I'm tired so this may be even less coherent than usual.
I forgot to update my Norton and missed 3 described as 'critial', I thought I'd been getting a little more spam lately and things got worse. Not sure what happened but it was bad, my searches kept getting hijacked to porn sites, etc. I installed the updates and ran a full system scan, cleaned (?) registry, and I guess its ok..not getting photos of women in thongs anymore. I don't know if this was mine or security history left over from when my sis had computer, she had to have it cleaned up a couple of times...milworm exploit, web attack firefox interface CVE, SVG mem corrupt code exec, etc. scarey..Or maybe it just blocked those at some point, I don't know, it was 'kidnapping' me when I clicked on a URL and taking me somewhere else and also inserting my search terms into bad sites. OK, I went to the Clean Air site again, right clicked on the guy's email address and looked closer..menu offered 'email to widows live'..clicked on that and it looks like all I have to do is get that for email (hotmail) and it will work? Duh.. I found the Firefox..options..app..etc. progression. The problem was that for some reason the little orange rectangle in the corner that says Firefox had disappeared. I got it back, I have no idea how. ![]() I have another problem. computer has been doing weird things, jumps around when I scroll and line jumps (don't know the right term). I looked at some Firefox things and I think its because I have FF 9 beta..it described the scroll jumps and possibly the other, and said it was "not stable enough for inexperienced users". Gee thanks FF. I think it can be tweaked but it looked hard and I'm annoyed. It said something about just uninstalling it and reinstalling a different version. That looked intimidating as well but will look again and see if I can figure out enough to ask questions. I had one that did well, don't know if it was 7 or 8 and I have to be sure its compatible with Norton. Very dumb question..I installed Norton update and it said installed and 'processed'. When I started scan it began with 'checking for updates' and it ran for a minute before I canceled it. I didn't accidentally cancel the ones I had just installed did I? Icehouse, how is your tolerance for frustration? haha I have cheesy peoplepc dial up, that was the email Facebook rejected. May not be fast enough, I don't know. Thanks, Judi |

Norton should have settings somewhere in it for automatic updates, it must be turned off on yours for some reason.
Usually would be found in sections labelled - options, preferences, settings I'd locate that and set it to auto update. It should have settings for a scan schedule, maybe you need to find those and set it more often and/or a more in depth scan. go to the Norton website if you need details on use & settings, I haven't used it so can't help much. http://us.norton.com/support/ My Zone Alarm is set to update every hour, and is set to quick scan every 3 days, normal scan biweekly, deep scan 6 months. Regular FF is up to 10.0.2 now, but I stopped mine at 9.01 for awhile since the quick & often FF releases get ahead of the Zone Alarm security engine. does the computer only jump around and act weird when using FF? test it with IE to see if it still happens also use some other program on the computer to see if it happens then also. sometimes the mouse gets dirty underneath and a cleaning fixes the problem if it is mouse related. If you click the Help button at the top of FF and go down to About Firefox - that will tell you the version you have and there is a button to check for updates, might be worth a try. The updates you installed on Norton should be fine if it was all done and processed - it might be set to check for updates before doing a scan, so that was why it tried checked for updates again.

just found this - Check to see if you have it already or not.
Enable the Norton Toolbar plug-in in Firefox Start Firefox. Click Tools > Add-ons. On the Extensions tab, click Norton Toolbar. If Norton Toolbar is grayed out, click Enable. Click Restart Firefox. more info- https://www-secure.symantec.com/nort...eb&pvid=f-home

I clicked on "About Firefox" and it just started updating, I now have FF 12 beta 'Aurora'. It seems to work a lot better so far but I wish I could get off the Beta thing, I clicked on an offered update for that once before I knew what it was and now that's all I get. aagghh! I don't think its jumping around as much but have not used it much yet.
THEN, it always says it is not compatible with Norton 3.0 and that makes me paranoid so I looked at Norton and I guess its ok with 360 but....Norton has a place for 'my network' and I clicked on that and it said I needed product configuration...is that with the new FF? " "Initialize a network component in order to complete your request." I tried to look up definition and it said something about operating, loads files, drivers, etc., sounds important...? Should I do that? Will something deteriorate if I don't? I haven't had a Norton tool bar for the last few updates. I will try that when I get over this trauma. I get very disgusted with the incompatibility between Norton and FF but decided to keep Norton at least until I take it in for service and someone else can make the changes. I vaguely understand Norton and it seems to do a good job when I don't miss updates. I'm not sure if it would work on automatic update with my slow dial up but what do I know. Thanks, Judi |

I hate Norton....they put their sticky fingers in everything and make a mess, but that's just my humble opinion. Maybe I just like being in control. Could be a guy thing.

No I don't like Norton either, it came on my parents computer a couple years ago and I gave it a try
![]() I had a 3 pc registration for ZA so used the 3rd install on their machine and totally removed Norton. zy- If you have a paid for Norton program - I'd use it till it expires unless you find something better. So look around and or try other name brands as trials to see what you prefer. *But if you aren't an admin on the computer I guess you are limited as to what you can do/change on it.. ![]() Do you have the Window install CD for it available?

No one who knows anything seems to like Norton, I probably wouldn't either if I knew what I was doing. I might try to get rid of it if I gain a little more confidence. I'm not very fast because of my disability, I get tired, but I am learning and appreciate the help. Haven't done it yet but will change default email (yay!) and get Norton toolbar back. Do the free virus programs also offer spam control or would I need to get that somewhere else?
What I really want to do is get rid of FF beta and get 9.1. I'm finally able to find things semi reliably (sometimes.. ![]() No window install CD, I might be able to borrow one, would that work? would I still get updates? I think its a great mystery that they find me. Icehouse, telephone help won't work because of the dial up, I might PM some time, I just figured out how.l ![]() Judi |

I took the HP games off my new laptop, don't want them at all.
Ughh yes some brands really add a lot of bloat onto their machines... ![]() Might be best to NOT mess with a reinstall of xp & not needed if you can log on as sister. So it's a HP, has anyone made any recovery disks? there is a program and a place on the hard drive that has the recov info and the pgm will help you put it on a cd or USB, in case it is ever needed. A good thing to do. HP website will have more info on how to do it.

I'm trying to sign up for hotmail and can't even do that very well.. I have a hard time reading the scrambled letters sometimes and then it froze up. ![]() The #@$%& Firefox is trying to update already again, can't those little computer designer guys get dates or something?! Recovery discs? Oh. Thanks Judi |
