Oh my goodness, OVER 3 WEEKS WITHOUT THIS COMPUTER.

We just got it tonight. I am posting this in the hopes that it still comes alive tomorow. But I had to share what happened.

It seems that we needed a new mother board (whatever the heck a mother board is). And this comes from China!! I don't know why I thought this would take 3 days but now I know better).

We got more ram also.

Oh, and this is funny. It worked just fine in the computer place. He let us go online, every thing worked fine. We leave the place, I tell Alan: "Wait until I get home, STUFF HAPPENS WHEN YOU BRING THINGS HOME!!"

I re-hook everything up, I bring up the firefox browser and it won't let me go anywhere. I can't connect to the internet.

I then bring up the Internet Explorer Browser and I get the same thing.Then a little window pops up asking me if I want to run a diagnostic on connectivity. I look at Alan and I said "go for it, what do we have to lose"

So I press continue, and it does it's thing, and all of a sudden I get the message

"WE HAVE RESTORED YOUR CONNECTIVITY".

And I was connected.

???????????????????????lol lol lol lol

And I connected my printer, but the screen brought me to the "Connect a printer" thingee, and I inserted the printer cd when it prompted me to do so, but it took so long and it was "searching" or something like that. So I just clicked on Cancel.

Now this is the same printer I had before.

What did I do wrong?

I'll figure it out but if I missed a step I'd like to know it.

Anyway, I really missed all of you.

BUT I GOT MORE RAM SO NOW I'M ZOOMING!!! lol lol

What platform or operating system is your computer? (examples: XP, VISTA, Windows 7?)

I mean the one with the browser "issues," Melody?

I'm having some myself, and mine are related to the diff. between using a shortcut to open up the browser and also whether the browser is 64- or 32-bit, user privileges, etc., and... Windows 7.

Took me a bit of time to "negotiate" the error on mine, and it's still a bit annoying, only I'd rather the error appear briefly and having a fully functional printer.

Are you using a shortcut or the actual app. to open the browser(s)?

P.S.: My printer was a bear to get working again (new computer); I had to download a new driver for Windows 7; still, after that, it depends on the browser's bit whether I can print from the Net. It was trial and error to get the "good" version of MS IE 8 to recognize and work with the printer (from the HD and (x86) instead of the reg. programs folder.

I have a 64 bit, and it has Windows XP. Everything works just fine now. I had Verizon install my Internet Security Suite, and the guy even installed my printer software. He told me to print a test page, and the back of my printer fell off. I never laughed so hard. I popped it back in and told the guy, "never mind", the printer is connected, I'll worry about it later.

Then I went to watch 24 with my husband.

So I am again, back in COMPUTER LAND.

Sounds to me, and I could be wrong, that you may be encountering probs. similar to mine, Melody: compatibility between computer (its "brain" or capabilities) and applications.

I'm glad everything's working for you now; I know how frustrating it was for me, especially knowing all is installed and connected properly. (I did the "test" print, too, and still, darn printer would not do a thing until I opted for a diff. bit browser).

We had a old Lexmark printer (that worked just fine) but it won't work with Win 7. And there is no driver for it on the net anymore. So it is being retired. ( I won't let hubby get rid of it yet since it will work with our XP refurbished laptop I think. Our old HP scanner/printer that we retired is compatible so it is now working with the new Win7 laptop.

I know how you are feeling, as getting our laptop fixed and running the new one has been a huge hassle for us! Hubby just ran his restore discs. We had to use DVD's for the extra space.

You might want to run system restore discs if you don't have them. If your harddrive goes, you'll need them for the system restore.
(I thought back up harddrives saved everything..and that was a huge mistake for us).

Everything works FINE!!! I had no ink in the black printer cartridge

It accepted a command print. I just turned on and then off (the printer I mean). I typed something in wordpad, and I clicked on the print option, and the printer came on, but just started shooting out plain paper. (so I know the printer is connected properly). Then I re-set it one more time, I typed something, I printed it out, The machine acted correctly, but the page came out blank. that's when I checked the printer cardridge.
Okay, one problem solved.

And I really hope I get to come back for the next problem because it's a doozy.

This morning, I get up, walk over to the computer, look down at the modem and the last light (which should be green), is RED. The internet light I mean.

Now I have to tell you that for the last 22 or so days (while the computer was in the shop), I never unplugged or turned off the modem. It still did the 3 green light thing. I simply thought that when I got the computer back, I'd simply plug in the ethernet cable in the back of the computer and it would be connected once again to the modem.

Last night, when I first tried to go online, (read my first post), I got the "error" message using Internet Explorer, so I did the diagnostic thing as I was prompted to do and everything was just fine.

I went to all my favorite sites, I downloaded my anti-spyware thing (which I have been using for 2 years) and I have a lifetime thing. I just had to put in my registration codes. That worked fine. The whole thing worked fine. I shut the computer off and went to bed.

This morning, as I just said, I walked over and saw the red light. I said "hmm, let's do the diagnostic thing once again.

this time I got a notification that it's my modem/router (I don't have a router, just a dsl modem). It prompted me to turn it off for 3 minutes, check everything and turn it back on.

I did as prompted to do, and it took a while but as you can see, I am obviously connected to the internet, I have 4 green lights on my modem, and I'm here on neurotalks.

so what the heck is going on? Is it the fact that I had the modem still going for over 3 weeks, even though it had no computer attached to it?

Do I need to get a new modem? I mean, it's working fine now, (and I don't understand exactly why), but it's getting a signal, and the green lights are there so how come this is happening?

Good Lord, if I have to tell Alan that one more thing is wrong, the guy is going to go nuts. 21 days and no computer, and no email??? He was in withdrawal.

UPDATE, PLEASE READ!!!! As I was hitting the option to send this message, I lost the connection again. No green light. I reduced this browser, opened up Internet Explorer again, and did the diagnostic thing. It restored my connectivity and I knew I could just bring up this page and hit send. It worked.

So what is essentially happening is that there is a glitch in my modem, that it works when it feels like working, and in a blink of an eye, it loses the connection.

Any ideas? Has this ever happened to anyone? If I call Verizon, will they replace the modem or can I go to the store, and buy one myself? I am clueless about modems.

Is there a special one I have to get because I have a HP Pavillion Media center? I really don't know anything about modems.

It's odd that the modem is acting up now... and that you can restore the connection quite easily. even though it's a pain to have to do it.

Makes me wonder if a setting on the computer is causing it to time out?

Do you know if the computer repair guys changed or added any settings?

You might be able to have Verizon test your modem or connections.
a new modem probably has to come from Verizon.

Well, so far, as of last night, everything is nice and green (all four lights), on the modem. No problems like what happened.

I've been on the internet for a while. No problems.

I never thought that they guys could have changed any settings. How do I check to see the settings about the modem?

Any clue?

Do you still have your Verizon modem booklet?
It might have the info you need in it.

or they have this "In home Agent"- I just found it so i haven't tried it.

I would imagine I still have my Verizon booklet. I NEVER THROW OUT ANYTHING.!! lol

As for the in-home agent, I believe this is for Verizon Fios, and I don't have Fios.

I wish I did, I hear it's really fast, but let me tell you, since I added the Ram to my computer, I am flying over the internet. MUCH MUCH DIFFERENT than before.

The guy removed the bottom right icons (I have no idea how they got there), but he said "these are slowing you down, I'll remove them".

And the modem problem thing has vanished. Not to say it won't be back but for now it vanished.

But the funny thing was what happened this morning. We had to go to Alan's doc appointment and I didn't have the time to call up Verizon (this was before the problem seemed to fix itself). This was around 10 a.m.

So I got the modem to work and I'm standing in the front of my house waiting for the Access-a-ride to come, when I notice a Verizon DSL truck across the street. I said to Alan "I don't believe in coincidences, this guy is here doing something and that's why I have a red light from time to time, and then it turns green".

So I'm waiting for the guy to return to his Verizon truck, and when I see him, I go running in the street shouting "Verizon Man, Verizon Man" and he bursts out laughing and I said "May I speak to you about a Verizon matter?"

He was nice, and I told him what happened. He said "Has nothing to do with me, I'm installing a dsl line in that house". Then he said "you know these things happen with modems all the time, you modem might have blown out, it might be a problem with the central office, IT MIGHT BE ANYTHING"

He didn't think it had anything to do with my leaving the modem on for 3 weeks without being connected to my computer. He said "that should not make a difference".

He said "call them up, if it happens again, and they will test your line"

"They will then probably replace your modem". I said "you don't happen to have a modem on your truck do you"? He laughed and said "No we don't carry modems with us".

And since it never happened again, maybe my modem re-set itself?

Will find out when I get up tomorrow morning.

We'll probably be snowed in.

I have been sprouting all night, lol

So it's nice to be back among my computer friends.
