Default Vitamin C and Toothache

Hi, Has anyone else had experience
with toothache and Vitamin C?

I got a horrible toothache the other day.
There was a lot of stress and my tooth began to hurt until it was just completely awful.

I don't take Ibuprofen any more, since the Periodontist pointed out that it can weaken bone around implants. I have some old dental implants.

So I took a Serrapeptase, which actually worked better than I expected, though it by no means totally got rid of the pain.

By the time the pain had gotten so bad I was holding my head in my hands and moaning, it was too late to take very much vitamin C, due to its tendency to increase bathroom visits, and I wanted to sleep. I longed to sleep.

Next day I was determined to take 60 of the 500mg vitamin C. (I'm very tall and very heavy, so this amount might not be good for someone else who is not the same as me.)

I took 15 of the 500mg vitamin C with a few crackers and my breakfast coffee complete with amino acid powder.

I gritted my teeth as there was little improvement as the hours passed.

Mid morning I took another 15 of the 500mg vitamin C with coffee and amino acids, but this time I also took my supplements, which include CoQ10 which someone suggested to me and which I read about and it is indeed suggested for teeth problems.

In a couple of hours it seemed like there was a little less pain.
(Or else I was just so wishing that were true.)

Mid afternoon I had 8 more of the 500 mg vitamin C with coffee and supplements as above.

Then two hours later I dad some chili for dinner with 15 more of the 500mg vitamin C, and water. A lot of water.

Then a couple hours later I had the last 8 of the 500 mg vitamin C...

and by now there was a distinct improvement, though the pain was not gone.

I was trusting that a second day would do the trick and was prepared to go with the same program today.

Quite late, maybe 10pm or so, I felt a huge bump on my right hand upper gum... so I put hot salt water in my mouth for about an hour... it wasn't hot for the second half hour.

That didn't make as much difference as I'd hoped.

When I laid down to go to sleep, with the lights off, I suddenly heard this sound like a drain gurgling... but not as loud as if it were a bathroom sound.
It went on for maybe a few minutes, and then when I ran my tongue over the very large bump, it wasn't as large any more.

So I was delighted, of course.

Today the toothache is gone. GONE!!!!!!

I had a similar experience with an even worse toothache in 2005. That time the toothache was so bad it made me scream a couple of times.

I don't know if you've read the studies from Bangladesh on vitamin C, but it is potent.

It is certainly not for daily use in such large amounts.

But when there is a serious problem, like a serious infection, it is a potent and life saving thing.

I have read some accounts which suggest that it would be life saving if the Avian Flu hit.

I therefore keep several bottles on hand.

Have you ever had a good experience with a large dose of vitamin C?

Exclamation With all due respect, Karen...

Your experience is rather frightening.

Abscessed teeth can send bacteria thru the body (via the lymph system) to cause bacterial endocarditis, appendicitis or other infections of a very
serious nature. You were lucky that your abscess burst, drained itself.
But I would not assume it is cured. And you swallowed that drainage?
Some bacteria may remain in there and travel to the bone of your jaw. If this happens even antibiotics may not cure it. Bone infections do not respond
to antibiotics well. Upper teeth abscesses may pierce the sinus membrane and drain thru the maxillary sinus and give a false sense of "cure"..in reality the infection is moving thru your whole body. If in the lower jaw, it can move to the bone and once there cause necrosis.

Not everyone can handle 30 grams of Vitamin C in one day.
People with poor kidney functions would not be able to handle this dose.
And many people do not know what their kidney function level is in reality.
As we age most kidney functions decrease. Many people are walking around with 1/2 function (or less) with no symptoms at all.

I have to say, with all due respect that anyone with an abscess should seek
dental help ASAP. Please do not self medicate one.

Hi ConsiderThis!

I am soooo glad your toothache is gone!! I know how painful they can be!
I found it curious that Vit. C helped you so much. I have Glaucoma and my Optomologist, told me to take 1000 mgs. a day of Vit.C because he said they have done studies over in Africa where Glaucoma is huge, and that large doses of Vit.C helped Glaucoma.
Sounds like Vit.C is a vitamin we all should be taking!!
Hugs,
Linda

Shocked an abscessed tooth for sure

I wholeheartedly agree with MrsD. What you have experienced is an tooth cavity going so deep that the dental pulp (that soft part far inside) became infected --- the pain was the expanding mass of pus pressing against and destroying the nerve at the root of the tooth. The infection will totally kill this nerve and you will probably loose the tooth now in the coming weeks or month ..... unless you have a root canal done and have a crown put on. Expensive. My mother's last crown alone cost her $1800.

The only other way to cure the infection is tho have the tooth pulled (cheap at dental schools, across the border, or with some dentists - call around for prices). The dentist will pack the cavity with medicine and give you oral antibiotics for ten days to kill the bacteria. Like MrsD said, now the bacteria are no longer in your tooth, but in your bone, and also circulating thru-out your body via your blood stream. This type of situation (bacteria in the bloodstream) is one of the biggest known contributors to hardening of the arteries. Puffy easily bleeding gums, an infection called pyorrhea, does the same thing - putting bacteria into the blood stream. .

What happened is that the pus amount grew rapidly, a very active infection, and pushed out past the part of the tooth buried deep in the bone -- this is possible because the infection destroys a part of the bone, loosening the tooth. The expanding mixture of pus took the path of least resistance --- and that was outward thru the soft tissues of the gum line which caused more pain. The infection ate thru the flesh and eventually it broke down the gum, creating a hole and the pus flowed out.

This does not mean the infection is gone. It will continue until you have it treated. Untreated, it can go on for years, with repeated boils developing that eventually break thru -- or sometimes the infection can begin to ooze down between the tooth and the bone, into the gum, flowing out thru that space. The infection can spread to other teeth or, as MrsD said, go up into your sinuses --- and I even know one person who had the infection erode into his brain case. His breath actually became foul, with the smell of rot, but he couldn't smell it himself. He ended up in the hospital and nearly died on a brain infection.

Please do not delay seeking dental attention, even if you can't afford more than an extraction and treatment to treat the infection.

Please take care of this infection.

Teri

Lightbulb why the pain stopped

Hi, Boopers ....

The vitamin C had nothing to do with stopping this pain. The intensity and nature of the pain changes as the infections breaks out of the tooth root, forces itself outward, against the bone and the rest of the nerve, then begins to make its way out into the gum.

The pain disappeared not because of the Vit C she took or the salt water she held in her mouth. The pus pocket would eventually find some way of breaking out. The pain stopped because the the pressure stopped when the pus could flow out and stop pressing against the nerves.

Heart Vitamin C

Wow, I just found an article from a couple years ago on gum disease and Alzheimer's Disease.

I am beginning to think that the ongoing tooth pain which caused me to take the vitamin C, which so immensely helped my tooth ache and reduced the swelling, has probably helped me not become a complete babbling idiot.

(though... there are those who probably disbelieve in B12 and think I am a babbling idiot).

I have to go do some legal things.

then I'll look for the article again, and possibly post it.

Hi, it didn't burst in my mouth or anything. It continued to feel as if it was deep under the gum/skin.

I didn't swallow anything because there was nothing to swallow.

According to the Periodontist, the old type of dental implants I have are bumpy surfaced and they encourage infection. I have an infection in my bone around them, and that will be removed surgically and a graft put in. That's scheduled for next month.

Yes, I think I've had these infections for a long time, and I think that's why I continued to have a faint reddish line under my thumb nail on my right hand, even after huge amounts of Metronidazol.

I think it's lucky I read the article about vitamin C saving people with tetanus in Bangladesh... because I kept taking vitamin C.

Only then my skin was getting ... almost like a hard surface, so I thought it was the vitamin C.

Now that I've stopped taking the Ibuprofen in such huge amounts (I've in fact stopped taking it at all) my skin is going back to normal...

Oh, yes, I totally agree that 30 grams of vitamin C may be way too much for many people. Yes.

I'm really tall and also quite fat right now. (Not being able to move does not help in losing weight.)

I had been taking maybe 20 or 24 grams a day, and it sort of kept it under control. But the 30 grams gave a more complete result.

The thing is that I keep having these weird ... not sure what to call them ... things on my left hand. First there was one and I put alcohol on it a lot and it finally reduced to not much. Then one day there was a tiny scrape like thing that appeared, maybe around a quarter of an inch. But it got worse and looked like it was getting infected, the red raised ring thing around it.

So I went with alcohol again, and vitamin C and it reduced. But last night I was stressed, I forget why, and it got all red again.

So I think that must be related to the infection.

And that probably also explains why I'm still losing hair. (I lost a lot of hair while I was living in the hydrogen sulfide.)

Vitamin C is apparently as potent as antibiotics.

I think that if I'd understood it, I could have killed the clostridia with it. But the 20 grams wasn't enough in a body as large as mine.

Well, thank you for writing.

I just realized that you jumped to the conclusion it was an abscess.

I don't know that it was an abscess. It wasn't like things dentists have called abscesses in the past.

It was a raised bump on my upper right hand gum.

Much like the bumps on my neck, which the Periodontist asked about in relation to the bone infection around my old dental implants.

though... this is what my American Heritage defines abscess as:
