Default New member, SFN

Hi, I am a new member to this board. I have been diagnosed with ideopathic SFN after about 1 1/2 years of burning, stabbing, electric shock "explosions" in my feet. I have been pre-diabetic but not diabetic for a couple of years. My dr told me I had a B12 deficiency about a year and a half ago but I have been taking supplements and am no longer deficient. I have been on Gabapentin for about 6 months but have gained about 25 pounds and am now getting awful acid reflux that I never had before. Now it will wake me up in the middle of a sound sleep with the feeling that I am going to throw up. I am thinking of stopping the Gabapentin because the nausea and acid reflux is continuing throughout the day. I can't afford to gain any more weight either. My dr. gave me a prescription to Lyrica, but after researching the side effects of that drug I don't want to take it either. I am very leery of drugs now because I was on Paxil for about 10 years for depression and wonder if this neuropathy might be from the long term use of that drug. I also took Naproxen for the neuropathy but it cause my feet to swell up so much I couldn't get my shoes on. The Gabapentin, 300 mg 3x day, is helping but the pain is still there.

Hello onebeed,

Welcome to the NeuroTalk Support Groups!

I see you've found the PN forum so I'm sure that the members there will be able to offer you information and support.

If you need to find specific information about the medications you've been taking then you can always do a forum search. You can search just the PN forum or you can search forum wide.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/search.php

A temporary measure for helping with the reflux at night is to sleep with the top of your bed raised. That's a very unpleasant side effect you're having. I know there are many members here who have taken or are taking Gabapentin, so hopefully you'll find some information about that from then.

Regarding your B12 levels. Did the doctor say what it was?
Doctors I've come in contact with are still are working on antiquated measurements unfortunately so it would be interesting to know what your level is now.

all the best.

I don't remember what my B12 levels were. I will have to find that out. My neurologist told me the last time I was there that the levels are now above normal limits so he cut the amount of the methylcobalamin I was taking in half.

Default Thanks!

Thanks! I am so glad I found this forum. After perusing some of the other posts, I discovered that the reason I was getting the horrible acid reflux and nausea was from the R-Lipoic acid and not the gabapentin! So I stopped the R-Lipoic acid and the reflux has gone away. I am taking alpha lipoic acid and it does not cause the acid reflux. I never had this problem before.

Default My B12 levels

Hi, I got my B12 levels. They were 270, which I guess were within normal levels. They are now 1580.

Well done. 1580 is a heck of a lot better than 270!!

Hi onebeed

Welcome to NT
Re your B12 levels - did you stop taking the methylcobalamin (and any multivitamin with B12 in it) for about a week before having the blood test done? The high level on your second test could be a false reading due to elevated levels in the blood.

More info available on the B12 sticky at:

Hmm, no I didn't stop taking the B12. I didn't know you were supposed to do that.
