I feel your pain.

When the depression is bad, it is hard to find any energy to do anything. I think a slow walk outdoors might help.

I have found when I push myself to get dressed and go for a quick walk in the morning, it really does help elevate my mood all day long. It is about the only thing that I can rely on.

The Japanese have a term "shinrin-yoku" forest bathing (a short blog post explains this http://wellnessiis.wordpress.com/201...forestbathing/) in which just being in nature (the sounds, smells and sites) is meant to have restorative benefits.

Be well and kind to yourself!

I agree - a walk in the forest, by a river or on the coast is very helpful for mood. Exercise in general naturally lifts seretonin levels also.

Default Hi Brain

Any day that it is sunny outside, it is good for the depression. If your state has some warmer days, take a book outside and soak up that sunshine. The walking is also really good. I take a walk daily, and get in the sunshine. This has helped my depression. I am thinking about you, and praying for you. ginnie

Heart Fighting depression

Got out of the house today and got a little exercise. It did make me feel so much better just to be in the "normal" world again around people. I have been too long without human contact. The exercise helped. I feel like I will sleep really good tonight. The idea of starting a hobby was a great one too. I am excited to make my little art planting world projects. I am a very good painter and used to make Lladros for my mom. These are really expensive porcelain pieces. She always used to love looking at them in the expensive stores so I made her a whole glass cabinet full of them. Nobody believes it when she tells them that I made them. I think I am going to start painting again. Even though it hurts my back. It hurts anyway so might as well do something that can get my mind off of it. I am going to look into the yoga. There is a senior center that my mom and dad go to that I found out has classes. Disabled people can go too. I am going to give everything you guys mentioned a try. I do not like being depressed at all. I will fight. If anyone else has any other ideas be sure to share them. So far you guys have helped a lot! Thank you friends.
Love,
Brain

Heart Great ideas

Thanks guys. I just saw your new ideas. I love the idea of "forest bathing". Loved the video. thank you. We do have beautiful mountains here where I live. Gorgeous canyons all around me. The snow is almost melted enough for me to get up there and do some forest walking and bathing and soaking in the sun, smells, sounds and beauty. That will indeed help. I will go ASAP. That is one positive thing is that I am now well enough to go and walk around in the canyons and outside some now. Before I was in too much pain. Could not even ride in the car. So things are getting better slowly. I have to keep that in my mind. Not the bad things.
Thanks for checking in on me Ginny. lots of love to you all.
Thanks again for all your support and caring for me. You guys are much appreciated.

Default Great suggestions

Most everything has been said, but I wanted to add that I find music to be uplifting. I like reggae as an anti-depressant! If you can dance, even if just gently and slowly, that's great too!

Anyway, hugs to you! I know what depression is like. Get out of your house and try to enjoy the little things!

I have recovered my cognitive function, and I've overcome severe vertigo through sensory integration therapy. Wellbutrin has helped me escape depression. I have recently had a few stress-related migraines, as well as headaches stemming from eye strain. I'm also dealing with tinnitus, lack of stamina, extreme light sensitivity, and eye pain. Diagnosed with 9 different vision issues: convergence insufficiency, pursuit eye movement deficit, egocentric visual midline shift, photophobia, visual information processing delays, accommodative insufficiency, saccadic eye movement deficit, lack of coordination, and central peripheral visual integration deficit.

*First concussion: October 2010. I was pregnant and got rear ended. I associated my mild PCS symptoms with baby brain and blamed my light sensitivity on allergies and dry eyes.
*Second concussion: December 2011. I hit my head on a wooden beam, saw stars but did not lose consciousness, and I had very disturbing PCS symptoms but didn't go to the doctor.
*Third concussion: August 2012. I caused a car accident as a result of PCS symptoms. Thankfully no one was injured but me. My husband confronted me, and I finally sought help and took medical leave from work. My symptoms worsened, and I developed severe vertigo.
*Fourth concussion: November 2012. I was riding in a car with a friend and we were hit head on by a driver who lost control of her car. I didn't have a big increase in PCS symptoms.

Default awsome brain

Go girl! Love what you do with the scupture and art. Pain or no, this is good for your mental state!!!! Depression lifts when we engage in the arts. Would love to see some of your work. Working with pain takes some effort, I know it does, but I think it is worth it, to have that creativity going. With all that you are trying to do, I admire your effort on all fronts..... You are quite a woman! ginnie

Most has been said already but wanted to repeat the idea of music. Not sure how you feel about it but I really like uplifting gospel music myself. Just an idea. I sort of feel like it's the best music to get me "out of myself" and focused on bigger things, happier things. I need to remember this for myself!

I've been diving deep into depression also so thanks for starting the thread. I've not been prescribed any anti depressants because up to now I've been diagnosed with adjustment disorder only (meaning not major depression but just difficulty adjusting to the new normal) for which there was nothing prescribed. I'm ok with that because it would just be another thing for WCB to blame for my symptoms instead of the injury.

Still it's very hard to cope with depression without meds, so I feel for you, and commend your willingness to try new things. you are so strong.

About it: October 26, 2012 I fell backward on an icy parking lot at work. I was on Workers Comp for 9 months. My PCS : everyday headaches became once in a while headaches, and neck pain became manageable. Still have occasional mild dizziness, sometimes fullness in the ears, convergence insufficiency, sequencing struggles, short term memory struggles, verbal processing delays. CT neg, MRI neg. Therapies: prism glasses, acupuncture, icing neck, resting, supplementing, Elavil 20mg at bedtime.

NEW: Completed 12 weeks of physical therapy and returned to work full time.

About me: I'm a marketing manager, a mom with a blended family and wife to a heart attack survivor. I believe my brain injury taught me more than it cost me. I'm grateful to still be me!
