Hi Kathy,

I have horrible jaw pain too so I totally get where you are coming from with the soft food. If you don't already do this you might consider trying to keep the tip of your tongue on the the roof of your mouth just behind your upper teeth. It helps to keep the teeth apart and stop you from clenching which I'm famous for.

I was diagnosed with TMJ, Temporomandibular joint disorder many years ago, but the pain increased substantially since I got RSD.

Apparently there are a few drugs that are prescribed for RSD that are known to cause jaw pain but I don't recall which ones they are right now. You might check with your doctor to review your meds for that.

A few weeks ago I went and had botox injections given to me in both jaws. Since it was my fist time having something like this done the doctor just gave me only a small amount. I am going to go back next week and I'll ask her to increase the dosage for my next treatment. After I had it done I was shaking my head asking myself why I didn't have it done sooner.

Warm wishes,

MsL

Kathy, Possibly you could try a bite splint, especially at night. They make these so they are OTC now. I have used one for many years with a lot of relief, it has become kind of a baby blanket for me. I hope you find a solution soon, a body can only take so much soft food!! Best wishes, Lisa

Raises hand..me me me.

And I am in the middle of dental work as well. Was having dental implants done and had to stop for a year because of all the pain from my shoulder and resulting RSD dx.

But have to fnish the work. Last week I went for a cleaning and it flared me. And then I was too flared to have the oral surgery so my dentist actually did arthocentisis where he flushed the jaw joints to help with the inflammation.

I agree that a night splint might help and soft foods! My oral surgoen also gave me some exercises to do and is recommending TMD physical threapy.

I empathesize with your jaw pain.

Hi Kathy, So sorry you are having this issue. I attended some Biofeedback classes and I remember one hint that helped me relax my jaw was to put my lips together. When they are together. the back teeth are separated, thus less biting or pressure on teeth.
When I go to dentist, he always orders antibiotics to prevent infection.
Let us know how you are progressing. Your friend, loretta

I woke up so many times with my teeth and jaw clenched where my jaw would be sore. My dentist thought I was grinding my teeth but he saw no indication of teeth wearing. He made a top splint for me and it helps immensely. He just told me not to wear it all the time. At the time my dentist, nor I, knew I had RSD in my face.

Good luck to you.

Mycah..

Do you have RSD in your face also?? Have you ever or anyone here ever had an xray of your teeth or jaw that experiences the pain?? I am interested what/if it revealed a "halo" in the nerve bed... My jaw tightening, I do when I am awake too as it is the intense pain causing me to do that.. I am sure..even my tongue hurts and the pain travels to half of my lower jaw..deep sharp pain.

Loretta..thank you my friend..I also take antibiotics as I have a heart issue that requires it..I have been looking into this jaw pain for awhile and seems my endo. says no infection..due to the nasty pain that has migrated to half of my lower jaw..seems he is sure it is RSD. UGHx2!

Hugz, kathy

Yes Kathy I do have RSD in my face. I haven't had an xray done of jaw or teeth to look for anything but cavities.

About six months ago I was being treated for hemicrania continua because one side of my head/ear/face/lower jaw hurt and was very sensitive. Had a droopy eye too. Indocin didn't work so then they thought I had trigeminal neuralgia and put me on Trileptal. Then the pain/sensitivity spread to just the other side of my face. Trileptal helped but could NOT stand the horrible side effects so I took myself off of it. Have had one occurrence since.

I also have the jaw tightening when awake but that usually happens when I'm stressed.

I've only been diagnosed with RSD since April 1 but feel I've had it for a couple of years.

All the best,
Nancy
