Hi All,
In my previous post, i am concerned about having neck RSD resulted from an auto accident. My neck MRI revealed some cysts and nodules in my thyroid and my doctor suggested biopsy for two big nodules to rule out cancer. The biopsy involve 3 tiny needle sticks on each side of my neck. I am worried about this procedure that may caused additional flare or spread in my neck. Have someone done this procedure in the past? What was your experience and did it cause your RSD flare or spread? Is there any thing i can do or ask the doc to do to prevent the RSD flare or spread? I am so afraid to even consider this procedure as my RSD tend to spread easily. However, on the other hand, should i risk ignoring it and just have the cancer grow if it is cancer so that i can die and not having to deal with RSD anymore. I would like to hear your thoughts on this and thanks for reading my post.. Numb |

First, off, Nice to meet cha!
Second, I AM NOT A DOCTOR! I think you need to consult with s/he, and find out what the odds are for what. Now, my humble Opinion.... Yes, you may open the door for more RSD, but, if the anesthesiologist, is aware of RSD, S/He, can take some steps to avoid spread. Do you have any history of Cancer? I'd be Afraid of that! RSD can change your comfort in life. Cancer, can END your life! Don't mess around. Get done what needs to be done, and simply try to keep a strong upper lip, easier said that done, I know... Talk to your doctors, ALL of them including who's treating your RSD, the Surgeon, and, the Anesthesiologist! Get your self into a comfort zone. I pray that all goes well for you, Numb. First, I am sorry to hear of your additional health concerns. As if RSD isn't enough to deal with!
I can relate two experiences in regards to needles. Recently I had botox injections in my neck and my skull in an attempt to allievate pain in those areas. The botox didn't really do anything, and the procedure it self caused a flare. More invasively, I had a diagnostic LP done a year ago, which caused a massive spread which is still with me. That said, I would say it's a no brainer that when you are dealing with the potential of cancer, you simply must have these procedures done. There is a chance that nothing negative will result from the procedure, and a flare, while awful, is still just temporary. And a spread is, well, a spread, which would suck. Make sure your doctors are using 27 gauge needles. The lower the number, the more likely of something negative being the result. Good luck. -- Dennis |

Hi All,
May i try to explain why i am so afraid of the needle and concern about the possible spread of RSD? I contracted RSD through an IV needle stick during one of my nerve blocks for my chronic pelvic pain (pudendal nerve entragement). A very painful condition makes me disabled and unable to sit at any length w/o pain. With that said, i am dealing with two incurable condition, that is the reason why i would rather die sometimes or find an excuse to die. However, God had been gracious so far helping me to go through each day. I am still working part time with these two horrific condition. I will speak to my anestheologist regarding the prevention of the spread. Thanks for the good advice, Numb |

I have a mirror image of your experience. Both internist recommended follow up ultrasound, neither recommended needle aspiration. Both said they are extremely common in my age group (53).
Your doc(s) are ulimately responsible and know your condition so follow their advise but I would at least see an endocrinologist for second opinion! |
