Pocono's really hit with wind damage, the power is still off, gas shortage. My dgs finally got back to school and had his Holloween party today. The trees down, are huge monsters. I guess because they had leaves on, the rain, the 70 mph winds has been wicked.
The photo's of the shore, there are no words for. I am glad to hear the NY marathon is postponed. The city needs the commerce but in reality, things are not ready for their own, let alone the influx.

On top of it, there is a Nor'Easter headed up the coast. Last thing we want to see is heavy snow. Gee, you would think that over all the years the elec wires could be put under drowns, not on sticks/poles!
Keep warm everyone, some sleet tonight, I need to feel the sun and some warmth.

bizi 11-02-2012 05:56 PM

stay warm di, do you have a generator?

Hi, Di,

No power and limited access to gas stinks. Now, sleet!!!
I would send some sunshine your way.
Keep staying safe.

We DownHere have just gotten the coldfront rain finally this evening; no big deal. It's actually a bit welcomed to feel a little chill in the air, hear a little rumble of thunder & only some mild lightning seen over the Bay tonight. Hope that ya all are warm & cozy tonight. My lifelong friend in NJ still had no elec power Monday. :(

bizi 11-06-2012 12:03 AM

I feel sorry for the people in the east coast....there lives are so disrupted. and this other weather front coming....sigh

Brokenfriend 11-07-2012 11:37 PM

There's been a weather pattern in the last several years. It seems like when we have two storms in the area,we have a third.

We may have a third storm in the mid,to Northern Atlantic at the end of this week,or next week. I hope that I'm wrong, and I hope that the weather pattern has changed.

I feel sorry for the people who are getting the snow storm on top of last weeks tropical storm. This storm last week went all around us,and I didn't have any problems. BF:hug::hug::hug:

Brokenfriend 11-08-2012 01:40 AM

I did some research on the weather forward cast for the winter. We may not get that storm next week because the El Nino as of November 6,2012 is weak,to neutral.

So there may not be a storm in the Northeast coastal area next week. BF:hug::hug::hug:

Theta Z 11-08-2012 06:50 AM

Good morning, Steve, et al UpThere in the East/Northeast,

Glad to see that Storm Athena is moving out & away today.
Thanks for bringing my attention to this one-two-three punch weather pattern, Steve. Indeed hopefully there will be no third NE Coastal storm next week walloping the area and resources already under stress.

I recall 2005, my first experience of living with/through tropical storm season DownHere. 2005 brought to us "The Three Sisters": Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma --- all category 5 storms. What an impact on resources and people's coping skills.

bizi 11-08-2012 09:35 AM

theta, I forgot that they were all cat 5!!!!!!
scarey, katrina was so big.

Indiana has honestly been very luck with this stuff the coast have gotten
and I for one really appreciate it.

We get the mess when it comes to snow, ice and the other things that
can come.

But that is normal for us.

Here comes a winter storm that the weather channel is calling Brutus. If it makes it to the East Coast,it may be the third storm scenario to hit us. BF:hug::hug::hug:

Brokenfriend 11-11-2012 11:27 PM

You can see Brutus on the "Noaa mosaic national radar". I saw the others on the "Intellicast-Atlantic satellite in the U.S." BF:hug::hug::hug:

The Great Lakes may energize this storm so that it makes it to the Northeast. I hope not. Some people are still with out power from Superstorm Sandy.

In"Astronomy Picture of the day Archive",there is a place that shows the trek of the Storm Sandy. It's 6 posts down. It's 2012-Nov-07. It's a fascinating youtube style view of where the storm went. BF:hug::hug::hug:

DiMarie 11-12-2012 02:05 AM

Gosh where Sandy went, I think it sat over the PA and NY area about 4 days. Before and after, nothing but cloudy skies, even blustery days. I felt so bad for those without power or homes.....feels like its going to be long Winter!
Hang in there, looks like we're in for a bumpy ride!

Dmom3005 11-12-2012 01:17 PM

Wow, We had our first snow last night, early this morning.

I was not and am still not ready for this.

Total Solar Eclipse Tues

Hi,

There is a total solar eclipse Tuesday:

http://www.space.com/18435-total-sol...ch-online.html

Quote:

Several different organizations will provide live webcasts of the total solar eclipse, which begins at 3:35 p.m. EST (2035 GMT) on Tuesday (Nov. 13; however, it will actually be Nov. 14 local time in Australia).
It can be seen in Australia.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1...n_2116567.html
Quote:

Solar eclipses are of interest not only to skywatchers but also to scientists, who use eclipses to gather astronomical data. Eclipses can be especially good opportunities for obtaining information on the solar corona, the sun's superheated outer layer.

"We get to study the motions and dynamics of the solar corona, the variations in temperature, the effect of the solar magnetic field on the corona, and other aspects that can only be done from the ground during an eclipse—not from a spacecraft," Pasachoff told NatGeo.

A Low pressure system is about to become active here where I am. The noaa radars are showing rain in the next county over to the West of me. We need the rain anyway,so let it rain.

At night it's suppose to go below freezing for at least 4 nights starting Friday night. That's normal for this time of the year.

Don't worry. The world will not end on the 21st of December. The Mayans where wrong, and people made money over this. BF:hug::hug::hug:

I went to my hairdresser's tonight and guess what they were talking about? This whole Mayan calendar thing. After there I went to Family Dollar and two customers were talking to each other saying you going party tonight? Then when I checked out the cashier said "you going party tonight?" I said no, my partying days are over. He said "you not? well when I get off work I'm going Mayan party". Now my cousin on facebook is talking about some guy he saw on a pretty major road here walking along the side of the road dressed as a zombie. This is getting weird. For the first time I'm feeling a smidge of tension over this. They said at the hairdresser's that it's supposed to happen at 10 pm tomorrow. I know nothing's going to happen, but I'll be glad at 10:01pm tomorrow when this is all over.

Hi,

NASA has a page dedicated to explaining people's concerns.

http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html

Quote:

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.
The Winter Solstice is on Friday 6:12 a.m. (EST)
It is the first day of winter and the shortest day of the year in some places. The days will start getting longer as we head towards spring.

Well, since 6:12am has passed I'm sure we're good to go.

THANK YOU MARI! I just watched the video. I am a visual person, this video makes sense to me, especially the part about the car odometer. I should have thought to google for something like this. I had to take 2 Xanax last night, I usually just take 1. I'm so mad at myself for losing sleep over this. So dumb.

They can be fun to experience as. Long as no power loss. Going to have more real cold weather. In a few days. Single digit again. Really bad when 20's. is considered not bad. Although we never did have a good freeze for ice fishing and only plow able snow was around Christmas Eve and yesterday.

I am ready for warmth. Winter is too long up here.
Be safe Steve.

cold and Tiger Mosquitoes

DiMarie, i'd gladly take a week of subfreezing temps from ya, just so it would kill off all the mosquitoes. No, it's not like there are a lot, but the fact is it used to be cold enough here during winter, to exterminate them. Without this seasonal kill-off, we are going to be inundated when spring comes.

Part of the problem is that for several years now we have had a growing population of a type of the Tiger Mosquito. It is bigger, feistier, and "hunts" day and night (as opposed to dusk onwards). This mosquito is also more resistant to adverse conditions including cold, so we really need a good deepfreeze that will kill it and kill any larvae...

At the same time, our overall warmer temps year-round perhaps explain how this mosquito was able to spread here - it originates in warmer regions of Asia. :(

Dern BUGS! ugh! :hissyfit:

Oh! and the stings from this one are worse than from "regular" skeeters - they itch to the point of pain, scarcely respond to regular treatment (even cortisone!) and take 7-10 days to remit considerably. Some people, when they receive new stings, also experience a re-inflammation of older/existing stings. This thing has crrrrazy venom!!!

mosquitoes?!

Waves,

Do they stay outside or do you have them inside as well?

Here's hoping you get a deep freeze soon.

M

DiMarie 01-19-2013 01:11 AM

Funny you mention that Waves. We have had a substantial mild two winters. This few days a polar drift. Comes down is not enough to kill abundance of bugs either. I don't suspect we have the Tiger misquito but it is resisting the cold. Dd and I had two bites last weekend, and right before Christmas it was 60* and that weird lady bugs came out.
Maybe before Sprong we may luck out with a ground freeze and it will help kill the bugs.

Dear Mari, why of course! They are such highly evolved beings they are able to communicate with us telepathically. When we open a door we mentally broadcast a polite request that any mosquito remain outside the threshold, and they most graciously comply...
YEARRRRIGHT! :rolleyes::D

Ok, so the real deal is, we have screens, so it's not like every time we open a window they come in. but we keep stuff on our mini-terrace, and have to go in and out daily. so sometimes something flies in. my mom got bitten, and she later killed it... inside.

i saw one in the subway the other day. I had to flap it away from me a couple of times. But it's the ones you don't see that gitcha, i'n'it?

Arghhh! :( ... it really is GLOBAL warming!! Or El Niño or something. Well i hope for you and me both, that we get that freeze! here we haven't even dropped below freezing point but a couple of times... it's pretty wild. only snowed a couple times too, but snowpoint is about 33-35* usually.
