Sox -- yes please!

soxmom 01-11-2010 04:13 PM

Kel and Barb...do either of you know how to make fried chicken?

Debbie D 01-11-2010 05:31 PM

Good afternoon, everybody! Whew...busy day. Errands to run, work out, and then a bit of post-Christmas cleaning has me pooped!
Sandy, that cabin is gorgeous!!I might load the pics into my computer for later reference in case we ever remodel the in laws' cabin...you all can have a huge get together of your friends in that thing (hint hint;)).
Barb, sorry you're feeling lowly...:hug:

I'm reading a book about how to talk to seniors, and it has given me a different perspective on my inlaws...helps me to 'walk in their shoes', so to speak. I look forward to reading the other two books I have on hand. I hope it can give me some patience and a better ability to communicate with them. They've been so wonderful to me my whole life...:)

I sure look forward to the January thaw coming!! wheee-hooo! I'm plum tired of this cold...:mad:

Well, hope all of you have a wonderful evening...stay safe!:)

I do! I do! I haven't made it in quite a while, though.

I tend to like boneless chicken.....really don't like any type of meat with bones in it.

barb02 01-11-2010 07:40 PM

Sox -- Have you been spying on me in the kitchen?:D I have made fried chicken once or twice but not for a long time. -- a really long time. Like Kelly, I use boneless chicken breasts with no skin. I usually bake it or grill it although occasionally I will saute it in olive oil. Saute sounds so much healthier than fried.:rolleyes: I should have known that chicken at Planet Hollywood was fried; it was so good.

tkrik 01-12-2010 07:56 AM

Good morning everyone! I woke up early, 5:00, and couldn't go back to sleep. UGH! Just putter around my house this morning. . . waiting for my yoga show to come on so I can do my yoga this morning.

Kelly, Barb, & Sox - I haven't made fried chicken in over 20 years! Like Barb, I do "saute" it in olive oil occasionally. It's not the same thing as deep fried chicken though. Most of the time I either bake it or buy it already cooked (when it's on sale). I also buy turkey breast already cooked and have been freezing portions of it. Since it is only me, I don't need the whole thing.

Debbie - I am glad you are finding the book helpful. Often, we need to take a step back and work on getting a different perspective, such as you are by reading the book. You are such a good DIL to take the time to do this as well as help them out.:hug:

Sandy - I thought you were moving here! :D There are ways to get rid of the scorpions. I haven't seen one in years.

Pam - I haven't sewn anything in years. In college, during summer break, I would sew a lot of my clothes as it was cheaper than buying them. A few months ago, DBF's neighbor across the street gave me a really nice industrial sewing machine that she didn't want anymore. I really need to put it to use and was thinking about it the other day. PJ pants are easy and would be a good start. Let us know how it goes.

Hi everyone else! Hope you all have a great day today!:hug:

barb02 01-12-2010 08:15 AM

I also could not sleep last nihgt so I finally gave up and got up awhile ago. I just have one class this morning (Congress) and then a dentist appointment this afternoon. So that is my exciting life. Temp's are supposed to be gradually increasing. Yeah! Maybe some of this snow and ice will melt!

sabimax 01-12-2010 08:32 AM

Hey all,
Just busy! as always lol

Pam, your hubby migranes are from food allergies?? wow. Yes the neuro mentioned some migranes are without headaches and start with dots or some sort in vision. He gave me some samples of a migrane med. he wanted me to take the minute that eye blurs out and I feel off... but right away, he said if I feel any better difference this is probably migrane. But no such luck tried it with the last two spells... and no different/ my eyes just want to shut, my balance is way off, my mind is gone... just not there when this occurs at all.

My boss, has known about two times now that happened at work and concerned in the way if I can not find coverage as it happens all so fast...he would not want me to work with it, but can not leave store without coverage either.....

Thinking about it, I was having troubles few days before it, with balance and the stiffness worse and such... who knows... wish the doctors would know something!!

SAndy that cabin... or lets say log house is wonderful!! oh that is a great idea for the anniversary/honeymoon woohoooooo

Barb thanks for the note

hugss to all... hoping all start feeling better, I am in much the same boat as many ... fighting the pain of stiffness!! but keep smiling all, hugsss, sarah

oh make you giggle maybe,...

yesterday I was hear at puter, which is in kitchen... I had given Ciara and Maddie peanut butter sandwiches... at the counter... their was crayons near by.... and they seemed quiet while eating... I turn to look they have at least 15-20 crayons sticking into Maddies half sandwich... I was like hey what are you two doing? Ciara says, "Maddie did it" haha new creation PB and Crayon sandwiches!!

soxmom 01-12-2010 08:47 AM

Kel and Barb...

You make it just like fried chicken but with boneless tenders or boneless
breasts, cut up in strips.

First ~season flour with garlic powder, salt and pepper

then~ beat one egg with a cup of milk

next~ for the breading you need 2 1/2 crushed fine Captn Crunch(measure
after you crush) and 1 cup of crushed corn flakes. This will coat one and
a half pounds of chicken/tenders. I usually at least triple it for my crew!

Thats it! dip in flour, then eggwash then Captn Crunch/corn flake mixture.
Fry as you would fry chicken.

We serve it with bbq sauce or honey mustard.

Enjoy!:D

Kitty 01-12-2010 09:18 AM

Thanks Sox! I'll try it next time both boys are home to eat. It sounds really good. I used to have a deep fryer....one of those things with the basket that you just put the food in and submerge it into the oil. I don't know what happened to it but I don't have it anymore. I hardly ever fry anything but this recipe sounds really good. Sounds like it would be good baked, too.

Sarah, PB&C sandwiches?! :D Kids are so funny. I remember once when my oldest DS was almost 2 he got into the refrigerator and unwrapped several slices of cheese and stuck them to the refrigerator door! I couldn't get mad at him.....it was just too cute and he wasn't doing it to be naughty. He did get upset when I took them off, tho.....just couldn't understand why we couldn't leave them there!

Well, we're finally seeing the light at the end of this c-o-l-d tunnel we've been in. The temps are supposed to get into the 50's by the end of the week but a cold, rainy weekend is in the forecast. Back to the 40's this weekend but at least it will be rain....not ice or snow.

There are several counties where schools are still closed here in GA. It's mostly NW Georgia counties but the next county just North of us is still closed. Southerners definitely cannot drive in the slick stuff.

There was a tragic accident about 10 miles North of me. Three teenaged boys were walking on a frozen pond and the ice gave way and they all fell in. Only one was able to escape....the other 2 died. It was so sad.

Not doing much today. I didn't sleep all that well last night so I hope I can manage to get a nap in. My phone rang constantly yesterday it seemed. Good thing I wasn't trying to sleep then!

:grouphug: to everyone!

FinLady 01-12-2010 09:44 AM

Sox, thanks for the recipe. Pretty cool!

Sarah, :hug::hug:

Debbie, that is neat that you found something to help you understand the in-laws more.

Kelly, prayers going out for their families

~~~~~~~
Morning all! Sitting here trying to plan my day.
The meatballs were great! Hubby couldn't believe they worked out, but I think I know the leftovers are going to be part of lunch. :) Definitely different than the italian meatballs I make. Of course the biggest problem with the way most of my grandmother's recipes is lots of butter.
Take care everyone and stay safe! :grouphug::grouphug:
Vonn07 01-12-2010 10:15 AM
mmmm .. fried chicken ... thx, Sox!
Sandy - sorry about everything you are going thru .. when you decide to move - do it for YOU ...
nothing new here - just getting some quilts out the door .. suppose to be in the 30s .. heat wave!! I love it!!
hey Jenn - working on anymore paintings??
Trish - did you get your DD moved??
Sarah - Maddie must have a bit of an artist in her .. expressionist, maybe??
Barb - hope you are feeling better ... and Congress class is fun!
Soxmom - thinking about opening baseball season!!
Debbie - if you leave something up from the Christmas decorations all year - you'll have an early start next Christmas!! okay - I tried! :p
have a great day!!
TwoKidsTwoCats 01-12-2010 11:18 AM
Sarah, my hubby tried a couple of the migraine medications and they did not help him at all. Now if he gets the visual cue that one is coming on, he drinks a Mountain Dew for the caffeine, takes Excedrine migraine tablets and puts a heating pad across his forehead. If he can get all that done quickly enough he avoids the nausea, dizzy spell and the headache. But the fatique seems to happen no matter what...he just gets that overwhelming need to sleep.
We figured out the food sensitivity thing when we saw a doctor on a news show mentioning a compound called Tyramine that is naturally in foods. Too much Tyramine can cause migraines in some people. We started researching and found that he was consuming a good amount of foods that contained this. Once he cut those out or limited the amount he ate, his migraines lessened. He got lazy during Christmas and ate too much chocolate... yep a few days later he had a migraine. Do a internet search on Tyramine. There are several good articles about it and how it can trigger migraines for some people.
Your spasticity and body aches...that sounds like something totally different. I bet you are dealing with several medical issues that they just can't pin down. :hug:
SandyC 01-12-2010 11:34 AM
Morning all! We had mom buy herself a recliner and laptop so she can have something to do on days we are stuck in this house. She seems excited. I'll have to teach her how to use it but that should be OK. She has used a desktop before. I know she'll forget some things but at least she can play games, watch movies and talk to her family on FB.
We're going out Thursday for Jim's eval on an exercise machine and to pick up his wheelchair. Mom will go with us since the weather is going to be 35. We can't see leaving her at home when we're having good weather. Gotta take it when it comes! She'll be stuck in the back of the van on the way home because we'll have two wheelchairs but it's a small price to pay to get out. haha
Nothing planned for today except laundry. :hug: to everyone.
TwoKidsTwoCats 01-12-2010 11:43 AM
Top Secret Recipes site also has that recipe! I tried it several years ago and baked it instead of frying. I had forgotten about it and need to try it again. :)
We are coming out of the deep freeze too. It was only 26 this morning. Lots of frozen and burst pipes in the area..so plumbers are super busy these days! Luckily all of ours are next to air ducts in the crawlspace.
LOL..crayons in the PBJ... too cute! My youngest once colored the stairway in a rental house...a PBJ would have been preferred!!
My Christmas tree is still standing... we usually take it down by the 15th..guess I better get busy on that! DH stacked the storage boxes next to the tree...so no excuse. :o
:grouphug: I see a nap in my near future. I had insomnia last night too.
Not yet. Finally getting some new ideas though. Now that the pain I was in is more manageable, I'll be getting there soon. :)
Resting from my yoga/stretch work out. Hoping I can get a project started this afternoon. :)
Debbie D 01-12-2010 02:36 PM
Good afternoon, all...
warming up here, too, but I'm cold as ice...been having internal thermostat problems the last few days...
just kind of puttering around after working out...don't really want to do much of anything today.
I have to see the pcp tomorrow. I had blood tests last Friday, and my cholesterol is still high, esp the LDL:( So she wants me to come in to see if we can figure out what to do, since I get such bad muscle reactions to statins like lipitor, vitorin, crestor, etc. I'm on Lescol and Zetia right now, and I've been eating good foods, only 2 small dark chocolate every day for dessert, and working out, yet still get a bad number. Curses to heredity!!
I also am going to have a lump in my lower abdomen checked...noticed it about a week ago as I was walkiing up the stairs. Doesn't hurt...it's probably a hernia. I've had really bad hernias repaired in the past...resulted from 4 babies between 9-10.4 lbs:eek:. But since my maternal grandma died from ovarian cancer, I thought it would be a good idea just to get it checked at the same appt as the lecture about cholesterol.
Anyway, I hope all of you down south get out of the freezer soon...hate to see you suffer...esp when there's sad news about people falling through ice and dying:(:(
Have a good one, all...:)
SandyC 01-12-2010 03:00 PM
Debbie, I got my book and it is one of the best I have ever read. It has a check off list of all the things parents may do or say and each chapter is dedicated to that particular section. I think this may be the book I've been needing. I read the book's objective to Jim last night and he said "They must know your mom." LOL
Chris just took mom with him to do some shopping for me. I am doing laundry and enjoying the time alone. It's like old times!
Vonn07 01-12-2010 03:01 PM
hey Jenn-girl ... take a ride over to the mall or shopping center - and check out the spring clothes for teens (like Maurices and Macy's : the higher end stores) ... and the 'new' fad is psychedelic ... and abstract!! it's like a flash-back to the 70s ...
Sandy - I have a 97 year old aunt that loves her laptop .. and plays solitare and emails me yet ... I picked up a $10 Scrabble game at Staples/office depot ... and you play with 'Mavis' the computer ... it's fun!
Pam - I take it that you don't like the cold ... see, it's getting into the 20s and 30s .. and this is MY weather ... I'm like a new person - because my body doesn't regulate the cold ... now, in the summer - I'm a wet noodle and no energy! weird, huh?
hope that it's not a hernia - unless it's really hurting, Deb - glad to hear you'll be having that checked out!!
just got back from grocery shopping .. and picked up a Wilton Gingerbread kit for $2 .. going to practice for this year!! (yep, going to build a gingerbread lighthouse!!) .. now to figure out the scale, etc.
OH, I sent out 3 more quilts today - check out the website!! all is going great making the quilts ..
TwoKidsTwoCats 01-12-2010 04:52 PM
Vonn, I can handle the 20s and 30s... its the 6 degree weather that I can't handle! :p My pipes are safe, but my poor concrete driveway is not. It is layed out in sections of 10 ft x 10 ft... right next to the garage door two of the sections are rising up! they have cracked on the edges near the garage door, but raised up about 3 inches above the garage floor. IF they crack all the way or don't go back into place once the soil dries and stops freezing...we may be looking at a driveway replacement...about $20K.
Kitty 01-13-2010 09:39 AM
Good Morning (I think)! It's still very cold here.......19 degrees is what the thermometer reads outside.
I was sleeping all nice and cozy.....after being up at 5 AM.....when I was awakened by none other than my neighbor using his leaf blower in his backyard!! Are you kidding me????? It's 19 degrees people!!! :eek:
The man is clearly obsessed with even the slightest bit of debris in his yard. We're talking twigs the size of matches and maybe a dead leaf or two. :rolleyes:
He's stopped now but I am wide awake. Guess I'll watch Regis amd Kelly. If it wouldn't wake up my other neighbors (who are considerate) I'd get a leaf blower myself and use it at 1 AM when I'm up and he's asleep!! :cool:
FinLady 01-13-2010 09:42 AM
Morning all :) Trying to wake up for the day. Not feeling too well, including brain fog, but hoping that changes once the coffee takes effect. :D
Take care everyone! :grouphug::grouphug:
SandyC 01-13-2010 10:15 AM
Morning all! Kitty, how old is your neighbor? LOL
I woke up with a sore throat today. Mom had one last week. Yeah for me!
Jenn, sorry your not feeling well. :hug:
Have a good day everyone. :hug:
I'm not sure but he looks to be in his 40's or 50's. I think he works from home because he's there all the time during the day. That or he just irritated his employer to death so they let him go or arranged for him to work from home! :p
barb02 01-13-2010 11:20 AM
Good morning! I am in my office between classes. Sun is out and the temp is supposed to be in the high 20s today; it's a heat wave. Still hoping for a break from this spasticity.
Jenn and Sandy --- :grouphug:
Kelly, I would try to think of some type of revenge. But that is just the way I am.
Vonn07 01-13-2010 11:31 AM
Pam - sorry to hear about your concrete ... I'm not sure why it is rising so much .. we get cold here .. and sometimes, driveways do that - but not that much ..
:Dancing-Chilli: it's going to get into the 30s today .. and tomorrow and for about a week!! Tomorrow is going to be GREAT traveling and visiting and getting the doc in (PCP follow-up re: liver stuff) ... and stopping by my cousin that I haven't seen for over 10 years - she sent me a Christmas card that she's been trying to find me and it's not right that we are apart ...
it was life - she's married, both have jobs, has 3 grown children (2 are married), a mother and MIL .. a home out in the country .. and 6 months younger than me ... her dad and my mom were brother & sister ... our lives just took different paths .. I never married or settled down ...and now dealing with MS (she didn't know this until last saturday) ..
she keeps emailing me saying she can't wait to see me ... and now we are FB friends too ..
have a great day ...
TwoKidsTwoCats 01-13-2010 12:41 PM
I'm lazy, just getting moving and it's 1130am already! :D
Not much on my plate today. I need to tackle laundry, pay some bills, then go dig through the freezer for something to fix for lunch.
Vonn, we have this lovely(:rolleyes:) red clay soil here in the south that soaks up rain like a sponge. We had a good bit of rain this fall so it was heavily saturated before the freezing temps in Nov and Dec started. For several weeks now our temperatures have not gone above freezing, so the ground is frozen. As the top layer of the clay soil freezes it expands. To top it off, our driveway was not done properly... it should be about 4 - 6 inches thick with steel rods placed in the mix to reinforce it. Ours is only a 2 inch shell of a thing. Did not notice that when we bought. Figures the builder cut so many corners in his houses...unfortunately AL is a buyer beware state. Don't get me started on the good 'ol boys in the inspection business.:mad:
:grouphug: to all
barb02 01-13-2010 12:53 PM
Made the mistake of standing and walking around during my entire class. Last semester, I usually just sat during my classes. But this is a 41 person class so I wanted to stand. OUCH!:eek: Will be walking like Frankenstein out to my car.:rolleyes: I guess I am just going to have to explain to this class why I cannot stand throughout the entire class. I never know what to say.
soxmom 01-13-2010 01:15 PM
sandy, fin, barb.....feel better:hug:
Im off to girl scouts...really struggling with my hip/back...they upped the
excercises at pt yesterday and I am hurting! I hope to do nothing during
the meeting unless they really need me. there are three other leaders
for just this reason.:o:)
Tomorrow I am voluteering in my sons class for three hours and I also
need to make their "hat cake" because friday is hat day! I hate to
cancel out on them...I really love the kids in his class.:) I guess I will
just pay on the weekend.
Kel, debd, vonn, weav, holly, wiz, pam, moo, tricia have a great day!
hugs to everyone!:grouphug:
Today I am straightening up the house. I am expecting a delivery today and can't go anywhere. If it comes early this morning, then I am free. :D
Have a great day everyone!:hug:
FinLady 01-14-2010 09:48 AM
Morning all :) The sun is making an appearence which is great! Started painting again, which is also good. :)
Now to keep pumping the caffine in hopes of waking up. Take care everyone! :grouphug::grouphug:
soxmom 01-14-2010 09:49 AM
good morning everyone.
I have to get off my bottom and start my day.:(
Gotta get cakes in the oven then off to school for fun.:) I just have
no get up and go!:(
I hope you all have an amazing day!:grouphug:
Kitty 01-14-2010 10:02 AM
Well, Sox, my "get up and go" left before I even got out of the bed this morning! :rolleyes: Didn't even say goodbye, either! :mad:
It's a beautiful day here.....going to be in the low 50's they say. Right now it's in the 20's but even that feels better than the single digit temps we've been having every morning.
I had bad dreams last night but I think it's because the last thing I watched on TV was about the people in Haiti. It just breaks my heart that this has happened to them. Wish I could make some sense out of it all. The local news had a Haitian man on the phone who has relatives still in Haiti and he has no way of confirming if they are okay. He was crying and it just really upset me. I cannot imagine what he must be going through. And there isn't anything I can do to help. Just a helpless feeling.
I've been doing very good in my attempt to save money. This entire week I haven't spent any money other than paying a few bills. Nothing extra or unexpected. But, it's pretty easy to do that when you never leave the house! :rolleyes: I'm keeping track of everything on my spreadsheet and it really helps. Makes you think twice before spending anything. I've even got DS thinking the way I do. He's become quite the tightwad!
Time for Let's Make A Deal......I just love Wayne Brady. He's so funny. Ya'll have a good Thursday! :grouphug:
barb02 01-14-2010 10:27 AM
Good morning! I am in my office and all ready for my 11:00 class. I really do not need to get here at 8:00 everyday, but yet I do it. On the other hand, I try to get most of my work done in the mornings, so I can go home in the afternoon. I know I would never be able to handle a job where I had to be present from eight to five. On the other hand, I usually spend most Sundays grading.
Kelly, I had a tough time not watching the news continuously last night. the crisis in Haiti does put certain things into perspective, doesn't it?
The financial news here in Illinois continues to be grim. And the state is not willing to make any hard choices until after the elections next fall. So the millions of dollars in unpaid bills continue to accumulate with interest. It looks like we will make it through the rest of this academic year, but layoffs and furloughs will most likely happen starting this summer. Other universities that are not unionized are already implementing furloughs. I am sure increased tuition and fees will be next, and we already have students dropping out due to the economy. Bleah!
SandyC 01-14-2010 10:59 AM
Morning all! I did not sleep well last night. I think it was the Starbucks coffee Chris gave me at 6pm. haha Mom's chair is supposed to come today. I hope both boxes come at the same time so we can set up her room. Her laptop is due to be delivered tomorrow.
Jim's appointment was canceled today. The sales guy is sick so we rescheduled for next Tuesday. It's probably best since Jim's legs are so tight.
Barb, I heard that some doctors and hospitals may start or have started asking for cash upfront from state employees because they haven't been paid from past care. I pray that doesn't happen to you or anyone else. I didn't even bother watching Quinn online. My patience has worn thin. :rolleyes:
Everyone have a good day and warm. We know Trish is in her 70's in Arizona. haha :hug:
Kitty 01-14-2010 10:59 AM
Barb, the economic news isn't any better here in GA. The unemployment rate just keeps getting higher and higher.
People who lived based on a salary of $50,000 cannot keep up on a job making $8.50 an hour. The news tries to present the "bright side" but you just cannot replace a job that you've worked your way up in to a decent salary with one that pays minimum wage.
The bankruptcy filing rate has skyrocketed here. :( Seems like it should be better by now but the news just seems to keep going downhill. One of the sales people that used to work where I did got laid off last year and still hasn't found a job. He's just waiting for his car to get repossessed now.......he has no income. Unemployment doesn't even cover his rent. It's better than nothing but it's far from adequate.
I hope things improve for you. I know you're so close to being able to retire. :hug:
barb02 01-14-2010 11:44 AM
Sandy, I have heard that about doctors and hospitals too, but so far, we have not experienced that problem down here. State has now paid bills through last April. I switched back to my HMO in July, and it seems to be less stressed financially. I do not know who to vote for in the primary.
SandyC 01-14-2010 12:08 PM
We're thinking Hines but we need more research into him.
Debbie D 01-14-2010 03:18 PM
Good afternoon, everyone...drip, drip, drip goes the melting snow...wish it meant the end of winter, but we all know better, don't we?;)
Went to my pcp yesterday...she's keeping me on my regiment of cholesterol meds, since my numbers actually went down from last Sept.
She and I discussed my in laws, since she's their pcp, too. She said my MIL's neuro sent her a letter stating that my MIL is declining more and more. I asked her, "what kind of dementia does she have?" She paused, and said, "Alzheimer's."
That's the first time a doc has put it into words. I was in shock...even though I've watched and notated the decline, hearing that word sent shivers down my spine. My poor in laws:(:(
I had her check the lump in my abdomen...she sent me for an immediate CT scan. I had to drink 24 oz. of barium...ugh. I was sicker than a dog the rest of the evening.
Anyway, no cancer or hernias, no diverticulitis...she's not sure what it is. Okay, as long as it's not C. That's all I care about. My mom's grandma died of ovarian cancer. No thank you:o
I am going to write an article calling for a tax revolt in Illinois. Money is the only language that our "lawmakers" understand...when they aren't gettin' any, maybe they'll listen to the citizens. Maybe...
Well, all of you have a wonderful afternoon...:)
