hurt on site but everything else seemed ok. Lost about 10-12 hours from about 3 hours after the accident to the next day...Experienced terrible brain fog for over a month, plus intense headaches, nausea, dizziness, cognitive difficulties, disorientation, no short term memory, depression and just an overall hangover feeling daily.

Current Situation: I'm about 7 months in and my local neurologist has waived her white flag and therefore I am headed to Dallas to be seen (I have family there). The headaches are still daily. I have nausea, dizziness as well.

Drugs I have been on- Vicodin (off), Naproxen (off), proanolol (off), topamax (off), cataflam (off), Midrin (off), Flexeril (off) and now Namenda XR (off), Nortrptylin (off), Verapamil (off)

Therapy- Osteopath, Vestibular and balance therapy, fuzion/soft tissue massage, acupuncture

Drs- ER (no help), GP, Chiropractor, Neurologist and Osteopath

I set my ipad TuneIn radio app to a science show (usually about the brain! Eg. All in the mind from Australia) and set the sleep timer to 15 minutes. Some nights I have to keep resetting the sleep timer, but I will eventually fall asleep to it. Staying asleep is another matter.

I am going to taper off my low does nortryptilene starting tonight because I still get headaches (the reason is was prescribed) and it doesn't seem to help me sleep past 6 am...i go to bed after midnite so that it not good!

What happened: Legs pulled forward by a parent's hockey stick while resting at the side of the rink at a family skate....sent me straight back. I hit the back of my head (with helmet) on the ice, bounced a few times, unconscious for a few minutes. September 11, 2011. Off work since then…I work part-time at home when I can. It has been hell but slowly feeling better (when I am alone☺).

Current symptoms: Vision problems (but 20/20 in each eye alone!) – convergence insufficiency – horizontal and vertical (heterophoria), problems with tracking and saccades, peripheral vision problems, eyes see different colour tints; tinnitus 24/7 both ears; hyperacusis (noise filter gone!), labyrinthian (inner ear) concussion, vestibular dysfunction (dizzy, bedspins, need to look down when walking); partial loss of sense of smell; electric shocks through head when doing too much; headaches; emotional lability; memory blanks; difficulty concentrating. I still can’t go into busy, noisy places. Fatigue. Executive functioning was affected – multi-tasking, planning, motivation. Slight aphasia. Shooting pain up neck and limited mobility at neck. Otherwise lucky!

Current treatments: Vestibular therapy, Vision therapy, amantadine (100 mg a day), acupuncture and physiotherapy for neck, slow return to exercise, magnesium, resveratrol, omega 3 fish oils, vitamins D, B and multi. Optimism and perserverance.
