My dad just got his brand new computer (iMac) from his work. He gets this "educational" allowance every year, to be used on whatever he wants, like going to educational seminars, or for getting a new 'puter.
So, he just got a nice big iMac. So, once he gets all of his stuff transferred from the old 'puter to the new one, I'll be getting his old macintosh. (which he bought a few years ago with his own cash, not with his educational money) Now I'll be able to hook my old computer (a crappy Gateway) up to my tv and use it like a Tivo. (my Tivo is dying right now as we speak) I just need to clean my desk off, and clean out my yarn cabinet, which used to be a computer cabinet, to put my old computer into. I'm excited! I'm not a big fan of Mac's, but I'm willing to learn how to work it, since I think having to learn new things keeps my brains working, and I'm all for keeping my brain working well. Plus, my Gateway is almost four years old, and I've noticed that most Windows based computers dont last much longer than 3 or 4 years...I'm getting the Mac just in time. I better start clearing off both my desks, it's going to take me a week or two to get them clean at the rate I move when cleaning. Not sure where I'm going to put my crochet/knitting projects, and all the junk that I've accumulated. I guess I'll be donating a bunch of yarn to charity.

Oh good you can join the Mac club. There's a few MACers around here who make fun of us fools, with our PCs..
I didn't know you could use your PC as a Tivo?

Well, it's not a real Tivo, but it's a Media Center computer. It's got the capability to record television on it just like a Tivo.
I have two real Tivo's. They're both DVD recorders too, and they dont manufacture that type of Tivo anymore. The Tivo I have in my room is starting to die. (they're not well known for a long life...the hard drives crash very easily) So, if my Tivo crashes, I'll try recording my tv shows on the computer while I have the Tivo rebuilt by my boyfriend with a new hard drive. I love having a Tivo...right now I'm watching a show about Theodore Roosevelt, it's something like 4 or 5 episodes long, so I set the Tivo to record all the episodes for me so that I'll be able to watch the others later. (and probably burn the episodes to DVD) I love reading and watching shows about Teddy Roosevelt.

You're lucky. I hope to get a laptop someday. And want a mac, just for the learning curve/challenge. Besides, I've heard once you go mac, you never go back. I'll happily be your yarn charity recipient. 's

And, if you're a really dedicated crocheter/knitter, you never want to give up any of your stash...You might NEED it! I've never given away yarn before. Not sure that I can do it. I've been an anti-Mac person for awhile. When my computers started act weird the past few months (I have a 7yr old laptop, a 2yr laptop, and 3yr old desktop) I started to get very annoyed with Windows based computers. I told my dad that when he got his new iMac, that I'd be willing to take his old one to see if I could handle using a Mac. If not, my mom gets it. This is kind of like when I learned to knit. I'd been a crocheter for 30yrs and never really wanted to learn to knit. I learned to knit by accident...the MS made itself known, and I'd learned basic knitting 2days before but wasnt planning on sticking with it. I was so stressed out by the optic neuritis, and the stress of getting diagnosed, that I needed something to keep my mind off of things. So, I kept up with the knitting. Now that I can crochet AND knit, I kind of like trying new things. So, I'm going to try the Mac. Cant be too much different than learning to like knitting. Plus, if I dont like it, either my mom, or my sister will get it. (my sister is a serious Mac user. She's used Macs since the early 80s when both Windows and Apple were developing computers. Her first computer was an Apple 2/E or was that a Apple 2/C?? something like that)

It'll be awhile before my dad hands it over. He's got to get all of his stuff off of it first. He wasnt expecting his work to get the computer so fast. (last time he got a computer from work, it took several months, and they screwed up the order and he didnt get what he'd asked for)
I need to go out and buy a decent keyboard and a new mouse. I hate the Mac mouse and keyboard. I'm sitting here right now, looking at my desks, trying to decide which one I want to put the Mac in, and trying to get the energy to clean both desks. I woke up dizzy this morning, so I doubt I'm going to be doing any desk cleaning for a bit.

I gave away a trash bag full of yarn when I left Denver last year. I freecycled it and it went to a new crocheter who wanted to make afghans for a charity. She was so excited, it made the experience of letting go a bit easier. Good luck learning the Mac. Sounds like you've got a lot of family to help you out. Enjoy the ride. 's

So, now I've got all this crap on the floor that needs to be put away somewhere. I raised the shelf above the desk so that I have enough clearance for the monitor. I'm putting the Mac in this cabinet. I cant raise the shelf in the other desk, and it wont hold the Mac monitor in it because of that. I just hope I have enough power outlets for everything. I think I might be overloading the outlets with my other computer and tv. I end up having to rearrange my bedroom. At least I have something to do now, and I'm not just sitting here, whining about the MS.
